Lee Westwood with a decent two-putt at 14 takes par and heads to the par-five 15th. Shots to be gained there. Bubba Watson at five under - there are 17 players within five shots of him. This is boiling up to be an absolute humdinger.

  3. Watson bogey at seven (-5)published at 21:26 British Summer Time 12 April 2014

Oh Bubba Watson, yet another shot goes begging. He gave it every chance, a wonderful effort from the edge of the green, but gravity wouldn't pull it in as it peered over the edge of the hole. Three bogeys in four holes see Watson slide back to five over, with a lead of only one shot. Only two of the last 12 second-round leaders have gone on to wear the Green Jacket on Sunday evening.

    Paul Azinger
Former United States Ryder Cup captain on BBC TV

"It's a lot easier to sleep on the lead than wake up on it. That's an eyelash away from rolling 20 feet off the green."

Jordan Spieth, Jonas Blixt and Thomas Bjorn all remain four under, two behind Watson. What can Bubba do from the sand at the back of the seventh green? He'll need something out of his bag of tricks to keep this on the carpet. Puff of sand, sprinting past the hole, will it hold on? Just. Beastly par putt to come, though. Watson, head dropped, has eyes staring miles away. He doesn't look quite right.

Is it unravelling for Bubba Watson? Seventh fairway, three golden bunkers protecting the front of the green like Swiss Guards. To avoid them, Bubba goes long and is in the sand at the back. If you thought this was going to be a Bubba march to glory, think again. Game is definitely on.

    Par four, 450 yards

The tee shot towards an uphill-sloping fairway is usually aimed towards the left-centre for a more level lie. From there, it may only need a short iron, but the small green is surrounded by five bunkers.

Ian Poulter kicked off the British challenge for a first green jacket since Nick Faldo in 1996 by storming out of the blocks, though the natty dresser faltered on the back nine to card a two-under 70 and sit on level par. Justin Rose, helped out by a colossal stroke of luck at 15 (see 20:36) and then a superb birdie putt, was at -1 through 17 holes as the 2013 US Open Champion seeks to land his second major.

English warhorse Lee Westwood was putting together another solid Augusta performance at -2 through 13, the former world number one hunting a maiden major title.

There was not such good news for the less-favoured pair of Jamie Donaldson (Wales) and Stephen Gallacher, the former +2 through 10 with the Scot +3 (9) as the many vagaries of playing Augusta began to catch up with them.

  12. Watson bogey at 6 (-6)published at 21:12 British Summer Time 12 April 2014

Yep, another frittered away by the leader. He's got to come back uphill from about 12 feet on six. Decent effort, but past on the right. That's a first three-putt in 47 holes and his third bogey in six holes today. Back to six under, the lead - that was four shots not long ago - is down to two. Momentum changing?

  13. Postpublished at 21:09 British Summer Time 12 April 2014

Bubba has got a monster on six. He has to send it miles wide of the hole at the deadest of dead weights. Pace gathering, ball not turning, it will be a very tricky third back up the slope for par. Another shot set to be dropped? Speaking of drops, Matt Kuchar to two under from three under at 11.

  14. Postpublished at 21:07 British Summer Time 12 April 2014

Ian Poulter, who finished with a third round of 70, speaking on BBC TV: "I am raging yet again. I made 70 on Friday and Saturday so it is not a true reflection of how I played today. I am disgusted with how I finished. I couldn't see myself making any mistakes.

"I am still in a position to have a run at the guys tomorrow but I should have been a lot closer. We will have to see what Bubba does out there."

I'd go for ribs with a fork. Don't like eating eating with my hands. While I'm at it, I keep ketchup in the cupboard. It should never be in the fridge.

Anyway, Justin Rose has dropped a shot at 17 and Ian Poulter is off his long run...

Bubba on the tee at the par-three sixth. Pin at the left, the leader goes way right, into a different post code. It's on the dance floor, but on an elevated level (like one of the nightclubs with a few rooms). Tricky.

    Par three, 180 yards

From an elevated tee that is one of the highest points on the course, players hit over spectators to a two-tiered green. Pin position here is very important - in 1970, 17 successive players three-putted on this hole.
