What a way to kick off this weekend's WSL action!

Five goals for Chelsea and a hat-trick and assist for Lauren James.

That result means Chelsea remain unbeaten after their first seven games of the season and extend their lead at the top of the table to six points.

That's all from me this afternoon, and I'll leave you with Michael Emons' report from Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool manager Matt Beard has just been speaking in the news conference and said: "That's the first time in a long time I've been disappointed. When you play a team like Chelsea you can't do what we did.

"I'm really disappointed in the manner of the defeat. I don't think we should concede five. It happens from time to time but I don't think Chelsea had to work hard for their goals.

"We looked like the team that got back [from Spain] at 4am instead of them and that's super frustrating."

There's five more games still left to play in the Women's Super League this weekend and they all take place tomorrow.

The big one is the final game of the day as Manchester United welcome Manchester City to Old Trafford. 45,185 tickets have already been sold and you can listen to that game on BBC Sounds and we'll have live text commentaries of every game.

I feel for whoever comes in next because they are big shoes to fill. You can see how much Emma Hayes means to the club. That will be really tough to replace, the personality and the charisma that is Emma Hayes.

Well there were five goals, and here's how the fifth occurred.

The only Chelsea goal without a Lauren James goal or assist - but she did contribute in the build-up to this one.

The players will want to perform at their best for Emma Hayes and hopefully deliver another title. Today they really reflected that with their performance. They covered all areas and were clinical.

  7. 'There is something different about this team this year'published at 15:45 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2023

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Emma Hayes: "Brilliant players, brilliant people. This year there is something different in our dressing room. Everyone is playing their role and if they are not starting they are focussing on what they need to do better. I trust in every player.

"After the week we just had, travelling non stop that was a tremendous performance.

"Lauren knows what I think of her. She is a young player still and we always want everything from young players but today she showed the best of herself. She was unstoppable.

"It is all about the team, the focus remains the same, they carry out their gameplan as we ask them to do. I am really enjoying watching my team play right now."

  8. 'Not good enough'published at 15:44 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2023

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Matt Beard: "Desperately disappointing. Chelsea are a top side but we can't give Chelsea the goals we gave them today.

"We prepared the team this week for quick set plays. We have been well and truly punished today, we shouldn't be conceding five goals.

"We have let ourselves down and let the fans down who travelled here. Chelsea wanted it more, they had the desire we didn't have for whatever reason.

    "It wasn't good enough."

    Lauren James was brilliant today.

Chelsea have so much creative freedom and James lit up the midfield. She had a fantastic performance but Chelsea all around have not skipped a beat.

Match ball in hand, Lauren James is one of the last Chelsea players to leave the pitch. Flawless from her today. That’s her first WSL hat-trick for Chelsea. Surely the first of many.

"She was telling me at the end of how proud she is and let's achieve big things this year. I had a difficult week and I am thankful for that performance.

"When I am playing with a smile and I have happiness, who knows what can happen."

  16. Good news for Chelsea and Englandpublished at 15:31 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2023

    FT: Chelsea 5-1 Liverpool

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea cruised to victory with a stunning second-half display to pull well clear of Liverpool.

Lauren James was just unstoppable today. Three goals, one assist, she started the move for the other goal and Liverpool just could not handle her.

Good news for Chelsea and good news for England, with their vital Nations League match at Wembley against the Netherlands coming up on 1 December - with the Lionesses needing to win to keep alive their hopes of making it to the Olympics in Paris next year.

However, James in this form is very much bad news for the rest of the WSL teams.

Chelsea six points clear. Superb performance.
