It has been a tricky nine holes for Australia's Jason Day...

Two birdies and a bogey, not to mention a par via the very thick stuff with no shoes early in his round. Tied for second, one shot back.

  2. Donaldson clubhouse leader on -8published at 22:08 British Summer Time 9 August 2014

Hello! Thanks JJ, this is Ben Dirs. No, seriously. McIlroy gets up and down at nine to save par and stay joint leader. Ilonen birdies 10 to move to nine under, Wales' Jamie Donaldson birdies 18 for a 66 and grabs the clubhouse lead on eight under par.

Better outcome for Jason Day, who has the luxury of not being stood in the sand as he addresses his second shot. The Australian finds the middle of the green and that means he can walk up the fairway with his putter in hand.

Hold on, here comes the charge from Rickie Fowler. On 10, he has a right to left putt from 15 foot which enters through the sidedoor for another birdie. That moves him to 10 under - and a share of the lead.

Colin Montgomerie, one of the first out today, reckons the Valhalla course was "almost unplayable" earlier. Not so now.

Jason Day and Rory McIlroy stick their tee shots on nine left, the pair are side by side in the rough, just short of a bunker. Wee Mac's feet are buried in the golden stuff and his second shot flies out the thicker stuff to fly 15 yards past the green.

Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano:, external Course was gettable today, unfortunately couldn't take advantage of the conditions. 5 birdies & 1 eagle for +1 says it all!

The Spaniard is even par after round three.

Rory, Rory, Rory. McIlroy gives hope to us all - including his rivals - by duffing his chip with a second shot that lacked conviction. We've all been there, Rory.

Can Jason Day take advantage? No. His putt up the slope falls short and settles for a par three. But then he is given the advantage by McIlroy who drops his first shot of the day. The Northern Irishman goes to 10 under, which is still a shot clear of Messrs Day, Fowler and Palmer.

Rory McIlroy appears confident as he watches his ball spin through the Kentucky air from the eighth tee. Looking good. And then...plop. It turns out he's an inch short on the left fringe.

Jason Day takes a three-quarter eight iron which drops left of the flag, pin high, and clings on to the slope for dear life.

Oh Jim. He's not been at the business end of a Major for a long time, and Jim Furyk won't be there tomorrow if he misses any more two-foot putts. Yes, that's right. The American spoons one and drops a shot on the par-three eighth.

Ah. That was the kiss of death. Jason Day doesn't read the slight left to right and must settle for a par five. But his effort tips a wink to Rory McIlroy, who solidly strikes into the heart of the tin cup. Two-shot lead for the world number one, who stands 11 under.

American Ryan Palmer moves within a shot of the lead with a birdie at seventh, then plonks a nine iron off the tee at the short eighth within striking distance of a two.

Back on seven, Rory McIlroy chips to about five foot for a birdie, before Jason Day almost follows suit from the bunker. Same line of putt, just a foot or two further back. Expect a pair of birdies...

Spare a thought for the best golfers on the planet: the mud on the ball in the wet conditions is causing them problems.

"You don't want a clot of mud on the ball, that makes it go off line," says BBC Radio 5 Live commentator Jay Townsend.

The good news? Phil Mickelson says it's a sandy kind of mud, so it's not as bad as it looks.

Well that's that then. You can all rest easy.

Rory McIlroy and Jason Day are almost side by side on the seventh fairway. An intimidating approach awaits - a 230-plus carry over the wet stuff - and both men are a bit sloppy, pushing their second shots to the right of the dancefloor. Both have work to do get up and down for a birdie - particularly Day, who is eating sand.

"Get in the hooooole!" Is there a more annoying shout/chant in the world of sport? I think not. Anyway...they greet Rickie Fowler's tee shot on the par-three eight and, to be fair, it isn't a million miles away. Good chance of a two, but then the American pushes the birdie putt down the right channel.

Nothing is dropping for Phil Mickelson. Another birdie putt goes begging on the par-three nine for the American. Playing partner Bernd Wiesberger is given a clue about the line from Lefty, but he can't hit the target either. Pars all round.

Craig from Ringwood: Playing a 170 yard par 3 from the white tees with a colleague from work, he topped his first shot and hit the yellow tee box sending his ball straight back past us and a further 100 yards away from the green turning the hole into a par 4 with 1 stroke down!

  18. Outright lead for McIlroypublished at 21:26 British Summer Time 9 August 2014

Jason Day winces as his attempt to save a par fails badly. He pulls it left and drops a shot to leave McIlroy standing out on his own at the top of the leaderboard. Wee Mac remains 10 under after six.

Another day's work done for Adam Scott, he finishes with a 66 after a birdie on the last. Last year's Masters winner is three back from Rory McIlroy and Jason Day.

Back to the sixth, where Day knocks his third on to the front of the green, rolling up about 10 foot short. McIlroy, meanwhile, is one revolution of his ball away from dropping in his birdie putt. Close - but not close enough.

    Jay Townsend
Former European Tour golfer on BBC Radio 5 live

"Jason Day I felt was McIlroy's biggest challenge today. But he's been squirrely off the tee, squirrels don't run in a straight line. Day's got to hit it in the fairway. He's laid up with an iron at six, he's going to struggle to reach the green in two."
