  1. Everton's business done?published at 19:55 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

Barring anything late that may come up, which is highly unlikely at this stage, Everton's incomings for this transfer window looks to be done.

The Toffees, bottom of the table, signed Ashley Young, Arnaut Danjuma, Jack Harrison, Youssef Chermiti and Beto this summer.

  2. Why do Spurs want Brennan Johnson?published at 19:51 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

Ten miles across London,Chelsea have signed a promising but unproven 21-year-old in Cole Palmer for a fee in excess of £40m.

Almost exactly 12 months his senior, Brennan Johnson is costing Spurs about £5m extra from Nottingham Forest - and Ange Postecoglou can be very confident in what he is getting.

Johnson tore up the Championship for Forest in their successful 2021-22 season, scoring 16 goals and making a further nine as Steve Cooper's side made a barely believable charge from the bottom of the table to play-off final success.

An vibrant presence on the wing, he almost switched to Brentford that January but stayed, and was rewarded with a chance at the Premier League six months later.

His rise continued inexorably last season, a bright spark of consistency in an overhauled Forest side that initially struggled to adapt to the demands of top-flight football.

At 21, Johnson was unfazed, regularly carrying the torch for Cooper's side and proving a constant thorn in opposition defences.

With leading striker Taiwo Awoniyi out injured, Johnson was Forest's main central threat, scoring vital goals against Leicester, Wolves and Everton to keep the club afloat.

When Awoniyi returned, he moved into more of a support role, helping the number nine to six goals in his final four games.

His fluidity will be essential in Postecoglou's high-octane system and will allow him to dovetail neatly with James Maddison, Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski.

He will not be expected to score all the goals - but it is not hard to imagine him dramatically increasing his end product with the higher quality of play around him.

That's because of his potential. He already has 19 international caps under his belt, including World Cup experience, and is regarded as one of the most talented British prospects in the Premier League.

Cooper would have loved to keep him at the City Ground but, ultimately, finance dictates his departure.

At Spurs, a club with a history of moulding and supporting young talent, his ceiling is possibly limitless.

Unlike Palmer at Chelsea, Johnson's path to stardom at Spurs is mapped out.

It will be intriguing to see how it unfolds.

Aston Villa's window has been strong! Speaking to a Spurs fans, Lenglet will be fine enough as cover for a European season, but Konsa, Torres & Carlos will be the first three options. Would have been interested in Dier or Maguire on loan, given their experience but, really can't complain too much for the first time in a few years

Inter Milan have signed Ajax and Netherlands midfielder Davy Klaassen, 30, on a permanent deal.

He previously played for Ajax (the first time), Everton and Werder Bremen.

Inter's very colourful statement tells us: "Hilversum, February 21 1993: the baby was born with a shock of white hair, easily recognizable among all the newborns in the hospital."

There has been a lot of talk about Donny van de Beek but it does look as though he will end tonight still as a Manchester United player.

Galatasaray have been linked with Van de Beek and given Turkey's deadline remains open into the middle of September, that could offer an option for the Dutchman.

But, for now, barring an expected development, he is remaining at Old Trafford.

  6. Should Man Utd have acted sooner in transfer market?published at 19:38 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

It's amazing how Manchester United are reacting to the market rather than being proactive and making the signings that they wanted and who would have been the difference for them.

I think the way they have started, you look at the central midfield and full-back areas and think that's an issue. You look at the Maguire situation, they've had a lot of interest in him but then nothing has happened and they don't want to use him, so I find that very strange not using him but no deal to be done.

Wouldn't you have said that their deals would have been done at the start of the season when it's Manchester United? And I think that's the point. They brought Mason Mount in – they've lost him now – but there's a few players they could have brought in sooner.

What can we all learn from transfer deadline day (apart from the feeling that Premier League clubs should all plan their business better)?

With the new school year starting, our colleagues at BBC Bitesize have taken some examples from past deadline days to see what can we learn from them and apply to studying.

They include fails such as Benjani missing his plane (lesson learned: have a buffer) or Odemwingie’s car park disaster (plan ahead). You can read it here.

Why wouldn’t Mbappe want to sign for Liverpool for a couple of years? Test himself in a proper league. It’s not like PSG will win the UCL anyway. Surely winning Europa and becoming a Liverpool legend would be attractive before he jets off to Madrid!

  14. 'One of the most surreal days'published at 19:07 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

Scott McCarthy, We Are Brighton, external

The youngest-ever scorer for Barcelona and the Spanish national team, the heir to Lionel Messi, a player with a €1bn release clause, is coming to the Amex for one year.

Needless to say, the Albion will probably not be paying a billion euros to turn the deal permanent at the end of the season. But this still has the feeling of a game-changing signing in terms of the money Brighton are willing to pay for a player.

The rumour mill suggests the Albion are covering up to 80 percent of Fati's wages, with most estimates putting that figure at £160,000 at the very least. That totally smashes the club's existing pay structure.

It is a sign that Brighton are increasingly confident of their place in the top 10 and willing to start throwing around similar money to their contemporaries in that area of the table, rather than being plucky gatecrashers punching above their weight.

Fati is also the sort of signing a manager like Roberto de Zerbi deserves. It is testament to De Zerbi, not only that Barcelona were happy for one of their biggest young stars to come to Sussex to rebuild his career, but that Fati apparently chose Brighton over Spurs following just one conversation with the Albion head coach.

It is a far cry from transfer deadline day 10 years ago, when the big-name signing was Dean Hammond returning on loan from Southampton. No offence, Dean.

So 1 September 2023 will go down as one of the most surreal days in the history of the Albion. Little old Brighton signing the best players from Barca’s academy on the same day the Europa League draw gives us matches against former European champions Ajax and Marseille, along with a trip to AEK Athens.

  17. 'I feel the responsibility to help this talent'published at 19:00 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

Roberto De ZerbiImage source, Getty Images

Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi feels Barcelona loanee Ansu Fati is a "big player" but that he "can't make mistakes" as he tries to develop the 20-year-old forward during his time on the south coast.

Spain international Fati has joined the Seagulls on a deal until the end of the season, having been linked with Premier League rivals Tottenham.

"I'm very pleased, it's a big player," the Italian said of the new arrival. "We lost Enciso and we needed one big player.

"We are lucky because we have a lot of young players, potential top players and it will be one responsibility more.

"If you work with this talent, you have much responsibility because it's our football heritage and we can't make mistakes with these players because football needs this talent and you have to manage it in different ways.

"I've always thought like this. Especially for the big, big talent, I feel the responsibility to help this talent to become great players.

"Sometimes the coaches think only of the result, only of their career but football needs to have great players. It's a big responsibility and I feel it.

"I think our style is very close with his characteristics, with his qualities."
