Summary

  • Hamilton must wait for title as Raikkonen wins for first time in 5 years

  • Alonso, Ricciardo, Grosjean, Leclerc out

  1. Thanks and goodbyepublished at 22:26 British Summer Time 21 October 2018

From the first lap, to the last, that was absolutely brilliant.

Hope you all enjoyed that race as much as we did. Lewis Hamilton moves closer to winning a fifth world title, but Kimi Raikkonen's first win in five years and Max Verstappen, coming from 18th to second, frustrate Hamilton.

Thank you for all your comments and for joining us.

We move on to Mexico and do it all again next week, when Lewis Hamilton will surely become world champion. Surely.

  2. Bad news for Grosjean, Magnussen and Oconpublished at 22:23 British Summer Time 21 October 2018

Bad day for Haas - Grosjean gets a three-place grid penalty in Mexico for his collision with Leclerc and Magnussen looks set to be disqualified from ninth for using more than the permitted 105kg of fuel.

And Ocon is in trouble for exceeding the fuel mass flow on lap one. Another likely disqualification.

If Magnussen and Ocon are disqualifed then the top 10 would be 1 Raikkonen, 2 Verstappen, 3 Hamilton, 4 Vettel, 5 Bottas, 6 Hulkenberg, 7 Sainz, 8 Perez, 9 Hartley, 10 Ericsson.

Hartley would double his season points tally from two to four if that happens, while Ericsson would get only his seventh point of the year.

Lewis Hamilton just failed to clinch a fifth world title when he finished third in a thrilling US Grand Prix.

Mercedes let a victory slip through their fingers by delaying a second pit stop and Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen took his first victory for more than five years. Hamilton's title rival and Raikkonen's team-mate Sebastian Vettel looked to have handed Hamilton the title early on when he spun battling with Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen also beat Hamilton, who will have to wait until the race in Mexico next weekend to have another chance of clinching the title.

He leaves Austin, Texas, with a 70-point lead over Vettel, who eventually finished fourth, with 75 available over the remaining three grands prix. In a tense finish, Raikkonen, Verstappen and Hamilton were nose to tail and the Mercedes driver failed in his one opportunity to pass the Dutchman with three laps to go.

As it happened, even doing that would not have been enough to clinch the title for Hamilton, as Vettel passed the second Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas for fourth place on the penultimate lap.

  4. 'One more would never have changed my life'published at 22:13 British Summer Time 21 October 2018

Kimi Raikkonen, who hadn't won a race since 2013, says: "The champagne, is no different to last time on the podium... we always come to the weekend to do our best, and if we do our best then we expect to be up there to fight for the win. We did it today I felt confident and it worked out today.

"I never really made such a big thing out of it, I've won races and a championship so it's not like I've never done it, one more would never have changed my life - maybe others would looked at me differently, but it's not everything - it's nice for sure but it's not everything."

  5. 'The Finnish blood is good'published at 22:12 British Summer Time 21 October 2018

Lewis Hamilton speaking to Sky Sports says: "It was epic, really exciting, not where I wanted to finish but I enjoyed the race and getting to be in a battle with these cars and these guys. People watching on TV want to see that more often. With the way these cars are designed we should be closer and have more races like that.

"They've got to do a better job with the design for 2021, so we can get closer together without having extra technology - if they can design something like that in a wind tunnel then that only means we need three-tenths behind to gain an advantage.

"Ferrari were quick and they did a great job today. I'm really happy for Kimi - he gave me a lot of confidence, I won't go to his age, he doesn't look any different since he started, so the Finnish blood is good.

"I wasn't feeling anything in the car today, I was just thinking I've got these two guys ahead of me who just want to win a race and they can take the risk but I can't, I caught the marbles trying to overtake Max and it pulled me out.

[Laughs] "If it's Max on the inside you give a lot of space... he might have been a long way away but I couldn't see him."

  7. 'Seems like Ferrari have found something'published at 22:05 British Summer Time 21 October 2018

Valtteri Bottas finished fifth and says: "I think, for me, it's easy to say afterwards the one-stop didn’t work, and the last five laps were driving until the end and there was nothing I could've done with Sebastian getting through.

"One-stop didn’t work for me. I don’t have the bigger picture so I don't know if there is something we could have done but Red Bull got ahead with Max, so that’s something we could improve on.

"It seems like Ferrari have found something, whether it's old or new, but we didn’t have the first car in the race bit there's lots of things we can take from this race to be on top next week in Mexico."

