What next for Gareth Southgate and his team?

England host Australia in another friendly on 13 October, four days before Italy visit Wembley.

Italy are likely to be three points behind in Group C by then since they have Malta at home before flying out to London.

  3. 'Excellent in all phases of the game'published at 22:32 British Summer Time 12 September 2023

    FT: Scotland 1-3 England

England manager Gareth Southgate on Channel 4: "Really pleased. I thought we were excellent in all phases of the game right from the start.

"We wanted to control the game by using the ball well and I thought we did that well. Today the players one to 11, and the subs, it was one of those days when they all did well.

"At the weekend Ukraine sat really deep and we found it hard to create chances but today we had runners through."

On Jude Bellingham: "He doesn't have a point to prove to us, we know he is a really good player. Saturday was not his best game but we weren't at the level we wanted to be and we knew he has a fantastic personality to come back from that.

"His performances have been outstanding and one performance isn't going to change that. As an attacking eight, or where he played tonight, he looks to get into the box. Tonight his athleticism to press was so important. Scotland's system is difficult to play against so we slightly changed our system and he did that well."

On Phil Foden: "I'm pleased for him. I've had a lot of questions about him [from the media]. He scored a goal and I thought his performance was really good. He did a really good job for us without the ball too and that's often overlooked. To press well and counter-press was exceptional."

  4. 'A wake-up call for Scotland'published at 22:26 British Summer Time 12 September 2023

    FT: Scotland 1-3 England

    Willie Miller
Former Scotland defender on BBC Sportsound

We don't come up against top opposition like England very often. Perhaps we did get a little bit carried away with that home game against Spain. It's a wake up call.

We had no answers in the first half and were basically spectators watching them.

  5. 'Clarke will learn lessons'published at 22:22 British Summer Time 12 September 2023

    FT: Scotland 1-3 England

    Craig Levein
Former Scotland manager on BBC Sportsound

There's enough in that game tonight for Steve Clarke to pull some things out of it to show his players where we'll playing well, but, where we need to raise our levels even further to compete against this type of opposition.

You need to talk about things when they go wrong as much as you do when they go right. Steve is really good at that.

This has been a reasonable exercise.

  6. 'We've always come back stronger from adversity'published at 22:18 British Summer Time 12 September 2023

    FT: Scotland 1-3 England

Scotland manager Steve Clarke on Channel 4: "First half, we didn't really get started, couldn't get hold of the ball.

"Second half, we showed a better intensity, and when it goes 2-1 we had the chance to be in the game, but England scored another one and it was always going to be difficult to get back in.

"England started like the top side they are. We're not there, but we're trying to develop, trying to get better. We've always come back stronger from adversity, and let's hope that's the case [here].

"Andy [Robertson] made a mistake for the second goal, that happens in football. We're capable of scoring goals against top teams, and hopefully we take that to Spain next month.

"When you play against a side as good as England, you have to get everything 100% correct. We didn't do that tonight, and that's why we lost the game.

"The camp's been a success, because we've got a perfect record in the qualifying group. We're in a good place."

  7. Bellingham 'an unreal talent' - Fodenpublished at 22:15 British Summer Time 12 September 2023

    FT: Scotland 1-3 England

England forward Phil Foden on team-mate Jude Bellingham: "He's so mature for his age, an unreal talent, a massive talent and important for us with the way we play.

"We need Jude a lot and it's a pleasure to play with him and we link-up really well."

  8. 'Let's hope we are talking about Bellingham in five or 10 years' time'published at 22:13 British Summer Time 12 September 2023

    FT: Scotland 1-3 England

    Chris Waddle
Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Players who have come on with unbelievable potential, you say 'he could be anything'. We said it with Dele Alli and Ross Barkley as examples of names of players where we have said 'this could be the new Gazza'.

Yes, Jude Bellingham did well at Dortmund, but Jadon Sancho was on fire at Dortmund. Bellingham has gone to Real Madrid and got five goals in five games. But if he is still pulling the strings at the World Cup in five or 10 years then he will deserve everything he gets.

He's a guy that's playing unbelievable football, but it's still potential. He will have a spell when he loses form, every player does that. It will be how he recovers from that.

He is on fire at the minute, great, a top man, but he could be absolutely unbelievable if he keeps working and learning. Let's hope we're still talking about him in five or 10 years' time.

The players want to give him the ball and I hope he fulfils the potential he has got, because it is enormous.

  10. Bellingham enjoys role with 'freedom'published at 22:08 British Summer Time 12 September 2023

    FT: Scotland 1-3 England

England midfielder Jude Bellingham on Channel 4: "I wasn't happy with how I played against Ukraine, it wasn't anywhere near my best and the motivation is always to get back to your best. I got somewhere close tonight.

"It's just a freedom role really. I get given the freedom by the amazing teammates and manager that I have [at Real Madrid].

"I know it depends on the system we play, and we've got so many amazing players to accommodate, and so the team comes first always. I really enjoyed playing in that [same] position today.

"A lot of the lads felt like they didn't perform to their level [against Ukraine]. That's a great attitude to have, and still be able to take the positives into the next game.

"Having these big wins helps build camaraderie in the group."

  12. 'Beaten by a far better side'published at 21:59 British Summer Time 12 September 2023

    FT: Scotland 1-3 England

    Willie Miller
Former Scotland defender on BBC Sportsound

We didn't get nearly close enough to England in the first half.

The fear was it could get to an embarrassing score, but 3-1 was deserved.

However better that second half was from Scotland, England really took the foot of the gas.

Hands up, we were beaten by a far better side.

  13. 'Scotland were outclassed'published at 21:55 British Summer Time 12 September 2023

    FT: Scotland 1-3 England

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Scotland were underdogs and we knew that. England started well and were sharp. For Scotland to live with the top five or six nations they have to be at their best and have a work rate that is almost super human.

It was easy for England to get in in the first half. Man-for-man Scotland were outclassed and it wouldn't have mattered what tactics they played so it is a tough one to swallow.

Scotland have been amazing down the left and shredded teams, but not got a sniff tonight so well done Kyle Walker.

When the second goal went in there was a moment of 'oh dear this could get ugly'. It was so easy for England to get through. It is a downer, Scotland have had them in the past.

There is another big game to look forward to, Spain to come, but don't play so open or you will get the same result or worse. Scotland will not go to Seville and play like that.

The glory Scotland get from beating England is extraordinary, but the devastation from losing isn't. This could've been memorable for years so Scotland took the chance.

    FT: Scotland 1-3 England

    Graeme Souness
Former Scotland captain on Channel 4

Scotland couldn't get the crowd involved, and didn't show the required aggression, for me.

England dominated the game, and there was always another gear for them.

It was a sobering night for Scotland - there's an enormous gap between the teams right now.

England have to be looking to win a trophy now - this is a special group that Gareth Southgate has.

Georgia did threaten again after pulling one back in Oslo, but Norway hold on for the 2-1 victory.

The Norwegians are now eight points behind Scotland in Group A.

Spain beat Cyprus 6-0 and are now six behind Steve Clarke's men with a game in hand.

Scotland go to Spain next; 12 October in Seville.
