They cannot live with Lauren James. When she is playing like this I don't think anyone in the world would be able to get near her.

She has had a brilliant afternoon.

That is lovely footwork from Lauren James. She darts down the wing and drops her shoulder to get past the Liverpool defence. Sophie Ingle's header is then cleared behind for a corner.

It's three for Lauren James and a truly deserved hat-trick. She has been absolutely superb today

Only moments after she released Sam Kerr, whose shot was saved, James gets her fourth goal involvement of the afternoon, getting to substitute Johanna Rytting Kaneryd's pull-back just before team-mate Sjoeke Nusken could do.

Emma Hayes joked yesterday she was still vulnerable to getting sacked in her last season at Chelsea before becoming USA manager.

Chelsea, hunting down a fifth successive title, are heading six points clear and doing so in style. Ominous signs for the rest of the WSL

    Chelsea 4-1 Liverpool

Is this a goal? Have Liverpool scored?

It's not. There's a lot of confusion after the referee blows her whistle but Liverpool remain three goals behind.

Zecira Musovic produced an incredible save to deny a Gemma Bonner header before an even better Eve Perisset clearance hooked it away from the goal-line.

  6. Postpublished at 69 mins

    Chelsea 4-1 Liverpool

Chelsea are well on top in terms of the scoreline but Liverpool are still fighting in this game.

Zecira Musovic mistimes a goal-kick and Shanice van de Sanden tries to create a chance, but she can't get past the Chelsea defence.

    Chelsea 4-1 Liverpool

If you're wondering how Johanna Rytting Kaneryd was able to provide that assist, it's because she replaced Aggie Beever-Jones a few minutes ago.

Less than a minute between her introduction and assist.

Wow. She is having a fantastic afternoon, she has been brilliant.

Lauren James has one thing on her mind there and that was to put the ball into the back of the net.

It was set up really nicely for her.

  9. goal

    Lauren James (64 mins)

    She has her hat-trick!

Four goals for Chelsea, three goals for Lauren James.

Johanna Rytting Kaneryd chops inside from the right-hand side and finds James in the middle of the box, who easily taps home.

    Ooh.

Sam Kerr breaks forwards and has her chance to get on the scoresheet but Rachael Laws is attentive and palms her close-range shot away.

That was a big call. The Liverpool bench is all up with their arms in the air. They were expecting a penalty and the Liverpool players were too.

It is on the edge of the box, it is very tight.

  12. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 63 mins

    Chelsea 3-1 Liverpool

The referee doesn't listen to Liverpool's claims for a penalty.

Shanice van de Sanden sends another cross into the box and Ceri Holland falls to the ground on the edge of the box after a challenge with Erin Cuthbert, but no penalty is given.

  13. A point to prove?published at 14:51 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2023

    Chelsea 3-1 Liverpool

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at Stamford Bridge

She was left out of the starting line-up for the Champions League tie on Wednesday against Real Madrid and Lauren James is certainly playing as if she has a point to prove.

She came on and hit the crossbar in the 2-2 draw in Spain and has been absolutely superb here today. Two goals, one assist and very probably guiding her team to three points. A cracking angled finish for Chelsea's third.

Emma Hayes in the Chelsea technical area loved it, as did the home fans at Stamford Bridge.

It's a long way back for Liverpool now.

    Chelsea 3-1 Liverpool

Liverpool continue to knock on the door, though.

It's Shanice van de Sanden who creates yet another chance as she drills a cross into the box and miscommunication means Zecira Musovic can't catch it and Eve Perisset has to head behind.

  15. Postpublished at 60 mins

    Chelsea 3-1 Liverpool

For those who like expected goals statistics, Chelsea have 1.61 and Liverpool have just 0.22.

That goes some way to illustrating how much control Chelsea have had.

  16. 'World class'published at 14:47 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2023

    Chelsea 3-1 Liverpool

    Gilly Flaherty

What a world class finish from Lauren James, from that angle and that far out. What a finish. Incredible.

For me, the distances all game Liverpool have been off them and they gave James too much space there.

  17. goal

GOAL Chelsea 3-1 Liverpoolpublished at 14:46 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2023

    Lauren James (56 mins)

    She has another!

Chelsea have a two-goal cushion and it's a brilliant strike from Lauren James to score her second of the afternoon.

She's teed up by Sam Kerr on the edge of the area. James is wide and it's a tight angle but she rifles across the face of goal.

She's been involved in all three of Chelsea's goals today.

  18. Postpublished at 56 mins

Immediately after Shanice van de Sanden's chance Chelsea go forwards with Lauren James trying to curl a cross towards Sjoeke Nusken, but her ball is overhit.

  19. Postpublished at 55 mins

Shanice van de Sanden tries her luck once again but she can't quite get herself settled after taking a heavy touch and launches her spinning efffort wide of the far post.

  20. Postpublished at 52 mins

    Chelsea 2-1 Liverpool

There's a cheer from the home fans as Sam Kerr is unleashed behind the Liverpool defence but she goes too wide with her run and ends up being closed down.
