    Scotland v England (19:45)

England's main Group C rivals go head-to-head tonight, with Italy and Ukraine meeting in Milan.

Reigning European champions Italy really need a win with just four points from their first three outings.

    Scotland v England (19:45)

If Norway and Georgia draw tonight, then Scotland will become the first side to qualify for Euro 2024.

Those two shared a 1-1 in Tbilisi in March, but Georgia may be feeling a bit sorry for themselves after a 7-1 pummelling on home soil from Spain on Friday.

The Spanish will be expected to close the gap on Steve Clarke's side as they host Cyprus.

  3. See you at the Eurospublished at 19:13 British Summer Time 12 September 2023

    Scotland v England (19:45)

Having met one another at the last Euros, both teams are in very good shape to reach the finals again in Germany next year.

Scotland sit proudly on top of Group A after five successive wins - a record start to any campaign.

England are at the summit of Group C, although their 100% record came to an end after the weekend's 1-1 draw with Ukraine in Poland.

These are pretty tasty encounters, I know. There will be no quarter given.

This is the best Scottish team we've had in a couple of generations, and I think we can get a result.

If [Scotland] start well tonight, this place will be rocking.

When Steve Clarke came to Scotland, I thought this is a tough job, but, he's gone so above and beyond expectations or hopes.

It's been very, very special. It's about us, and I think our players think that way just now, and Clarkey has underlined that to them - it's what they do.

Just walking around Hampden today, hours before the game, the place, the feeling, it's just different - special.

It's kind of important to them (England), but it's not the same.

What it means to us is absolutely extraordinary. If any player plays in this game and wins it and is Scottish, you will remember that and talk about that for the rest of your life.

  9. Extraordinary Hampden hullabaloopublished at 18:57 British Summer Time 12 September 2023

    Scotland v England (19:45)

The last meeting at Hampden was a bit more like it...

That game, in June 2017, had drama galore - and then some.

England led the World Cup qualifier 1-0 thanks to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, but Leigh Griffiths lit up a sunny afternoon in Glasgow with two stunning free-kicks inside three minutes to send the Tartan Army into raptures.

The second of those strikes flew past Joe Hart on 90 minutes, but there was more to come.

Deep into stoppage-time, home fans were urging Stuart Armstrong to batter the ball up the park - or out of the park. He didn't. The pass was intercepted and - in the blink of an eye - Raheem Sterling crossed for Harry Kane to pop in the equaliser at the back post.

  10. Goalless again at Euro 2020published at 18:54 British Summer Time 12 September 2023

    Scotland v England (19:45)

The most recent meeting was a bit of a bore too; another 0-0 draw at Wembley during the delayed Euro 2020.

John Stones hit the woodwork with a header, while Stephen O'Donnell and Lyndon Dykes had chances for Scotland - and it rained a lot.

Probably the most memorable element was Billy Gilmour's assured first start for Scotland.

Don't worry, it's not often goalless. There have only been four such results in the long history of the fixture.

  11. Not a very promising beginningpublished at 18:52 British Summer Time 12 September 2023

    Scotland v England (19:45)

The first official Scotland v England encounter took place on 30 November 1872 at Hamilton Crescent in the Partick area of Glasgow.

Around 4,000 spectators witnessed a 0-0 draw, a rather inauspicious start to international football.

The site is still home to West of Scotland Cricket Club and if you've spent a decent length of time in the west end of the city, chances are you've been to a birthday party in the clubhouse.

Not sure if the bar was open back in 1872...

Gareth Southgate has said he wouldn't "over experiment" with his team. Despite the number of changes Rashford, Foden, Phillips and Trippier are all very experienced in big games. Marc Guehi, Lewis Dunk and Aaron Ramsdale have just nine international caps between them.

    Scotland v England (19:45)

England boss Gareth Southgate said yesterday it would be "ridiculous" to make too many changes, so it's something of a surprise to see six fresh faces coming in from Saturday's 1-1 draw with Ukraine.

Aaron Ramsdale is in between the sticks and Kieran Trippier wins his 43rd cap, while it's just a second appearance for Lewis Dunk.

Kalvin Phillips, Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden are also in from the start.

You can call it a friendly or a heritage match, at the end of the day, this one matters as much as the best of them to everyone here.

A quick nosey inside the fan zone and the place is bouncing. The sun was even shining in Glasgow, you know something special must be brewing.

Inside the national stadium, the revelry among the support has boiled down to a nervous tension. Hampden is prepped for a some sort of sparkling tifo display, while an unnamed former Scotland international has confidently proclaimed to me that the Scots are winning 2-1.

If it comes off, I'll tell you later who it was.

The oldest international rivalry in world football is renewed this evening as Scotland welcome England to Hampden Park.

This is the 116th official meeting and it marks the 150th anniversary of the first of those.

It's a rare "friendly" but both sides will be fired up for sure, roared on by a full house in Glasgow in just over an hour.
