Lewis Hamilton has had to abandon two flying laps - one due to a lock up, one due to traffic on the track...

Red Bull's Max Verstappen responding to being asked by BBC's F1 chief writer Andrew Benson if he would beat Lewis Hamilton in the same car?
"Probably I will sound really arrogant, but for sure."
The red-walled super softs are doing wonders for the lap times here at the Sakhir circuit.

Pirelli's prediction has come true. We are seeing the first car out on the super softs - first up is Sebastian Vettel, followed very closely by Valtteri Bottas.

It looked a bit ominous in Sainz's Toro Rosso. Maybe an electrical issue. I think he thought the better of it where he was stopping - he drove down to the marshal's post.
The fire extinguisher might have gone off because of the fire.
Sainz appears to have had some sort of power unit failure - a few of these cars aren't handling the heat that well.
Uh oh...
Carlos Sainz's Toro Rosso has just had to pull off the track after a huge plume of smoke appeared at the rear....

Everyone still out of the softs by the way - Pirelli say there will still be a lot of "track evolution" in this practice session.
They think everyone will look to change to the super softs in about half an hour to simulate the exact track conditions of Sunday's race.
Fine margins...
After a successful practice start, Fernando Alonso's rear end kicked out at turn one after a huge lock up. He has set a time though: 1:34:480.
Now the two Ferrari's are out and Sebastian Vettel - on softs - records his first timed lap.
Oo a little slide on turn five but recovered well.
Ahhh! Ohhhh! There they are - the sparks - the just look brilliant!
Vettel sets the pace with a 1:32:615...
Kimi Raikkonen comes straight back in to the pits...
The two Haas cars are out first under the lights.
It's looking pretty dreamy out there although I am sure for many of those in fireproof suits in the pit lane, a light breeze wouldn't go a miss...
And we are away...

You have to feel for McLaren’s Stoffel Vandoorne. He has had a very troubled started to his first full grand prix season.
The Belgian, who is rated highly as a potential future superstar, out-qualified team-mate Jenson Button on a one-off debut for McLaren here last year. But this season has not gone as well.
While Fernando Alonso has reminded all of his enduring quality with two spectacular performances in Australia and Bahrain, a car problem in qualifying in Australia left him 18th on the grid and he finished last in a race for most of which Alonso was running 10th.
And in China he was simply off Alonso’s pace all Saturday and Sunday. Now he’s had an engine failure that will cost him crucial running in Bahrain.
Since he was announced as Button’s replacement, Vandoorne has been asked repeatedly how he felt about the challenge of going up against Alonso in his debut season - about as tough as it gets. He has said he was confident in his ability. He still is, but insiders say 2017 been a bit of a rude shock so far.
