  3. Leishman shares the leadpublished at 15:48 British Summer Time 11 April 2014

Australian Marc Leishman has taken a share of the lead. The world number 69, who began the day two under, has birdied the opening two holes to join overnight leader Bill Haas on four under. Leishman, a huge man, finished in a tie for fourth a year ago, so he knows his way around the azaleas. What is it about Aussies at the Masters right now?

  4. Oosthuizen drops anotherpublished at 15:45 British Summer Time 11 April 2014

It has not started well for Louis Oosthuizen, who began the day only one shot off the lead. The South African has bogeyed the par-four seventh to drop another shot, sending him falling back to one under. We do however, have a change at the very top of the leaderboard...

As a postscript to Sandy Lyle's memories of his 1988 victory, the great Scot told me about what happened after the winning putt disappeared from view on the 18th, including his impromptu jig.

"It was absolute elation," he said. "I thought I'd lost it earlier in the round and I wanted it so badly. The pressure feeling in my shoulders started to drain. I think the little dance was going to be a somersault but I had no legs left.

"I ate with the members about 8pm and there were eight or nine TV crews waiting for me so it was non-stop and my feet never touched the ground.

"My parents were here and Dad said, 'If I die now I'll die a very happy man'. I got away about 10pm and went back to the hotel, which had been pretty noisy all week with its own bar and disco. This was my chance to go and celebrate. But there was nobody there. Everyone had left. I didn't really celebrate until I met some of the caddies and press guys the following week at Hilton Head. It was a little bit of an anti-climax."

    Par four, 350 yards

Short, but treacherous. Bunkers on the left of the fairway lead to most players using an iron off the tee. The small, sloping green is not entirely visible from the approach.

Sergio Garcia (whom your humble live text commentator stumped up some of his hard-earned cash to back), dropped a shot at the first and has parred the second. He's three over. In the same group, Bubba Watson, all long legs, pink driver and mullet, is still three under. They are heading to the third.

One man who we can safely say will not be with us at the weekend is American Michael McCoy.

The 51-year-old amateur, the second-oldest debutant in Masters history, has carded two double bogeys today to fall back to 14 over par and prop up the rest of the field.

McCoy, an insurance executive from Iowa, earned a place at the Masters by winning the US Mid-Amateur Championship. His caddie is his son Nate.

Phil Mickelson will be next on the tee at 15:30, alongside Ernie Els and Justin Rose.

ESPN's Justin Ray, external points out that in Mickelson's first 79 rounds at the Masters, he made 76 or worse on four occasions. In his last four rounds, he has made 76 or worse in three of his last four rounds.

Mickelson's 76 matches his worst career opening round Masters score. On the only other occasion he scored 76 (in 1997), he missed the cut.

  13. Birdie for Donald at the firstpublished at 15:17 British Summer Time 11 April 2014

Bubba Watson is off with a par at the first, while his playing partner Luke Donald - seven over after round one - has opened with a birdie. Stephen Gallacher has immediately surrendered the shot he gained at the sixth by bogeying the seventh. He's back to level par.

Things are not going well for Garrick Porteous, the English amateur who will turn pro after this Masters debut. He carded a 76 yesterday and had dropped a further shot by the time he got to the par-four seventh. A triple bogey there has left him at eight over and looking unlikely to see the weekend.

  18. Golfing disasterspublished at 15:03 British Summer Time 11 April 2014

Jimmy Hart: When I was 15 I decided to practise some chipping on the front lawn. I put a bucket in the middle of the lawn and chipped at it. After 15 minutes or so I was through with simple chips and reasoned that I needed to practise a few Mickleson-esque flop shots.

Not really knowing what to do I opened up the stance, lay the blade of my nine iron almost flat to the floor and started trying to get under the ball.

After mixed success I decided what I needed was more power... Accelerating into the ball with considerable gusto I thinned one which went off like a crazed banana straight through the recently re-glazed (rugby ball incident) sitting room window, spattering my startled mother with shards of glass before 'careering' (her words) into TV thus rendering it obsolete. Pretty calamitous shot all in all.

  19. Oosthuizen bogey - back to two underpublished at 15:00 British Summer Time 11 April 2014

Now then, a blunder from King Louie sees Oosthuizen tumble away from leader Bill Haas. The South African has let one slip at the par-three fourth and slides down to two under, two behind Haas. Bubba Watson and Adam Scott are now the only men on three under.

Been watching Bubba Watson launch balls to the moon with that pink-shafted driver decked in white go-faster stripes. His body recoils violently after each one, front leg spinning out as the light sabre wraps around his ears. Worlds apart from the effortless Ernie Els next to him. Silk with a stick.

Phil Mickelson, under serious pressure to stave off a first missed cut since 1997, keeps coach Butch Harmon and caddie Bones waiting for at least 25 minutes.

And get ready for Sergio Garcia's azalea strides (in colour, not made out of actual azaleas). Spectacular.
