Jolyon Palmer’s accident at the end of first practice - when he bounced the car over the kerbs at the exit off Turn Four and tore off the front wing and sundry other bits of body work - is not good news. But it could be worse.

Palmer now won’t be able to run this afternoon the new floor, which Nico Hulkenberg found to be a significant improvement at Silverstone and which the Englishman was using for the first time here. But Renault are confident they can repair it in time for Palmer to use it on Saturday.

Jolyon Palmer brought the red flag out in the final few seconds of first practice as he obliterated his front wing when he ran wide at Turn 4.

Race director Charlie Whiting and some of his colleagues are currently inspecting the double kerbs there.

  3. Is F1's new head-protection system an 'overreaction' or essential?published at 12:46 British Summer Time 28 July 2017

Formula 1 is introducing additional cockpit head protection for drivers in 2018 with the 'halo' - and it is fair to say the decision is a long way from universally popular.

Triple world champion Niki Lauda - a man who knows something about risk having survived a fiery accident at the 1976 German Grand Prix - has called it the "wrong" move.

Other leading figures - including 1996 world champion Damon Hill - have also said they disagree with the decision, and fans seem generally opposed as well. So why has it happened and what effect will it have on F1? Read Andrew Benson's analysis here.

    Happy to have the halo?

The introduction of the halo head protection device for 2018 onwards caused plenty of debate throughout first practice, and it's something we've also got a vote running on.

If you haven't already voted you can do so now via the 'vote' tab or by glancing on the right side of this page (desktop users). The vote will close at 14:00 BST.

What on earth do the drivers get up to in the two hours between practice sessions?

Max Verstappen has allowed the cameras in for a cheeky look around his room in the Red Bull motorhome.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo sprung a surprise with fastest time in first practice at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The Australian, whose car has a major aerodynamic update, was 0.234 seconds quicker than Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen.

Title rivals Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel were third and sixth, Hamilton 0.7secs quicker than Vettel and 0.372secs behind Ricciardo.

Hamilton was 0.4secs quicker than team-mate Valtteri Bottas, who was fifth behind the second Red Bull of Max Verstappen, and 0.6secs off Ricciardo, struggling with his set-up.

Daniel Ricciardo smiling? Nothing new to see there, but we could be seeing those pearly white gnashers more than usual this weekend if first practice is a sign of things to come.

The Australian was fastest for Red Bull in first practice, more of the same this afternoon?

    Time to find out.

A promising showing by Red Bull as Daniel Ricciardo ends the session two tenths quicker than Kimi Raikkonen. Lewis Hamilton, third quickest, was three tenths off the Australian's pace.

Early, early days but Ferrari fans will be hoping there's nothing in Sebastian Vettel's pretty average showing. He finished a fairly scrappy session sixth quickest, a second off the pace.

Can Red Bull keep it up for second practice? Will Ferrari improve? We're back at 12:30 BST for build up to FP2, which begins at 13:00 on the dot.

That's a blow for Jolyon Palmer, especially after a promising session. He finished it 10th quickest but may have dealt some amount of damage to the new floor on his Renault, which apparently contributes around two tenths of a second worth of improved pace.

Jolyon Palmer ran wide coming out on Turn 4, flying straight over the unforgiving double kerbs there, smashing off his front wing.

Stoffel Vandoorne had a front row seat for that with the McLaren right behind the Renault and is swiftly on the radio to explain what happened.

The camera cuts to Jolyon Palmer, who is driving around minus the front wing on his Renault.

That brings out the red flag because there's loads of debris on the track and that's the end of the session.

Both the Mercedes are in the pits, so no improvements from them. The Ferraris are out, so might sneak something in with two minutes left.

Romain Grosjean hasn't been completely happy with the Haas - no surprises there - but it's not been the brakes for once. This time it's understeer that's annoying him. He's just been promised a "stronger rear package" for second practice.

Six minutes to go in first practice and it looks like Red Bull are going to finish the session quickest.

Kimi Raikkonen (P2) and Sebastian Vettel (P6) have been in the pits for a bit but are on their outlaps now.

    Happy to have the halo?

Just Mick: Nothing focuses #F1, external minds more than having a bad solution forced on them. Expect to see aeroscreen or shield developed for 2019.

Matthew Taylor: I saw the prototype halo running once trackside and it was barely noticeable. I don't think anyone will care within two races in 2018.

Steve Henderson: Halo Could deflect wheels, wreckage etc into a marshall or vertically downwards on to following driver's head. More thought needed.

Better from Ferrari as Kimi Raikkonen, on super-softs, goes second quickest, rattling off a 1:18.720 to go P2, two tenths off Daniel Ricciardo's benchmark time.
