  • Coventry beat Wolves in Saturday's other quarter-final

  • Chelsea v Leicester and Man Utd v Liverpool follow on Sunday

  1. Nightmare start for Newcastlepublished at 17:50 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    Man City 1-0 Newcastle

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Etihad Stadium

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is standing with his hands on hips looking thoroughly disconsolate. Such a soft goal to concede so early on.

Having to chase the game against this Manchester City side is the nightmare scenario.

  2. YELLOW CARDpublished at 18 mins

    Man City 1-0 Newcastle

Pretty early for your central defender to be getting a yellow card but Fabian Schar finds himself in the book.

That means if Newcastle do go through here he will be ruled out of the semi-final.

  3. 'Willock is thinking about Foden'published at 17:48 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    Man City 1-0 Newcastle

    Danny Murphy
Former England midfielder on BBC One

Willock is thinking about Foden's role but he's got to let one of the back three to deal with that, otherwise the wing-back is going to keep getting these two v ones, which are a problem.

  4. Postpublished at 15 mins

    Man City 1-0 Newcastle

Manchester City quickly looking for a second one with a lovely bit of play between Mateo Kovacic and Erling Haaland.

The Norwegian is through but it's eventually cleared.

  5. 'A nothing goal'published at 17:46 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    Man City 1-0 Newcastle

    Danny Murphy
Former England midfielder on BBC One

Willock is too narrow, he doesn't need to be that far in and Dan Burn can't do anything. That's the fourth or fifth time it's happened. Of course there's a bit of luck, but that's been coming on that side, all of City's chances are coming down that side.

I don't think it's a lack of effort from Willock, I think it's more of a lack of understanding of his position. It's a nothing goal.

  6. goal

GOAL - Man City 1-0 Newcastlepublished at 17:43 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    Bernardo Silva (13 mins)

Well it's taken a wicked deflection but Manchester City won't care.

Bernardo Silva chops in just inside the penalty area and whips one goal-bound. It takes a massive deflection off Dan Burn and lands in the back of the net.

It's unlucky but no Newcastle shirts closed Silva down in the first place.

  7. 'A great passage of play'published at 17:41 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    Man City 0-0 Newcastle

    Danny Murphy
Former England midfielder on BBC One

A great passage of play, good defending from the two Newcastle defenders. Botman forced Doku into the pass. Doku waited the right time, it was just a poor pass.

  8. Postpublished at 10 mins

    Man City 0-0 Newcastle

The game is starting to open up a bit.

Newcastle give the ball away in the middle of the park and City pile forward. Jeremy Doku surges through with Erling Haaland and Phil Foden either side of him but he waits too long to play the ball and Newcastle clear the danger.

  9. Postpublished at 9 mins

    Man City 0-0 Newcastle

Phil Foden slots through for Jeremy Doku but Jacob Murphy hustles him off the ball with a really clever bit of defending.

  10. 'De Bruyne is still probably the best midfielder in the world'published at 17:39 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    Man City 0-0 Newcastle

    Danny Murphy
Former England midfielder on BBC One

Kevin De Bruyne is still probably the best midfielder in the Premier League, if not the world right now, but City have still won game after game without him.

  11. Postpublished at 8 mins

    Man City 0-0 Newcastle

Don't see those very often. Rodri gives the ball away on the edge of the Newcastle area as City try to build an attack.

It flies out for a Newcastle goal kick. No real chances for either side so far with eight minutes on the clock.

  12. Postpublished at 6 mins

    Man City 0-0 Newcastle

Jacob Murphy curls in a teasing ball into a decent area but Ruben Dias gets a toe to it to make sure the ball doesn't make it's way to a Newcastle shirt.

  13. Postpublished at 4 mins

    Man City 0-0 Newcastle

Off goes Erling Haaland but Sven Botman brings him down and City win a free-kick just past the half-way line.

Too far out for City to try anything so they revert to just knocking it around.

  14. 'A curveball from Newcastle'published at 17:34 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    Man City 0-0 Newcastle

    Danny Murphy
Former England midfielder on BBC One

It looks like Newcastle are playing a three or five at the back when they are defending, a little curve ball in their defending.

  15. Postpublished at 2 mins

    Man City 0-0 Newcastle

As expected, Manchester City are dominating possession in these early stages.

  16. 'Foden is a joy to watch'published at 17:31 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    Man City 0-0 Newcastle

    Danny Murphy
Former England midfielder on BBC One

Foden has been magnificent and his performances have got progressively better as the season has gone on. He looks like a match-winner nearly every time he plays. He is a joy to watch.

  17. KICK-OFFpublished at 17:31 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

  19. 'City have to be off it for Newcastle to have any chance'published at 17:29 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

Man City v Newcastle (17:30 GMT)

    Danny Murphy
Former England midfielder on BBC One

City have got to be off it for Newcastle to win here and every Newcastle player has to be at least an 8/10. We've already seen one cup upset today, so never say never.
