  1. 'Liverpool won't care who the opposition manager is'published at 19:26 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2023

Sheffield United v Liverpool (19:30 GMT)

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

To be absolutely honest with you, I don't think if you are Liverpool you care much about Chris Wilder returning to Sheffield United.

If you are wanting to go and win league titles, then Bramall Lane is one of the places you have to go to and win. Rain, snow, whatever the weather tonight.

Doesn't matter who the opposition manager is, they will aim to play their normal game tonight and get the win.

A new voice always makes the first game after a change of manager really interesting but don't see it [a new manager] making much difference for the Blades here, because what worries me is how brittle they are at the back.

Liverpool did amazingly well to come back to beat Fulham on Sunday and they are right in the thick of the title race now. This should be a much more straightforward victory for Jurgen Klopp's side, who have got the firepower to win comfortably.

    Sutton's prediction: 0-3

Liverpool's away form isn't always that convincing but I don't see them struggling here.

    Rhys' prediction: 0-3

Fulham v Nottingham Forest (19:30 GMT)

Fulham were unlucky to leave Anfield empty-handed on Sunday after being ahead so late on, and they looked much brighter up front. Maybe they have finally come to terms with Aleksandar Mitrovic's departure, because they have started to score goals again.

It is three defeats in a row now for Nottingham Forest and the noise around the future of their manager Steve Cooper won't go away until their results improve, no matter how unfair that seems.

These two teams are next to each other in the bottom half of the table, so you would expect this game to be close and I actually think they will end up sharing the points.

    Sutton's prediction:1-1

I am going to give this one to Fulham. It's a bit like Brighton v Brentford with two teams near each other in the table, but both these sides are closer to the relegation zone so things might be a bit more tense.

    Rhys' prediction: 1-0

Brighton have only won won of their eight league matches and Sunday's defeat by Chelsea must have been very frustrating after the Blues went down to 10 men just before half-time.

This could be another awkward game for the Seagulls too. Brentford took four points from Brighton last season and I can see them making life difficult for Roberto de Zerbi's team again.

The Bees will sit in and counter-attack well, and I can see them getting some reward.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-2

My head says a draw, but my heart says it will be a bit more exciting than that, with Brighton scoring a late winner.

    Rhys' prediction: 2-1

  7. 'Regardless of Wilder, Sheffield United have to react'published at 19:20 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2023

Sheffield United v Liverpool (19:30 GMT)

    Alex Bruce
Former Hull defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

When you come to Bramall Lane and it is rocking it doesn't matter who you are, it's a difficult place to play. So it will be a tough game for Liverpool tonight.

New manager bounce and all that, it will be interesting to see how Sheffield United do with Chris Wilder. They need a good reaction no matter who is in the dugout because the last time out they were very poor.

If they are going to make a fist of staying in the Premier League they need to start picking up results.

For this week's midweek games, Chris Sutton takes on CBeebies presenter Rhys Stephenson.

The way Bournemouth have picked up has surprised me a little bit, but they are carrying more of an attacking threat and it is paying off.

I am tempted to say the Cherries can keep their run going with a point at Selhurst Park, but I have a feeling Crystal Palace will end their poor run, and edge what should be a very tight game. I am just not 100% sure why.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-0

This one feels like a draw to me, which would be a better result for Bournemouth.

    Rhys' prediction: 1-1

  9. Rashford on benchpublished at 19:18 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2023

Manchester United v Chelsea (20:15 GMT)

    Simon Stone

To underline the significance of Marcus Rashford being left out of the Manchester United starting line-up tonight, it is worth noting the England man has started every Premier League game and Champions League game apart from two.

At Fulham, he was ill, at Galatasaray he was suspended.

This is a significant decision by Erik ten Hag.

  12. Team news - Villa welcome Kamara back from suspension; Stones starts for Citypublished at 19:15 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2023

Aston Villa v Manchester City (20:15 GMT)

After drawing 2-2 at Bournemouth on Sunday, Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has made one change.

Midfielder Boubacar Kamara returns to the starting 11 after suspension with Nicolo Zaniolo dropping to the bench.

Villa are looking to win their 14th successive home game in the league.

Aston Villa XI: Martinez, Konsa, Carlos, Torres, Digne, Luiz, Kamara, Tielemans, McGinn, Bailey, Watkins.

Subs: Marschall, Cash, Moreno, Lenglet, Diaby, Zaniolo, Duran, Dendoncker, Ramsey.

