Ange Postecoglou has made the best start by a Premier League manager after 10 games in charge.

He is looking to become only the third manager to avoid defeat in his opening 11 fixtures, emulating Nottingham Forest's Frank Clark in 1994 and Chelsea's Maurizio Sarri in 2018.

Ange Postecoglou says he will not be demanding a squad full of "24 world-class players" yet.

Tonight's opponents Chelsea have spent about £1bn since Todd Boehly's take over in May 2022.

The north London side shopped more conservatively in the summer, but their new recruits have hit the ground running, meaning the new Spurs boss sits near the top of the league after 10 games.

Asked if he would like that amount of money to spend on new signings, Postecoglou said: "Not necessarily. I've always said I've never felt it is about just spending money. That's been proved time and time again.

"If you get it all right then you've got a pretty strong case, but there's always a limit to every team. You can't have 24 world-class players. That will never work. It's been proven that it doesn't work.

"It's about having a squad that's balanced, guys that are committed to a cause. Having guys that maybe aren't going to play every game, but every time they play they are going to make a huge impact for you because they buy into what you are trying to build."

It was one of those strange situations when the manager goes and people believe that he shouldn't have gone but it was quite clear that things didn't work out.

All the money that was going to the stadium and the squad was suffering and as a consequence, cycles finish and we know all that but it would have been nice if Pochettino comes back at some point.

There was that period after Mourinho when the call came in for him to come back and this summer just past there wasn't. It seems like it has passed and it will be like one of those ex-partners that you remember fondly.

Mauricio Pochettino gives funny reaction on returning to 'ex' Spurs

Mauricio Pochettino says he is happy to see Tottenham doing so well under Ange Postecoglou and sees his former club as title contenders.

When asked if Postecoglou's side are genuine title contenders, he said: "Yes. I think so. I think they are doing a fantastic job. Ange and all the coaching staff are doing a fantastic job.

"Of course, very good players, very good team and you can feel they can be a contender. It’s early in the season, but they are showing the qualities to be a contender.

"I don’t know him [Postecoglou] really well, but I am so happy for him and for the club that they are doing really well after four years.

"We cannot forget all that happened there when we were there. It’s normal but we are very positive people. At the same time we are very grateful people and when the club is doing well, we keep these links and always you are happy when the club are doing well."

You have to strip it back. Do football fans think like that and understand that [he took the job as he was out of work]? They don't care because it is Chelsea.

It is unfortunately because of the job he did there and how he developed the club. There will be people there booing him, I am sure of that.

  7. 'Pochettino factor could burst Postecoglou's bubble'published at 19:06 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

I've gone with Tottenham to win this one but, at the back of my mind, I have a nagging doubt about that.

On paper, it's pretty easy to predict how the game will go - Spurs are top of the table and haven't lost under Ange Postecoglou, while Chelsea are so erratic.

Pretty much everything points to a home win, but with Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino going back to Spurs for the first time since they sacked him in 2019, I am not so sure.

I am still going to go with my instinct and back Tottenham, because I think they are a better team than Chelsea are - but the Pochettino factor makes me think that, somehow, his side will find a way to win, and he will be the one who bursts Postecoglou's bubble.

On top of that, Chelsea are the team who I can't ever seem to pick the right result for.

I've actually managed it twice this season - when they beat Luton and drew with Bournemouth - but it feels like I had a better strike rate when I played up front for them.

    Prediction: 2-0

While at some stage many Tottenham fans probably would have welcomed Mauricio Pochettino back with open arms, you feel they are pretty happy with the man they have in the dugout right now.

Ange Postecoglou has had a brilliant start to his managerial career at Spurs and is in contention for a hat-trick of Premier League manager of the month awards after yet another unbeaten month in October.

Despite his excellent start, Postecoglou is well aware of just how much of a positive impact Pochettino has had at Tottenham.

"Everyone I speak to around here, there are still people who worked with him, they can't speak highly enough of him as a person and as a manager," he said.

"I doubt there will be anything but respect for Mauricio from anyone at this football club, supporters or people associated, but it doesn't mean he will get a guard of honour on Monday night because we want to win."

After guiding Southampton to eighth in the Premier League in 2013-14, Mauricio Pochettino was appointed Tottenham manager in May 2014 and was in charge for five and a half years.

He was sacked five months after taking Spurs to that Champions League final appearance, where they lost to Liverpool in Madrid.

"I didn't decide to leave," Pochettino said.

"We parted ways because I was sacked. But it's not a criticism to the club. That is a difference, we didn't decide to leave. Maybe [we could be] still there."

    Good evening!

Tottenham have a big incentive to keep their unbeaten run going because another three points will see them move back to the top of the table.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are languishing down in the bottom half of the standings but a victory would see them climb up to 10th.

After Arsenal were beaten by Newcastle at the weekend there is just one team left unbeaten in the Premier League so far this season - Tottenham.

Tonight they face Chelsea, with Mauricio Pochettino returning to the club he led to the Champions League final back in 2019.

Will Spurs keep their unbeaten run going? Or will their former boss come back to haunt them?
