Romain Grosjean is back out, but not happy.

"I've got A LOT of understeer," he reports.

A busy old morning for the Haas crew.

Even quicker now by Daniel Ricciardo as a 1:18.486 puts him three tenths clear of Lewis Hamilton.

    Flying.

No-one has led more laps in Hungary than Lewis Hamilton. In fact, no-one is even close to the Briton. Hamilton has led 344 laps of the Hungaroring. Fernando Alonso has led the second most with 141.

    Now then.

Daniel Ricciardo has just gone quickest of all, putting in a 1:18.852 on the super-softs to go 0.006s clear of Lewis Hamilton.

Could the Red Bulls be in with a shout this weekend? If Lewis Hamilton wasn't so dominant here I'd say we were in for one of the most open races so far in 2017.

Phil Slocombe: Worrying times for Vettel only 6th fastest, but it's only practice.

  7. Postpublished at 10:07 British Summer Time 28 July 2017

It's ONLY first practice, and I am certainly no psychologist, but there's some very serious, possibly concerned, faces in the Ferrari garage as Sebastian Vettel runs wide, losing something off his car as he rumbles over the kerb.

He's had a scrappy session and is currently only sixth quickest...

The McLarens are tres bien so far in this session. Both cars are in the top 10, with Fernando Alonso eighth quickest and Stoffel Vandoorne 10th.

There's optimism that McLaren can do quite well here this weekend. Fernando Alonso to replicate Damon Hill's drive in Hungary back in 1997 in that dog of an Arrows?

Nico Rosberg's former team-mate Lewis Hamilton has just gone quickest of all with 30 minutes remaining. The Briton is absolutely flying, rattling off a 1:18.858 to go three tenths clear of Valtteri Bottas and seven tenths clear of Daniel Ricciardo, who is currently P3.

Speaking of Nico Rosberg, I saw this on his Instagram page and I enjoy the fact his paddock pass for the British Grand Prix states 'F1 world champion' under category.

I'd be insisting on that tagline everywhere I go if I were Rosser.

  11. Postpublished at 09:58 British Summer Time 28 July 2017

Meanwhile, while his former rivals are on the track, our F1 world champion is apparently indulging in a bit of acting. Intriguing.

Whatever he's up to, surely it can't be as bad as Ed Sheeran's cameo in Game of Thrones.

Hmm, Romain Grosjean, you may remember, ended up with the rear of his Haas in the barrier early in the session. It was a pretty light impact, but there must be a fairly big problem with his car because the Frenchman has not been back out on the track since then.

We've seen Giedo van der Garde's flipflop interpretation of the Halo, but what else does it remind you of?

    Happy to have the halo?

Elias Skaff: I believe #HALO, external is very wrong @fia, external should decide to keep the cockpit open or close it completely anything in between is wrong.

Bethonie Waring: I was all for halo until they decided it would take longer for drivers to get out of the car, which is a more common safety problem.

Valtteri Bottas has fresh super-softs on his Mercedes. He goes quickest of all through the first and second sectors but is much slower through the final sector. He still improves, however, shaving two tenths off his previous best to lower the benchmark to 1:19.2.

  16. Postpublished at 09:47 British Summer Time 28 July 2017

Everyone in the top 10 has done their best time on the super-softs apart from Daniel Ricciardo. The Australian is third quickest, having done a 1:19.920 on softs.

  17. Postpublished at 09:45 British Summer Time 28 July 2017

As Andrew Benson has just said on t'commentary, the halo looks a bit like flipflop, as expertly demonstrated by former F1 driver Giedo van der Garde here...

    Happy to have the halo?

Phazey_le _deer: with the halo announced how will it affect starting grids? it looks like it may block the lights, and maybe some hilly turns

Stoo G: We'll get used to halo, but it seems a step too far... Ultimate safety measure: don't get in the car in the first place
