After the best race of the season, and then a three-hour delay to see if the original result stood, Max Verstappen wins the Austrian Grand Prix.

The race had everything and it was just what the sport needed after a dull day in France a week ago.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen passed Charles Leclerc with two laps remaining to win a thrilling Austrian Grand Prix. The win was only confirmed three hours after the race finished following an investigation into whether Verstappen unfairly ran Leclerc off the track.

Ferrari's Leclerc seemed in control of the race after Verstappen made a bad start to drop from second to seventh. But Red Bull pitted Verstappen 10 laps later than Leclerc and Verstappen fought up from fourth to take the win.

It was a sensational drive from Verstappen, making superb use of fresher tyres than the cars in front of him, but the move with which he took the lead was controversial.

Leclerc had already fought off one pass by Verstappen on the previous lap, when the Red Bull got inside the Ferrari at Turn Three but Leclerc held on around the outside and out-accelerated him up to Turn Four.

But on the next lap, with two to go, Verstappen again dived up the inside, and this time he ran Leclerc off the road on the exit. After both drivers were called before the stewards, the FIA, after lengthy deliberation, confirmed the result would stand.

Sebastian Vettel managed to overtake his rival Lewis Hamilton as Hamilton locked-up into the corner and Vettel took his then-third place.

But Hamilton, who suffered some front wing damage during the race, could only come fifth overall, one place behind Vettel.

The stewards make us wait, but it is Verstappen's first victory of the season and his first since the Mexican Grand Prix last October.

All this is great news as we don't have to tweak these tables. Max Verstappen up to third in the drivers' championship, but Mercedes still running away with the constructors' title.

Jon Bishop: Why is there any debate over if the rules should be applied in F1? All sports need rules, if the rules are broken it’s cheating? If you’d prefer it to be bumper cars (hard racing) then just change the rules accordingly.

No further action on Verstappen/Leclerc. The stewards "did not consider that either driver was wholly or predominantly to blame for the incident. We consider that this is a racing incident".

In case you are just joining us, we are still waiting on the outcome of a stewards' meeting on whether Max Verstappen, who crossed the line first, is going to keep his win at the Austrian Grand Prix.

Verstappen overtook leader Charles Leclerc at Turn Three on the 69th of 71 laps, although the Ferrari man then went wide off the track.

Verstappen says it was hard racing, Leclerc says he was forced off. The Dutchman's winning margin was only three seconds so any time penalty will cost him the victory and give Leclerc his first ever F1 win.
