  1. 'As good as I could get'published at 20:14 British Summer Time 27 October 2018

Lewis Hamilton will start third, but crucially is ahead of title rival Sebastian Vettel, who starts fourth.

"I'm really happy with it, we had a difficult day yesterday and it was much better today," said Hamilton. "I was not expecting to be up as high as we have done.

"The team did a great job yesterday, this was as good as I could get. I'm happy for Daniel, he did a good job.

"You saw what happened last year with the red car behind (Hamilton suffered a puncture when he was hit by Vettel's Ferrari on the first lap), so it depends how we get away. We will get a good tow from the two in front so hopefully I can gain a position."

  2. 'I knew the pace was there'published at 20:10 British Summer Time 27 October 2018

Daniel Ricciardo, who will start on pole position tomorrow, says: "I knew it was there somewhere. We hadn't had the cleanest run in practice, but I knew putting the lap together was crucial.

"I knew the pace was there, Max showed it all weekend. Once I heard I got pole, I could relax a little. Monaco is the only place I've done this so to do it here, it was very close. It was (a Red Bull) one-two so very cool for the team."

  3. 'The whole qualifying was crap'published at 20:08 British Summer Time 27 October 2018

He's been the fastest man all weekend, but he got pipped by his teammate at the last moment, by 0.026.

Max Verstappen says: "The whole qualifying was crap, we had the same problems as FP2, the engine braking is not like I wanted and rear locking in the car. We tried to make the best of it, I thought we had enough but it's still good to be second."

PhilSlocombe: Lewis always seems to be able to find an extra bit of speed in Qualy. Seb is under huge pressure to get the win so could well make another mistake.

Bob McFeil: I cannot say how glad I am Vandoorne is leaving. Another miserable performance.

    Natalie: THIS IS SOOOOOOOO TENSE!!!!!!!

    Oh yes it is...

It's all down to the hypersofts now... with two minutes left, they're out of the garages on out laps.

  12. Postpublished at 19:57 British Summer Time 27 October 2018

Christian Horner, the Red Bull team boss says: "We’re nailing the laps and this is the business end of it. We try and live each lap comparing the two drivers times, you can see it’s a decent lap but the circuit is getting quicker and quicker so we’re going to have to improve on that to keep him ahead so it's all on this new set of tyres now."

What a lap from Max Verstappen, he was not the fastest in any sector but he just pieced it together, but we have another run for everyone.

  17. 'Showers won't get here in time'published at 19:52 British Summer Time 27 October 2018

    Jennie Gow
BBC Radio 5 live sports extra pit-lane reporter

I don't think we are going to get some rain. We have a lot of cloud cover but the showers are 30km away and will not get here in time.

It is much colder, about eight degrees cooler than yesterday, and that is what Mercedes wanted. For them, this is the answer to all of their dreams.

  18. 'Vettel pole position would be huge for him'published at 19:50 British Summer Time 27 October 2018

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

It is too close to call. It will come down to who can put the corners down (17 corners) on their last lap the best. If you drop a tenth in one corner you can say goodbye to pole position. This is going to be a very exciting Q3 coming up.

Sebastian Vettel getting pole would be huge for him, it would be his first since Germany, which seems a long, long time ago.
