The biggest compliment I can give to Phil Foden is that Kevin de Bruyne was out for a while and everyone said Manchester City would not be the same without him. Foden has stepped up and played amazingly well.

The question was how would he respond when De Bruyne came back. De Bruyne is number one, the best midfielder in the world, and it always seemed to me that Foden was playing within himself when De Bruyne was in the team.

But, as soon as De Bruyne has been back, Foden has not dropped his standard. He said: 'I'm the main man in this team.' He has had a run of games and he is delivering. He's playing the best in the Premier League right now.

So Pep's not thinking of impending visit to Anfield. Sure he is with KDB, Walker, Stones and B Silva on bench!

Finally! The sun made a long-awaited appearance in Manchester earlier and some fans even turned up in sunglasses. Not long now until the clocks change and the nights get lighter.

Will we get a full house for this one? There were still tickets available on the Manchester City website on the eve of the game.

Imagine where FC Copenhagen would be if they had signed Erling Haaland?

"I was on trial [at Copenhagen] in 2016 and a couple of guys wanted me then but it didn’t happen,” Manchester City's 28-goal leading scorer said on the eve of the tie.

“Sad for them. I like the club, it’s a nice club. I have friends who play for them, they enjoy it. I spoke with [former boss] Stale Solbakken and got a shirt with number nine that I have at home.

“It never happened and my destiny was another way. It’s worked out so far.”

Brahim Diaz celebrates scoring for Real MadridImage source, Reuters

A brilliant goal by Brahim Diaz handed Real Madrid the advantage following the first leg of their Champions League last-16 meeting with RB Leipzig.

Diaz curled a superb finish into the top corner three minutes after half-time to give Real the win in Germany. The Spanish midfielder started in place of Jude Bellingham, who missed the game because of injury.

His goal puts Real in a good position to reach the quarter-finals for the 12th time in the past 14 seasons.

Leipzig frustrated Real until the 48th minute, when former Manchester City midfielder Diaz turned on the right touchline and beat two players, before dancing past several others and curling the ball into the top corner.

The Spaniards could not add to their score however, coming closest when Vinicius Jr struck the outside of the post having been set through by the impressive Diaz.

They were also grateful to goalkeeper Andriy Lunin - who kept a clean sheet despite Leipzig having nine shots on target - and for the decision to disallow Benjamin Sesko's second-minute header.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said yesterday he wouldn't start thinking about Sunday's crucial Premier League trip to Liverpool until tonight's game was out of the way.

    His team selection says otherwise.

Guardiola has made seven changes to the side that beat Manchester United.

Only Ederson, Ruben Dias, Rodri and Erling Haaland - the spine of his team admittedly - keep their places.

  10. Team news - Nacho starts for Realpublished at 18:57 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March

Real Madrid v RB Leipzig (1-0 agg)

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti decides to go for more solidity as Spain defender Nacho starts in place of Brazil forward Rodrygo.

That is the only change from Ancelotti's team which drew 2-2 at La Liga rivals Valencia on Sunday.

England's Jude Bellingham could play in a more advanced position, while Brahim Diaz - the matchwinner in the first leg - has to settle for a place on the bench.

Striker Joselu, who was doubtful with an ankle injury, is also a substitute. Keeper Thibaut Courtois, along with defenders David Alaba and Eder Militao, remain long-term absentees with knee injuries.

Real Madrid XI: Lunin, Carvajal, Nacho, Rudiger, Mendy, Valverde, Tchouameni, Kroos, Bellingham, Camavinga, Vinicius Jr.

Visitors RB Leipzig make two changes as they aim to overturn their first-leg deficit.

Belgium striker Loïs Openda will lead the line after coming off the bench in Saturday's Bundesliga win at Bochum, while defensive midfielder Xaver Schlager returns after serving a domestic suspension.

RB Leipzig XI: Gulacsi, Henrichs, Orban, Castello, Raum, Simons, Haidara, Schlager, Olmo, Sesko, Openda.

With talk already turning to the weekend and Sunday's Premier League blockbuster at Liverpool, Manchester City could probably have done without a midweek Champions League knockout tie.

But Pep Guardiola and his players have a job to finish against FC Copenhagen as they look to close in on back-to-back Trebles.

Will the defending champions of Europe be travelling to Anfield on the back of another resounding victory?
