The shadows are getting as long as a John Daly drive now at Augusta National. With many of the main names already surfing the channels back in their hotel rooms, the on-course photographers are turning their attention to the surroundings rather than than the protagonists.

The missed opportunities are racking up for Lee Westwood. His birdie putt refuses to head south on 16 and the Worksop native could be right up there with the likes of Bubba Watson had more of those been drained. He stays on level par.

  3. Donald finishes +7published at 23:53 British Summer Time 10 April 2014

More bad news for Luke Donald. The Englishman signed for a six on the par-four ninth but was later handed a two-shot penalty for touching the sand with his club before playing a bunker shot, making it a four-over-par eight.

Donald played his third shot from the greenside bunker, leaving the ball in the sand. Prior to making his next shot, he touched the ground with his club, prompting a two-stroke penalty. A bogey on the 18th means Donald signs for a seven-over-par 79. Ouch.

Lee Westwood takes par from 15. He will feel a little short-changed after a sweet teeshot and a punchy approach.

  5. B Watson finishes -3published at 23:47 British Summer Time 10 April 2014

Bubba Watson taps in his final putt to finish on three under - courtesy of a round of 15 pars and three birdies. That is solid work.

After flying the 15th green with his second shot, Lee Westwood's chip back onto the dancefloor threatens briefly to take a dip. Just enough hold on it, but his heavy hands around the greens might cost him this weekend.

Bubba Watson lines up a big-dipper of a birdie putt from the lower tier of the 18th green and makes a decent fist of it. The length is just about spot on and missing to the left, leaves him with the easier, less risky uphill route to a par finish.

Ernie Els has been into all the nooks and crannies of the course today, but he holes a jittery ten-footer to take par on par-three 16 to stay on two over overall.

Justin Rose misses his birdie putt at 16, meanwhile Lee Westwood goes through the back of the green with his second on the par-five 15th.

Bubba Watson, second shot on the par-four 18th, thumps it out of the front of a sand-trap the size of the Sahara desert. It briefly looks like he is going to climb up onto the top deck of the green, but his ball doesn't make it up the slope.

Two-time champion Ben Crenshaw is not the back marker any longer by the way. South African Branden Grace, who finished 18th last year, is unlikely to do so this time around after a 12-over opening round 84.

  15. Mickelson out to +4published at 23:28 British Summer Time 10 April 2014

Phil Mickelson is mired down at four over as his bogey attempt trails miserably wide as he registers the second seven of his round at 15.

Bubba Watson waggling his big pink stick on the last. The crowd whoop as soon as he connects with the ball, but that one is beach bound, trickling into the far bunker. The 18th is tricksy little madam.

  17. Postpublished at 23:24 British Summer Time 10 April 2014

Phil Mickelson opts to play it safe on 15, laying up with his second. But the plan backfires. He trims too much off his yardage and see his shot roll back off the green and into the crystal-clear depths. He'll have another a crack at that, dropping back on his line and pinging up to within ten feet. He will have a bogey putt next.
