  1. Team Europe as it standspublished at 17:46 British Summer Time 9 August 2014

But some players - namely Rory McIlroy - have no such concerns. The Northern Irishman knows that - barring injury - he will be pulling on a Ryder Cup sweater at Gleneagles next month. Here are the nine men who are currently in qualifying spots for Team Europe...

European points list: Rory McIlroy, Victor Dubuisson, Sergio Garcia, Henrik Stenson.

World points list: Justin Rose, Martin Kaymer, Thomas Bjorn, Graeme McDowell, Jamie Donaldson.

Three captain's picks will be added to complete the 12 players set for Gleneagles.

  2. One eye on the Ryder Cuppublished at 17:42 British Summer Time 9 August 2014

Another interesting sub-plot to proceedings at Valhalla is the race for the Ryder Cup. These final two slugs could prove pivotal in nabbing a place on either Team Europe or USA for next month's lip-licking event and Europe captain Paul McGinley is not looking for just experience in his three captain's picks.

"I would pick a rookie," says McGinley on Sky Sports. "If he pushes and shows very good form. They are used to playing in this arena and I wouldn't discount picking one if they put their foot forward for the line."

McGinley says he expects to pick his three players from a shortlist of six or seven. Nine other players qualify through points scoring systems.

Hang on, there's another Englishman attempting a more successful comeback than Gary Barlow. Yorkshireman Danny Willett has found the groove, birdieing the second and third before, yep you've guessed it, grabbing an eagle at the driveable fourth. He's four under after five and within striking distance of the leaders.

Leaders: -9 McIlroy (NI); -8 Day (Aus), Furyk (US); -7 Palmer (US), Fowler (US), Ilonen (Fin); -6 Mickelson (US), Wiesberger (Aut); -5 Willett (Eng), Koepka (US)

Justin Rose grimaces, threatens to smash his putter into the 15th green, then walks off muttering something possibly unrepeatable. The Englishman drops his first shot today - and he drops about 10 places down the leaderboard. He's four under for the day, four under for the tournament and five shots behind Rory McIlroy.

And we have just seen a pair of twos at the fourth in the past 10 minutes or so.

Local boy Kenny Perry, 53, picked up a two to move to -3 and then Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano nearly drilled his tee shot into the pin. The Spaniard then drained his putt to go to -2.

2013 Masters champion Adam Scott (-3), who is one under after the opening two holes, is relishing the wet conditions. "I've got to get it in closer and take advantage of the pin positions. The course is even softer again today," says the smooth-swinging Australian.

That's because the US PGA Championship organisers have brought the tee forward on the par-four fourth hole to put the green in range at 292 yards - music to the ears of the entire field as they seek to catch overnight leader Rory McIlroy (-9) on 'moving day'. Which is known as that, by the way, because of the traditionally 'easier' pin positions to enable low scoring.

Four-times major champion Ernie Els (-2) says if you're in rainy Kentucky, stick a chair down at the fourth green. "That's a hole that's going to be a spectator beauty today. A lot of guys are going to try and make a two there," he tells Sky Sports.

All of us golfers have been there. Standing on the tee of a short four par 4, eyeing up a sun-hardened fairway, thinking 'if I can give this a good wallop then I can drive the green'. Then, you get more hook than New Order's bass player and you end up with a blob on your card. Not these lot at Valhalla...

Like any professional golfer needing a caddie, a live text commentator needs a confidente, a sounding board, someone they trust to offer their opinion. That, my friends, is where you come in.

Is Rory a dead cert to be strolling up that 18th fairway tomorrow as US PGA champion? Or has Jason Day caught that bouquet enough and ready to step forward from his seemingly-perennial role as the bridesmaid? Or are you tipping someone else in the pack to emerge?

While those lot go through their final pre-round preparations - chipping drills, concentration exercises, chocolate fix, whatever - those who are way down the leaderboard are already out on the Kentucky course.

One of the early movers on what is traditionally known as, er, 'moving day', is England's Justin Rose. Last year's US Open winner is marking those birdies down on his card - five to be exact - after 14 to climb into the top 10.

Wee Mac will no doubt be thumping a few balls on the practice ground right now as he prepares to walk on to the first tee at 20:00 BST. Standing alongside him will be Australia's nearly man Jason Day, who is a shot further back on eight under.

American veteran Jim Furyk, the man with the circular swing, is level with Day, while Rickie Fowler is back in the mixer, sitting a further shot behind that pair.

Well, I say one more man, but you would be a brave person to bet that it won't be someone else. That's because Rory McIlroy - the world number one and three-time Major winner - is hogging the top of the leaderboard like Elvis Presley hogged the top of the pop charts.

The Northern Irishman holds a one-shot lead at the halfway stage at Valhalla and it's now or never for the rest of the field. Welcome to day three of the US PGA Championship.
