I wouldn't want to be Jason Day right now. He is tucked on a downslope way out left, but somehow manages to rescue the situation, thumping one out of the rough to about 40 yards short of the sixth green. Decent.

No such trouble for Rory McIlroy. He goes for raw power from the middle of the fairway, carrying over 200 yards to plonk himself right into the heart of the green. Another birdie chance.

Phil Mickelson strides up to an eagle putt on the seventh. The Valhalla crowd roar it into the cup, but the American - remarkably - leaves it short. But his birdie is a formality and he moves to eight under.

Former European Tour golfer on BBC Radio 5 live

"Rory's putted well this week, not exceptional. If he gets on a run with the putter he could spread eagle the field today. He's hitting the ball that well."

Jason Day continues to have the honour, taking an iron off the tee on the dogleg sixth. He goes well left as the punters go ducking for cover. Big bother. Rory McIlroy takes a small wood which he spanks down the middle.

Rory McIlroy drops to his haunches, eyeing up a birdie putt on 5. Not too much break, he trundles it towards the right lip, bingo - it drops for birdie. He waves to the applauding crowd, a little hint of a smile. He moves into the outright lead at 10 under, where he is joined by playing partner Jason Day moments later. The Aussie sinks his birdie putt before striding off confidently to the sixth tee.

Rory McIlroy managed to save par on the fourth - but it was a missed opportunity for the Northern Irishman. Seven eagles have been holed on the shortened 292-yarder today. This is how it compares with the 18th, the easiest hole at Valhalla over the last two and half days...

Thanks Ben. What a start! There are 17 players within three shots of lead - what do you mean you're heading out for the night? Don't you dare look away. Lee Westwood nicks one back on nine, wiping out his faux pas on the hole before.

Day chucks the kitchen sink at one off the tee at five, finds the first cut. McIlroy bombs one down the middle. Here's Jonathan Jurejko for an hour or so...

Shot gone for Westwood at eight, he drops to -6; Scott bends in a 20-footer for par at 16, he stays -6; Ryan Palmer moves to within one of the lead with a birdie at five - it's all going off out there.

  11. Furyk, Day & McIlroy lead on -9published at 20:55 British Summer Time 9 August 2014

McIlroy did, indeed, have to take a drop at the fourth and left himself with a 10-footer for par. Day, meanwhile, has to make do with a birdie after failing to hit his eagle attempt, although the Aussie does join Furyk atop the leaderboard on nine under. Great save by McIlroy, that was gutsy...

Paul Azinger says 14-times major winner Tiger Woods is a shadow of his former self.

"He has gone from the artist to the engineer," former PGA Championship winner Azinger said while commentating as a television analyst for Golf Channel.

Woods missed only his fourth cut in a major as a pro on Friday after struggling to a second-round 74 for six over overall.

"It is difficult to watch a Vincent Van Gogh paint by numbers. We want to see Tiger come back and get all of this stuff out of his head," added Azinger.

"The golf swing takes a second and a half. What is running through his head in a second and a half that has caused him to lose face and path awareness?

"Something is happening in the strongest and greatest mind that golf has ever known that is different, and he has got to fix it. It is not just physical."

Danny Willett, who is back in the clubhouse after a five-under 66, on Sky Sports: "My back has not been feeling great and I've not hit it fantastically - but we scored phenomenally. We were trying to hit it into scoring areas and not making silly mistakes, that's what we did. I chipped and putted my way around."

No mistakes from Day at four, he's right into the guts of the green. If he makes that eagle putt from about 12 feet, he'll take the outright lead. Westwood for birdie on eight, doesn't hit it, stays seven under.

  15. Furyk & McIlroy joint leaders, -9published at 20:46 British Summer Time 9 August 2014

Ernie Els is cutting it up down the back nine, birdies at 10, 14 and 15 and he's four off the lead. Furyk joins McIlroy atop the leaderboard on nine under - and he could soon be outright leader, Rory has just plonked his drive into some drink on four. We think...

Day just misses with his birdie attempt at three but what a bunker escape this is from Furyk at four, he'll have a tap-in to join McIlroy in the lead. Palmer with a miraculous recovery, he should also make birdie. McIlroy also missed his birdie putt at three, he and Day move to the eminently albatross-able fourth...

  17. Postpublished at 20:40 British Summer Time 9 August 2014

Danny Willett at 18 and the Sheffield man rolls in a six-footer for par for a round of 66 and six under for the week. Willett, 26, finished 40th on his US PGA debut last year but should trump that at Valhalla.

  18. Postpublished at 20:38 British Summer Time 9 August 2014

McIlroy at the 188-yard, par-three third. Probably going with putter. Actually, it's seven iron, and it's a peach, chance of a birdie. Mickelson on five and that's another up-and-down for par. Day at three, arrow straight, sets up a putting contest with McIlroy...

Ryan Palmer is still right in the shake-up but that's a horror show off the tee at the easy fourth, a straight hook into a whole world of nonsense. Guess what? Day made par at the second after playing his second shot with no shoes on - as did Rory, who didn't remove his shoes once. That's golf.
