Pirelli's motorsport director Paul Hembery asked by BBC Sport's Tom Clarkson whether he was surprised to see Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel attempt a one-stop strategy: "You have to be a little bit because it was the only car doing that.

"We felt it was a two-stop race and some tried for a three-stop. Sometimes you try something different and if it delivers exceptional results, you'e a genius."

What about Vettel's reaction?

"You have to give him the benefit of the doubt. He is hot, angry and frustrated at not getting the result he wanted. I am not going to criticise him for that."

It seems Nico Rosberg, whose tyre exploded spectacularly in practice on Friday, agrees with Sebastian Vettel's view about the tyres.

"It was pretty scary again," he said. "A couple of metres earlier he has a big off. He was lucky just like I was, he didn't hit anything but it needs to be sorted out. 

"Somehow we need to make it safer, somehow we need to see the tyre failing earlier. If they are not able to completely solve the problem in the next couple of weeks - Monza is high speed again - we need to have something in place for that."

"Mistakes will happen but it's an embarrassing one for Williams. These sort of things shouldn't happen."

One of the more unusual moments in that race was Valtteri Bottas being sent out with one medium tyre and three soft tyres on. This is what Bottas had to say about that:

"I have never seen that happen before. One tyre felt a bit odd and then I heard there was one prime tyre. Obviously very disappointed to hear I got a penalty for that and lost places today.

"We need to learn from this. For sure it is disappointing at this moment."

"Before we start apportioning blame and slagging off and ridiculing the manufacturers of the tyre - Pirelli - was an instruction given [to make a tyre] that made a one-stop not feasible. If that was the case, Sebastian Vettel owes them an apology."

More from a furious Vettel: 

"This sort of thing keeps going around but it's not acceptable.

"What's the answer? Cut, debris, driver running wide... if Nico says he didn't go off the track, he didn't.

"I didn't go off the track but, out of the blue, the tyre explodes. It's not acceptable."

There were a few swear words in this interview too...

Sebastian Vettel is VERY angry after his right rear tyre exploded with two laps to go.

He has just told BBC Sport's Lee McKenzie: "Things like that are not allowed - if that happens 200 metres earlier, I am not standing here right now."

Lee McKenzie said earlier Sebastian Vettel is angry. Yep, he is angry.

Red Bull's Daniil Kvyat (fourth) speaking to BBC Sport: "The second half of the race was almost perfect - in the end we were just flying. We were able to overtake cars that are more competitive than us.

"The beginning of the season was pretty tough for us but we are learning how to adapt. It will not be easy in Monza - we will have to compromise but we are capable of doing it."

Mercedes have now scored in 50 consecutive grands prix but, somewhat surprisingly, it is their first win at Spa since Juan Manuel Fangio in 1955.

Mercedes' team boss Toto Wolff speaking to BBC Sport's Tom Clarkson: "It was very good from Lewis, clean off the line and maintained the gap for a well-deserved win.

"It was definitely a very good win. Qualifying was awesome and a race without mistakes."

Force India's Sergio Perez, who finished fifth: "I think we can be strong from now on and see this kind of performance more often. I was not totally happy with the pace in the race."

Lewis Hamilton's win - the 39th of his career - means he moves alongside a legend of the sport. He is level with Ayrton Senna on 80 podium finishes - fourth on the all-time list.

And a bit more from Lewis: "It is way too early to say that [he is closing in on the world title]. Key is turning poles into wins and hopefully today is the beginning of that."

Romain Grosjean, who finished third: "The guys have been working hard to give us the car to be where are today. Being here today is special for us, it has the prize of a race win."
