Antonio Giovinazzi has his poker face on, but that's got to be hugely annoying for the Italian.

He enjoyed a hugely impressive debut in Australia when he stepped in for the injured Pascal Wehrlein, but a few crashes here and there since then has raised one or two eyebrows.

  2. red flag

Red flag and it's a hugely frustrating end to the session for Antonio Giovinazzi.

The Italian, in for Kevin Magnussen this morning, sideswipes the barrier at Turn 11 and his front left wheel ends up twisted all out of position.

There's a few more times on the board now with the Mercedes pair leading the way. Valtteri Bottas is quickest so far with 1:19.451 with Lewis Hamilton two tenths down on his team-mate.

  4. Should Vettel be worried?published at 09:32 British Summer Time 28 July 2017

For Ferrari, this is an important race weekend. Since they finished one-two in Monaco, Mercedes have won three of the four races and only lost the fourth because of Lewis Hamilton’s loose head rest. In addition, Mercedes have scored nearly twice as many points in that period - 151 compared to Ferrari’s 79.

But Sebastian Vettel, who still leads the championship by a point from Hamilton, insists he is not overly concerned.

“We were very close to winning in Austria,” he said. “I don’t think we were lacking any speed there and that’s only two races ago. Now, Silverstone for sure was not the best race for us, but sometimes things go wrong and then it’s not so pleasant. In many ways it was not such a good weekend for us. Obviously the last two laps didn’t help, but these things happen. Sometimes you suffer a puncture. It will not be the last one, unfortunately, in my life, and it has happened to all of us. You have a lot of races, some will be better, some will be worse. Now, the last couple were maybe not fantastic but I’m very positive. We come here and we know the car is strong, we know we have a chance to fight for victory and that’s good news.”

It's a very slippery surface as now Sebastian Vettel spins at Turn 9, losing the rear of his Ferrari, and he ends up in the gravel with his nose facing the wrong way.

Only a minor blip, but Vettel desperately needs a perfect weekend to fend off a resurgent Lewis Hamilton.

And now Romain Grosjean spins down at Turn 11, the rear of his Haas tapping the barrier.

"There's something wrong with the rear of the car," says the Frenchman, who then heads back to base.

    Yellow flags.

Stoffel Vandoorne ends up looking like a carsize fidget spinner as he loses the rear of his McLaren at Turn 2. No major drama and he is able to get himself back up and running.

"Did the engine stop or did you lose the car," Vandoorne is asked.

"Erm, sounded like the engine," he replies.

A lovely day in Hungary as fans continue to arrive at Hungaroring.

I managed to get sunburnt and soaked on the same day at Silverstone, such was the interchangeable weather. It's expected to be dry throughout the weekend in Hungary, however.

    Happy to have the halo?

Cazzy4Kimi: Halo is not the best looking thing ever but if it prevents further deaths in motorsport then go for it.

Mark Rogers: How anyone can complain about the aesthetics of the halo which is there for safety when we have shark fins defies belief.

A reminder of the driver changes this morning. Alfonso Celis and Antonio Giovinazzi getting a run out. No times yet from either of the two, who have done four and two laps of the circuit respectively so far this morning.

Ten minutes in and all 20 cars have popped out for at least one lap. We've also got time on the board, Daniel Ricciardo doing a 1:21.212 in the Red Bull. That's about 1.2 seconds slower than the pole position lap time in Hungary last year.

    Breaking

    Andrew Benson

Some breaking news this morning and Sauber have signed a "multi-year" engine deal with Ferrari from 2018.

The move, a day after Sauber announced they had cancelled their planned switch to Honda engines in 2018, is a continuation of a relationship that started in 2010.

Team principal Frederic Vasseur said the partnership would "allow us to move forward swiftly and efficiently".

Sources say the deal is likely to see French Formula 2 front-runner Charles Leclerc, a Ferrari protege, promoted to Formula 1 with Sauber in 2018.

The team this year run Swede Marcus Ericsson and German Pascal Wehrlein. Ericsson's backers are part-owners of the team but Wehrlein is funded by Mercedes.

This might be right up there with Lewis Hamilton’s favourite tracks, but its tight and twisty layout should also close things up at the front.

The low ‘power effect’ means Red Bull should be closer to the front and Lewis Hamilton for one has an eye on them.

“I heard the Red Bulls have an upgrade,” he said, apparently not remembering that he heard this from Daniel Ricciardo, who revealed it in the pre-British Grand Prix news conference a fortnight ago, “and this should be a good race for them. It’s not a very power sensitive circuit so this should be a close race between the top three teams.”
