There's a lights show going on at the Etihad as the teams emerge from the tunnel.

FC Copenhagen fans have travelled in good numbers from Denmark.

The atmosphere is not as intense as it was on Sunday for the Manchester derby but there's still one heck of a noise.

Haaland: Man City striker on winning mentality

Erling Haaland says he can still improve despite having scored 80 goals in 84 appearances for the Treble winners. Last week the 23-year-old Norway international scored five in City's FA Cup fifth-round win at Luton.

He won last season's Premier League Golden Boot and is top of this season's standings despite missing nearly two months with a foot injury.

"There's a lot of things I can become better at," he said. "People say I'm good at scoring goals but I missed the biggest chance in the world ever two days ago."

Scott McKenna will be hoping for better luck than he had at Etihad Stadium last season.

The Scotland international was part of the Nottingham Forest side beaten 6-0 in the Premier League in August 2022.

McKenna was ostracised at Forest earlier this campaign when Steve Cooper was still manager and didn't get his place back following Nuno Espirito Santo's arrival in December.

With his Forest contract expiring in the summer, his time at the City Ground is at an end. It is not beyond the realms of possibility that his loan period with FC Copenhagen is extended beyond the summer.

Leipzig head to Madrid on the back of a 4-1 win at Bochum which left them fifth in the Bundesliga.

Defender Mohamed Simakan is suspended for the second leg, while Lukas Klostermann is doubtful because of a hip problem.

Leipzig coach Marco Rose said: “We are going to travel to Madrid and try everything. We want to be the most difficult opponent possible for Madrid so that they really have to stretch.”

Manchester City will reach the Champions League quarter-finals for the sixth season on the trot if they avoid a calamitous defeat at Etihad Stadium.

That is the longest current record of anyone in Europe - Bayern Munich last night made it five quarter-finals in a row.

It is the second longest run by any English club.

Manchester United made it seven quarter-finals in a row between 1996-97 and 2002-03.

I doubt anyone would be surprised if City eclipsed that record.

Since the first leg, FC Copenhagen have won all three matches in the Danish Superligaen without conceding. They sit three points behind leaders Midtjylland.

"We know we are 3-1 down, playing the best team in the world," said Copenhagen boss Jacob Neestrup.

"It is close to impossible but we will be ready for this and will try our absolute best for Danish football.

"We might not be able to get through but it makes a massive difference if we put in a good performance rather than completely fold. It might be a miracle but we have to chase it."

  15. What happened in Copenhagen?published at 19:35 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March

Man City v FC Copenhagen (3-1 agg)

Manchester City continued their Champions League defence with a comfortable victory in Denmark's capital in the first leg.

After Kevin de Bruyne gave Pep Guardiola's side an early lead, it looked like they would go on to claim a big win as the hosts barely laid a glove on them.

But Ederson gifted the ball straight to Copenhagen with a poor clearance and Magnus Mattsson took full advantage with a fantastic strike.

Bernardo Silva put City ahead again with a clever flick after a ball from De Bruyne deflected through to him.

De Bruyne and Erling Haaland had further chances to add to the lead and, although City were not quite at their attacking best, they ensured they left with a two-goal cushion thanks to Phil Foden's late strike.

"The biggest players appear on the biggest stages," said Guardiola afterwards.

"It's the hour of truth. We have to do our job and finish it."

Manchester City are in the knockout stages of the Champions League for an 11th successive season.

Pep Guardiola has been responsible for eight of those campaigns.

In his programme notes this evening, Guardiola puts the achievement down to hard work.

"The record shows how consistent we have been," said the City boss.

"We work hard every single day to be as good as we can be and to be here again is a reflection of the dedication and professionalism all our players and staff show.

"It's important to take a moment to remember this because, honestly, it is so hard to do what we have done over many years."

  18. Bellingham to miss Real's next two La Liga matchespublished at 19:27 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March

Real Madrid v RB Leipzig (1-0 agg)

Jude Bellingham sent off for Real MadridImage source, Rex Features

Jude Bellingham was sent off after the final whistle after being denied a late winner in Real Madrid’s 2-2 La Liga draw at Valencia on Saturday.

The England midfielder, making his return from injury, thought he had headed home a cross in the ninth minute of stoppage time at the Mestalla but the referee had already blown for full time.

Real players surrounded the official in a chaotic aftermath and Bellingham was shown the red card before the players left the field. It made for a dramatic ending to a compelling La Liga clash in which the leaders had fought back from 2-0 down with two Vinicius Jr goals.

Bellingham has received a two-game La Liga ban, meaning he will miss matches against Celta Vigo at home on Sunday and Osasuna away the following Saturday, but is able to play tonight against RB Leipzig.

When asked about the incident, Real head coach Carlo Ancelotti said: “I haven’t spoken to him, I don’t need to speak to him about it. He is doing very well.

“What happened the other day, the red card was wrong. He had a bit of frustration, but he didn’t make any kind of insult.”

Gandalf: Copenhagen may not have the strongest squad in the world but they were physical, determined and organised. Little surprise that they out performed Man Utd. 3-1 to take back to the Etihad is a great result for City.

  20. You again?published at 19:22 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March

Man City v FC Copenhagen (3-1 agg)

This is FC Copenhagen's second visit to Manchester in five months.

On their last visit they lost 1-0 at Manchester United in the group stage before beating the Red Devils 4-3 back in Denmark.

"It's simple," said FC Copenhagen coach Jacob Neestrup on the difference between playing United and City.

"Manchester City right now is a better team. We played three very good clubs in the group stage but this is a level or two up. All teams can feel that difference when they play against City."
