United caught out twice by Route One Football. Disappointing by United

    Mike

Lauren James: so cool, so calm, so collected. Makes it look so easy.

  3. 'James is always scoring those'published at 14:17 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Chelsea 3-1 Manchester United

    Fara Williams
Former England midfielder on BBC Two

James hasn't been in the game as much in this second half as she was in the first, but she has turned up and got her third.

You let James go one v one with your goalkeeper, and she is always scoring. She makes up the ground, Le Tissier can't get back, and she slots it past Earps.

  4. goal

GOAL - Chelsea 3-1 Manchester Unitedpublished at 14:16 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Lauren James (85 mins)

Back to back league hat-tricks at Stamford Bridge. Lauren James is a woman for the big occasion.

A poor kick by Mary Earps, it is flicked back to James who gets away from Maya Le Tissier and slots left footed into the far corner.

Surely that is three points wrapped up for Chelsea now.

  5. Postpublished at 14 mins

    Brighton 0-0 Bristol City

Brighton don't look like a side down near the foot of the table, they're playing some lovely football. There's a clear system in play.

  6. Postpublished at 14:12 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Chelsea 2-1 Manchester United

Guro Reiten's delivery from the corner is dangerous, but well cleared.

  7. YELLOW CARDpublished at 14:12 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Chelsea 2-1 Manchester United

More annoyance for Manchester United as Nikita Parris gives away a free kick just outside their area, after Erin Cuthbert dispossessed Rachel Williams. Parris is booked as a result.

The free kick is cleared only as far as Melanie Leupolz, who has a shot blocked behind for a corner.

  8. 'United going for it now'published at 14:11 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Chelsea 2-1 Manchester United

    Fara Williams
Former England midfielder on BBC Two

Manchester United are going for it now with replacing a midfielder for a striker.

Rachel Williams will surely add some pressure to this Chelsea defence in the last ten minutes or so.

  9. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 14:10 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Chelsea 2-1 Manchester United

Rachel Williams replaces Ella Toone. Can she pull yet another late goal out the bag for Manchester United and Marc Skinner?

  10. CLOSE!published at 9 mins

    Brighton 0-0 Bristol City

The first real attack from Bristol City is a good one, patiently working the overlap on the right and pinging a ball into the middle but Amalie Thestrup can't wrap her instep around the ball and slices her shot wide.

Moments later Jamie-Lee Napier fires in a volley that flies wide. Better from City.

Never a pen in a month of Sundays. Six of one and half a dozen of the other. Stay on your feet and get the shot away instead of throwing yourself to the floor.

    Chelsea 2-1 Manchester United

    Adam Millington
    BBC Sport at Stamford Bridge

That is a big call by referee Abigail Byrne.

The Manchester United players and staff aren't happy with her decision to not hand their side a penalty after Leah Galton went down and the bench have definitely made their thoughts known to the fourth official.

Byrne didn't think that, though, and the contact wasn't enough for her to point to the spot.

  13. Postpublished at 6 mins

    Brighton 0-0 Bristol City

Brighton again look to set Elisabeth Terland in on goal but she's well shepherded out. The Norwegian scored 48% of Brighton and Hove Albion’s goals in 2023.

A draw isn't good enough for Utd, Williams should be on now not with 10 minutes to go when they're desperate.

  15. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 14:07 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Chelsea 2-1 Manchester United

A defensive change for Chelsea, as Kadeisha Buchanan - who has looked shaky at times today - is replaced by Jess Carter.

  16. 'Great decision, not much in it'published at 14:06 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Chelsea 2-1 Manchester United

    Fara Williams
Former England midfielder on BBC Two

The referee is in a good position, great decision.

When I first saw it I thought Lawrence might have gotten away with one.

But having seen a replay, there's not much in it. I think Galton is trying to buy a penalty there.

If there had been VAR in operation they would not have overturned that.

  17. YELLOW CARDpublished at 14:05 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Chelsea 2-1 Manchester United

There's suddenly a bit of needle to this one. Erin Cuthbert gets a booking for saying something out of order.

  18. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 14:05 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Chelsea 2-1 Manchester United

Leah Galton bursts into the area, and goes to ground under pressure from Ashley Lawrence - no penalty given!

Certainly there was minimal contact, and Galton goes down very easily.

  19. Postpublished at 14:03 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Brighton 0-0 Bristol City

The dangerous Elisabeth Terland is immediately into action for Brighton, dribbling into the area but losing her footing just as she was about to let fly. It's a high-tempo start from the hosts.

  20. CLOSE!published at 14:02 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Chelsea 2-1 Manchester United

Lauren James is poised to fire in a good shooting position on the left of the area, only to be blocked at the last second by Jayde Riviere.
