"We have young ones, middle aged ones, old ones and a dearly beloved one. It is virtually impossible to pick a winner. I am looking forward to it and to see how young Jordan Spieth does.

"If you are a good looking woman at 56, age is only a number, nobody says that when you are 20. It is only a matter of inexperience or fear as to why you can't win. If he can control his mind and attempt the right thing at the right time, anything can happen, we shall see."

  2. Most major appearances without a victorypublished at 17:44 British Summer Time 13 April 2014

England's Lee Westwood (-2), with 63 major appearances but no victory, tops the list of those in the Masters 2014 field. Next is Miguel Angel Jimenez (-3), who has played in 62 while American Steve Stricker (+2) has been to 60.

Westwood has eight top-3 finishes in majors, most for anyone in modern history without a win says ESPN's Justin Ray., external

Thomas Bjorn (-2) and KJ Choi, who started the day at +7 but has moved to +6 through 10 holes, have played in 51 majors.

Spain's Sergio Garcia, who missed the cut, has played in 61 majors and came within a whisker of clinching the 2007 Open.

There's movement out there for Australian Steven Bowditch. He started the day four over but has eagled the second and birdied the third to move only one over.

Mize, the man who chipped in to win the Green Jacket, has just holed from the bunker at the back of the 11th green - my boss said he would have been "very unhappy" had a mention of this not made the live text.

As Stephen Gallacher plays his second shot from the 11th fairway, my boss interjects again, only this time with a golden nugget.

He points to the fluttering flag atop of the pin, which is blowing straight towards the water on the left of the green. Danger.

Jeff Knox, the Augusta member playing as a marker for Larry Mize, has put his 12th tee shot to the back of the green, just on the fringe.

Last night, Rory McIlroy said that no one knows the Augusta greens better than Knox.

I'm starting a campaign to get Knox in next year's field.

Still not much of great consequence to report from out on the course. Vijay Singh is one of four men out there on four over par, nine shots off the pace.

Larry Mize, the 1987 champion, continues to prop the rest up on 14 over par.

Mize is officially playing alone but, as we learned on Saturday, single players are given the company of marker Jeff Knox. Knox, an Augusta member, outscored Rory McIlroy yesterday.

    Rob Hodgetts
    BBC Sport at Augusta National

The Sunday roars at Augusta are legendary but none more so than when Jack Nicklaus won in 1986. The sound that day was "quadrophonic" according to Sandy Lyle, who was playing alongside the 46-year-old Nicklaus.

"The noise level was unbelievable. It was coming from everywhere, above, from the side - I think even God was laughing. It made your hair stand up on end, especially when he made an eagle on the 15th and then nearly holed it on the 16th. It gives me goose bumps just thinking about it. It was the most incredible thing."

John Howard: Really hoping for a great Westwood round. Just off the lead and ready to move. I fancy him in a play-off victory.

  12. Sean Foley on Justin Rosepublished at 17:12 British Summer Time 13 April 2014

Tiger Woods' swing coach Sean Foley on Justin Rose, another of his pupils, in with a chance of a first Masters win today: "I'd say this week his skill sets have been 7.5/10 but his attitude 9.5. That's ultimately the goal, when you can maintain that mindset for 72 holes.

"Justin's always going to be there. He was +6 standing on the 14th tee at Merion. He always keeps plugging on, it doesn't matter how good you are whether you are Tiger Woods or Jack Nicklaus, you're always going to run into a problematic stretch."

Rose won his first major in last year's US Open at Merion, a breakthrough moment for the man who went pro after finishing T-4th in the 1998 Open and then missed his first 21 cuts.

Rose, four behind the leaders, was +6 after 12 holes of round one at this year's Masters.

Spieth has actually just made his way on the range, nice and early, just as he did yesterday before shooting a two-under 70 to put himself at the top of the leaderboard.

He waves to the crowd in acknowledgement of the warm applause, then gets a sturdy handshake from Rory McIlroy, who offers some words of encouragement.

Spieth, wearing a pale green shirt that I'm not should would look too good under the bottle Green Jacket, begins working on his putting, which he did for an hour yesterday.

    And what about Jordan Spieth?

You're 20 years old, playing in the Masters for the first time and you'll be going out in Sunday's final group. Nervous? Not a bit of it.

"It is about seeing how I can control my game and emotions out on the golf course against guys that have won here recently," he said.

"It doesn't necessarily mean, I don't think, that they have an advantage in any way. I'm very confident in the way things are going, and really looking forward to seeing how I can perform on a Sunday."

  16. Postpublished at 17:02 British Summer Time 13 April 2014

But, ultimately, what the we and the experts think counts for little. It will be down to the men at the top of that leaderboard.

Does Bubba Watson, the champion two years ago, have an advantage because he's been there, done it and got the Jacket?

"We are all going to be nervous," said the big leftie. "We all know what it means to our career, for our status to move forward in the game. It's going to be tough for everybody, not just guys that have never won one."

Former United States Ryder Cup captain on BBC TV

"If you really get down to the brass tacks of it all, a golf swing takes about a second and a half. If you shoot 70, that is little more than a minute and a half of actual motion. The rest of it is just thought. Six full minutes in four days. It can make your head explode."
