Crikey! That is really dangerous. Lewis Hamilton comes flying down the straight but there are two cars ahead that have slowed right down before the turn. Hamilton has to whip across onto the grass to avoid plowing into the back of them.

Time is up. These will be the last laps.

Red Bull's Alex Albon is rapid in the first section before slowing down and ultimately having his time deleted again.

Carlos Sainz sets a time good enough for second. Pacey!

It's pretty congested on the track. Pretty much everyone is going to try and set one last time in the session.

Because Ricciardo has got a new power unit this weekend, he's taken his allocation already.

So, if they have to do a replacement and take it from the new allocation, that means Ricciardo would get a penalty.

We're back under way again. Lewis Hamilton is among those heading back out. There are two and a half minutes left.

So there are no cars on the track with five minutes to go.

As it stands, Valtteri Bottas is top of the standings with Lando Norris second, the now worried Daniel Ricciardo third and Lewis Hamilton fourth.

There are some worried faces in the Renault garage. There's not going to be much time to sort out this problem with Ricciardo's car before qualifying.

And with Ricciardo's car parked in a dangerous position, the red flags are out. The session is stopped.

I thought Daniel Ricciardo's car sounded a little bit rattly as he came across the line.

Monza looks more like a busy country lane now. There's plenty of traffic out there.

Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo go second and third fastest, ahead of Hamilton.

But what has happened here?! Ricciardo has pulled over and parked up at the side of the track. He's got a problem.

Hamilton's response is a bit scruffy. He sets a time 0.350 seconds slower than Bottas. It may be the Finn who finishes this session on top. 13 minutes to go.

Fastest lap of the weekend for Bottas, a tenth quicker than Hamilton managed in FP2 yesterday. Mercedes aren't bothered about a slipstream right now, though.

A Mercedes is back on top of the leaderboard again. You didn't expect anything else did you? Valterri Bottas goes fastest. What can Hamilton muster? A couple of wobbles mean he is unlikely to challenge his team-mate here.

  17. Vettel's pop at Pirellipublished at 11:43 British Summer Time 5 September 2020

Ferrari will certainly not be repeating the home pole position Charles Leclerc achieved last year. The car was off the pace on Friday - and a right handful to boot, especially on high fuel. Leclerc rescued a moment at the first Lesmo late in the second session, getting away with running wide. But Sebastian Vettel was not so fortunate a few minutes earlier and he spun, brushing the wall with his rear wing, fortunately without damage to the car. It was not a happy camp on Friday evening.

“The car is difficult to drive,” Vettel said, “but it's not the first time. So where are we lacking? I think we're losing down the straights, which is expected. We are lacking grip on corner entry with pretty much all four wheels. The car is sliding quite a lot. And it's a handful. But yeah, it's very difficult to get everything right to get the lap together. But we're trying to make it a bit better.”

Vettel could not resist a pop at Pirelli, for the high minimum pressures they have been mandating for years now to make the tyres less prone to failing - and which have been raised again after the problems at Silverstone.

"Part of a contributor for that [challenge] in the race is obviously the balloon pressures that we are forced to run at,” he said. "That doesn't help. It's far away from where I think the tyres would like to run. But yeah, we have to obviously stick to the rules and apart from that, it will be a tricky one in the race.”

We're into a quieter period now. The two Mercedes come out, looking to stamp their marker on proceedings.

Bottas and Hamilton are absolutely not after a tow. They're a long way apart.

Simon Baker: Will there be a possibility of Raikkonen's average speed record for qualifying, dating back to 2018 being broken this weekend?

Why don't they just send each car out separately so no one gets a tow and each car has two slots to itself to set a lap?

Alex Albon, pushing the car and its grip a fair bit, has a lap time deleted for exceeding the track limits at Turn 11.

Ferrari's Mattia Binotto tells Sky Sports that he hopes qualifying later won't quite be a hectic as last year. We shall see! I won't hold my breath.
