Nice lap from Max Verstappen, stamped his authority on that third place at least, if you assume the Mercedes of Hamilton and Bottas will go quicker.

He's four tenths up on Ocon, half a second on Albon and then Perez, Kvyat and Gasly all just a little bit behind there.

What of Red Bull this weekend? They struggled on Friday but Max Verstappen sets a new fastest time. Those timings continue to tumble.

Esteban Ocon's lap was quick, much quicker than Renault team-mate Ricciardo, who is down in 10th place.

We've had a lazy start to this FP3 session but now the drivers are getting on with it and times are tumbling. It's really close in that upper midfield.

Bottas leaps back above Hamilton with a lap 0.036 seconds quicker than the world champ. Esteban Ocon is currently third for Renault, who some fancy for a decent run this weekend.

Sebastian Vettel heads back out for another look.

Lewis Hamilton goes straight to the top of the charts with a 1:20.658.

Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc come close to contact and the Briton isn't impressed with the space given to him.

Jezz: Why not send each team out separately. Reverse championship order in Q1, and then reverse order from Q1 for Q2 & Q3. Then it's up to each team to tow in whatever way they want with a similarly paced car. Give them enough time for two fast laps in each session.

How about each car gets a certain no of drs laps for race day maybe an extra lap for each place down the grid would make racing more interesting just need to figure a way of adjusting this for safety car incidents.

There's much more activity out on the track now, the two Ferrari's and Haas' Kevin Magnussen among those out there. Vettel follows Magnussen around the twists and turns, probably close enough for a little benefit. Vettel was third fastest when he crossed the line but he's quickly knocked down the leaderboard and out of the top 10.

Valtteri Bottas jumps right to the top as team-mate Lewis Hamilton comes out.

Daniel Ricciardo had a lap time deleted yesterday at Parabolica - which is going to be another thing to look out for in qualifying, we haven't even spoken about track limits.

Ricciardo v Verstappen is interesting. Chuck in a couple of McLarens and it's going to be a good fight for third place.

Sainz has Monza to himself at the moment and sets a 1:21.875. "You're purple in all sectors," he's sarcastically told over the team radio. Well, yes...

Westy #44: Why don’t the teams stager the cars out so the car on the hot lap can get a tow by the car on his out lap and then give the tow to the car on his in lap? Need coordination but doable.

Dances with Wombles: Why not send a special F1-spec pace car out in Q3 to allow people to get a slipstream without anyone having to go first?

Not ideal to say the least. The other McLaren, Carlos Sainz, heads out on the medium tyre.

Just listening across some of the team radios, Lando Norris went out, his pre-launch revs were really high, so he got told to come in - McLaren are aware of the situation but after his power unit issues yesterday, that doesn't sound like the greatest of news.

Pierre Gasly was also told to box, his rear-left temperatures were running a little too high.

Looking forward to Q2 as the drivers put their best effort for grid. Q3 will be embarrassing. But hope not.

In F3 this morning, 9 drivers got penalties for going so slowly and trying to get the tow. Something like that today?

The two Alfa Romeos - Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi - return to the pits after their opening laps.

There's a lot of chat about the towing we saw yesterday. We'll likely see similar today.

  15. 'Verstappen under pressure'published at 11:09 British Summer Time 5 September 2020

This is as much pressure as Max Verstappen has had, I think, for third place.

He hasn't always qualified in third but he's always been racing in the top three. This time, Daniel Ricciardo in the Renault is looking strong and this track seems to suit them even more.

Verstappen may be under pressure for that third place this weekend.
