Yet again, we have a Mercedes front row and Lewis Hamilton will be leading the way after a wonderful lap to snatch pole position out of the hands of team-mate and title rival Valtteri Bottas.

Lewis Hamilton snatched Monaco Grand Prix pole position from Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas with his last lap of the session.

Hamilton, often on the back foot in qualifying, took pole by 0.086 seconds.

But the story of the day was in many ways Ferrari's strategic error that saw Charles Leclerc knocked out in the first session.

Ferrari elected not to send Leclerc out for a second run, and the Monegasque will start 16th for his home race.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen was third, ahead of Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, who was the man who knocked out Leclerc.

Mercedes said they wanted to pay a fitting on-track tribute to Niki Lauda. They have a great chance of that as they dominate the front row, aiming for their sixth one-two finish in six races of the 2019 season.

If they do that, it will be the first time an F1 team has had one-two finishes in six successive races.

Sebastian Vettel, who crashed early in the day, starts fourth: "This morning has nothing to do with that (qualifying) so I don't want to shift the blame - I've been many times around here.

"We struggled to get the tyres to work and you don't get the feel you want. the front tyres did not work. We need to dig deeper. For now it is what it is, we need to accept, even if we don't want to."

Capo: Arrivabene isn't the problem of Ferrari after all. The team has a deeper issue as a whole. The way they screwed Leclerc's race up is mind boggling. These mistakes are one to many.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner tells Sky Sports: "Max's (second) out lap got a little bit messy and we can't predict what the others are doing. Third place and fifth here represents decent grids for tomorrow's race.

"In reality we are probably a tenth or two shy. Mercedes are pretty mighty at the moment. Those guys are fighting for the championship, we've got a grandstand seat. To be on the second grid here, Pierre in fifth as well, it's out best qualifying of the year."

Still waiting to hear if Pierre Gasly gets to keep that fifth place for blocking off Romain Grosjean. If he doesn't Kevin Magnussen and Daniel Ricciardo could both be bumped up the grid.

Carlos Sainz has got himself into the top 10, and celebrated with a well-earned ice cream!

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff says: "Shame for Charles, it's his home race and he had it in him to be fighting for front row.

"In the end it came together for us and I'm so happy. Valtteri had a sensational lap one and on lap two I don't know if he hit traffic or it was a bad lap.

"The latest I've heard (for tomorrow) is a 60% chance of rain but it keeps changing."

We are still waiting to hear whether Pierre Gasly gets a penalty for a move that led Romain Grosjean to unleash a furious bout of swearing over team radio.

Ilyas Bulsari: it seems very clear that Ferrari have all their eggs in one basket (Vettel) and seem to forget they have a second driver.

Max Verstappen starts third tomorrow and is quick to praise the Mercedes duo. He says: "Yeah they were a bit quick. My lap in Q2 was quick but I lost it a bit in turn one in my lap on Q3. It was a reasonable lap.

"I didn't do many qualifying here so I am of course happy to be third."
