Nico Hulkenberg goes out on the super-softs. This tyre didn't seem to be doing the business yesterday, with plenty struggling for grip or not even managing to set a faster time than those done on the harder softs.

Kimi Raikkonen missed a massive chunk of second practice yesterday after his Ferrari broke down. He was told to shut everything off after puffs of smoke appeared from the back of his car.

The team replaced all of the engine components overnight and he's out on the track now.

It's all to play for. We saw a lot of pace from Mercedes, particularly from Bottas in first practice, but it was much closer in second practice. Daniel Ricciardo was close, but Ferrari did not really show their hand. I think Sebastian Vettel will be the one to watch in this session.

  8. 'A step forward'published at 10:47 British Summer Time 12 May 2018

Few teams have as much attention on them this weekend as McLaren, who have been talking about this race as a potential chance for them to improve their competitive position, even if in recent days the attempt has been made to keep expectations under control.

Fernando Alonso’s 12th place in final practice was almost certainly unrepresentative - for a start, he did not get a lap in on the super-soft tyres, and set his best time on the mediums; equally team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne was ninth after being the best part of half a second slower in first practice.

Alonso said he felt the team’s dramatic new nose design had made a difference. “It was a step forward,” he said. “There is more performance in the car. I felt more grip. We tested everything, although there is still some debate about whether some of the parts are quicker but we will see tomorrow. Hopefully Q3 for the first time (this season) is a real possibility.”

Plenty of teams have introduced updates for this race, with McLaren's perhaps the most visually clear.

The nose, which reminds me a bit of an elephant's trunk, features three inlets as well as fins either side.

To a man, the drivers struggled on Friday, strong winds and tyres with which few were pleased leading to a tricky day punctuated by spins, off-track moments and the odd crash.

The weather has settled down a bit on Saturday. It’s still warm, but there’s a thin blanket of cloud and the wind has dies right down. Whether that has any effect on the competitive order remains to be seen; as indeed does the competitive order itself.

Picking a favourite from Friday is tricky and overall it seems the top three teams are closely matched. You’d still favour Ferrari to come out on top, if only based on recent form, but it means an unpredictable and exciting day ahead.

Be it because of the conditions or the lack of a dictionary, quite a few things didn't go to plan on Friday.

It meant no-one really showed their hand in first and second practice for the Spanish Grand Prix. That could make for a fascinating day of qualifying ahead.