  8. 'I was struggling with my tyres but it made it more fun'published at 21:59 British Summer Time 21 October 2018

Max Verstappen speaking in the post-race press conference: "I was struggling with my tyres and there was a few corners near the end when I had to closer the door a bit.

"I was on the edge and sliding a lot and Lewis ran out of room and then you get marbles on the tyres and then you need a lap until they have grip again.

"I was struggling in the last 2-3 laps with my tyres, but it made it more fun."

  9. Vettel's poor formpublished at 21:55 British Summer Time 21 October 2018

Sebastian Vettel now needs to be perfect - and hope. Three races left, he has to win all three of them and hope Hamilton's form falls off a cliff.

Vettel's past five race results are now fourth in Italy, third in Singapore, third in Russia, sixth in Japan and fourth in America. Hardly title-winning form.

Raikkonen's win means he is only 55 points behind his team-mate, with 75 still available for one man. Could he even end the year as Ferrari's top man?

  10. Raikkonen wins in Austin, taking his first victory since 2013.published at 21:49 British Summer Time 21 October 2018

  11. Ocon under investigationpublished at 21:45 British Summer Time 21 October 2018

You spend ages sorting out a graphic of how they stand and then instantly find out Esteban Ocon is under investigation, about fuel flow and whether he exceeded limits on the opening lap.

He came eighth, but that may be taken away from him. Brendon Hartley would be the man to benefit if Ocon is thrown out of the top 10, as he would move up from 11th to 10th, while Sergio Perez would go from 10th to ninth and Kevin Magnussen would go from ninth to eighth.

  13. Red Bull's genius...published at 21:31 British Summer Time 21 October 2018

Have to disagree with the official F1 Twitter account there. Not enough credit is going Red Bull's way for dressing up their drivers as cowboys. Genius.

It was all a bit wild west at times, but Verstappen's performance, from 18th to second, deserves a lot more headlines than it will get.

  16. Seventh will do it in Mexicopublished at 21:22 British Summer Time 21 October 2018

The lead for Lewis Hamilton is now 70 points. There are only 75 left available for one driver. That means Hamilton only needs to come seventh in Mexico to win the world title, that is if Sebastian Vettel wins it of course.

If Vettel does not win in Mexico then Hamilton is the champion, even if he crashes on the first lap.

  17. 'This is vintage Max - fair and hard racing'published at 21:21 British Summer Time 21 October 2018

Christian Horner, Red Bull's team principal says: "It's brilliant what a drive from P18! He's been a great man today racing for the lead there, what a drive!

"I knew there was a lot of discussion going on behind, about gaining on Kimi and Hamilton was getting closer and closer and Max was saying “I'm doing it carefully”.

"This is vintage Max - fair and hard racing. Today he’s driven an unbelievable race, he should certainly get your driver of the day if he hasn't already.

"We run a whole bunch of simulations to try and monitor the tyres and everything was telling us the tyres were done with six laps to go, but Max was saying he could manage it. All our tyre models were telling us there’s no way he will get to the end and he just did it and made it work. It was down to the temperature, and the change in pressure."

  18. 'I'm proud of the guys'published at 21:15 British Summer Time 21 October 2018

Maurizio Arrivabene, Ferrari's team principal, says: "I'm proud of them I was always proud of the guys and even more when we are winning races.

"It's been hard, we had a race engineer pass away last weekend... [pause] but I have nothing more to add.

"It was great (today), thank you USA."

  19. 'We put on a good show'published at 21:14 British Summer Time 21 October 2018

Toto Wolff, Mercedes team principal says: "We lacked the pace today, I said don't close it too early they (Ferrari) are very fast. Kimi winning is great for him and Ferrari so let's go to the next race."

"It was difficult to overtake but it was a worse strategy as it progressed, so we need to re-think and see what we could do better.

"We put on a good show all together and that’s what is more important."

  20. 'Should have been a better day'published at 21:13 British Summer Time 21 October 2018

Sebastian Vettel can still win the world title, but you wouldn't think so given his miserable outlook in an interview with Sky Sports. He came fourth after an opening lap spin following a tap with Daniel Ricciardo

Asked for his emotions, he says: "Mixed, happy, really happy for Kimi. I must have been in his (Ricciardo's) blind spot, I'm not sure he saw me. The corner kept tightening and we hit. It was a big loss for me. It should have been a better day."