Manchester City have drawn their last three Premier League fixtures but could move within two points of league leaders Arsenal with a victory.

Pep Guardiola makes two changes after Sunday's 3-3 at home against Tottenham.

Midfielder Rodri misses out through suspension and winger Jeremy Doku is unavailable after picking up a knock at the weekend. Jack Grealish is also suspended.

John Stones makes his first appearance since 11 November after recovering from injury, while Rico Lewis also comes in.

Manchester City XI: Ederson, Walker, Dias, Gvardiol, Lewis, Akanji, Stones, Foden, Alvarez, Silva, Haaland.

A fan favourite for Liverpool and a potential successor to Hungarian legend Ferenc Puskas - Dominik Szoboszlai starts tinight.

    And he's had a pretty impressive 2023.

The 23-year-old midfielder once again took the spotlight during Hungary's 3-1 victory over Montenegro in November.

He scored two goals, downed a shot of palinka - a traditional Hungarian fruit brandy - and led the chants from the stands inside Budapest's Puskas Arena after the match.

Szoboszlai has rapidly become Hungary's leading footballer, a rise which has coincided with the national team's resurgence.

As his country's top player, Szoboszlai shoulders the weight of fans' hopes and will want to guide the team back to a place among Europe's elite.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says Trent Alexander-Arnold will play "wherever it's best for us" following his late winner from midfield against Fulham.

Alexander-Arnold started at right-back but pushed into midfield late on, sparking a debate about whether he could permanently play there.

But Klopp does not want to pin the England international to one position.

"We still have to make decisions on what is best for the team and Trent sees it exactly the same way," he said.

"Trent can play midfield, we all knew that and he can play the role really well."

Well, tonight, Alexander-Arnold starts at right-back.

  15. Guaranteed goals?published at 19:11 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2023

    Brighton v Brentford (19:30 GMT)

Brighton are the first club to score and concede in 18 consecutive top-flight fixtures since Newcastle United had a run of 21 from December 1957 to August 1958.

Brentford have scored at least twice in all five of their Premier League victories this season but are winless in the seven matches when they did not score multiple goals (drawn two, lost five).

This game was 3-3 last season, with Albion having a Premier League club record 15 shots on target.

Unai Emery has urged caution among Aston Villa fans and does not want them to look too far ahead with their ambitions for the season.

Villa head into tonight's game against champions Manchester City fourth in the Premier League table, with an opportunity to leapfrog Pep Guardiola's side if they win.

Emery was asked about Villa being in the conversation for a top-four finish and said: "We are not playing Champions League. If we are speaking about Champions League, we are wasting our time. We are playing Conference League and we have to enjoy it.

"It is better to enjoy each moment today and try to get comfortable with our supporters, try to be happy and of course if you are winning more than losing you will be more happy than not.

"But we are in the Conference League and we qualified for the next round. We are in the FA Cup next month and we want to be consistent in the Premier League. In May, this is when we can speak about where we are.

"We are focusing on each match and we can’t think how we will finish the season. We can’t know it now and it depends how we face each match.

"In 38 matches, each match is an opportunity to get three points. Against every team it is the same points against Bournemouth as it is Manchester City.

"Now, City is close with us in the table. For us, the three points is the same. At the end you have to get points to be in Champions League, to be in Europe, to be in the top 10. More or less it is 60, 70, 80 points

It is said every season around this time about Manchester City, should fans worry? But the team always find a way of going on some extraordinary run.

On recent evidence there isn't any reason why they won't again this season. However one season they will become a cropper.

We discussed Arsenal's defensive resilience this season and they are actually approaching things in a different way. They're not so expansive. You see Liverpool finding a way at the weekend. I'm not a fan but I was praying that they would just so these teams can push Manchester City hard.

You look at the strength in depth that City have in the squad and chances are we all think they'll find a way to win the league again.

Guardiola - Man City will win the Premier League title.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says his side are going to win a record fourth consecutive Premier League title this season.

City have slipped to third, three points off leaders Arsenal, after draws with Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham.

Guardiola's side have conceded eight goals in those games and thrown away leads in each, but are still favourites with the bookmakers for the title.

"My feeling today is we're going to win the Premier League," said Guardiola. "If we play at the levels that we showed against Liverpool and Tottenham, we're going to win it again.

"People don't believe it already after three draws but we feel we're going to do it again, knowing that it is not easy because no team has done it yet [won four in a row].

"The difficulty is there and was last season but, if you ask me today what I'm feeling, we're going to do it again."
