Pascal Wehrlein is whisked away for a precautionary check-up. He said he was OK, but hopefully that hefty shunt hasn't aggravated the injury he suffered at the Race of Champions.

While we wait for second practice to get back under way, worth noting that Nico Hulkenberg continues to impress as the best of the rest. The top six are a class apart but Hulkenberg is seventh, 1.2 seconds off the pace.

McLaren are also quietly going about their business. Fernando Alonso is currently P8, 1.3 seconds off the benchmark time.

Pascal Wehrlein lost the back end of his Sauber in pretty much the same spot as Antonio Giovinazzi in first practice and could do nothing as he slid into the barriers at high speed.

The crane is on to lift the heavily damaged Sauber off the track.

Max Verstappen loses a fair chunk of time in the final sector and he stays sixth quickest.

Just half a second separate the top six. Not much between the top three teams.

Tweakage done, Max Verstappen is out now on the super-soft compound.

Lewis Hamilton is also back out for another run on super-softs, so we're not quite done with qualifying simulation runs yet...

"I feel like I can go quicker," says Daniel Ricciardo.

He's told to go for it.

The Australian is just 0.019s away from beating the fastest ever lap time set here - a 1:18.436 set by Rubens Barrichello in 2004.

Now Dan's hooking it up! Ricciardo nails his qualifying simulation lap to go fastest of everybody with a 1:18.455.

Kimi Raikkonen does the old turn it off and back on again as a system reboot gets him back up and running. He scoots on back to the pits so Ferrari can take a closer look at the issue, if there is one.

Felipe Massa spins at the exit of Turn 5, briefly bringing out the yellow flags before the camera cuts to a crawling Ferrari.

It's Kimi Raikkonen as he slowly pulls off the track. "I have no power," he reports. "What can I do?"

Blink and you'll miss it! There's more movement at the top of the order than a Salsa class as Valtteri Bottas splits the Ferraris, clocking 1:18.656, just 0.018s down on Sebastian Vettel's time.

No sign of the Red Bulls for their qualifying runs yet, though...

That time Raikkonen set on the super-softs was slower than Hamilton set on the softs, which isn't hugely encouraging.

The front runners are out on super-softs and you know what that means - qualifying runs o'clock. Kimi Raikkonen is the first to set a time on the red-walled compound and goes second quickest with 1:18.980.
