Here's Fowler with his second at one... poor shot, misses the green with a wedge from the middle of the fairway. Mickelson whip-cracks his drive down the second, that's a doozy. Sweden's Henrik Stenson, one of the stoniest wits on tour, birdied the first and is six under. Willett makes par at 15, stays six under.

Rickie Fowler rifles one down the first fairway, here's Phil up ahead on the green, leaving his birdie putt just left. Willett did indeed drop a shot on 14, he falls to six under. Great comeback, all over the pin with his second at 15. Westwood sticks his tee shot at four to within about six feet of the hole - nailed on eagle...

  3. Garcia cards 66, -5published at 19:39 British Summer Time 9 August 2014

Danny Willett with an iffy long putt at 14 and he's got his work cut out to save par. Garcia pops in for birdie at 18 and that's a round of 66 for the Spaniard, he's four off the lead on five under. Handy, but whatever Rory does today, Garcia will probably need another similar score tomorrow to even be part of the conversation.

  5. Can Rickie land a major?published at 19:34 British Summer Time 9 August 2014

Rickie Fowler has been speaking ahead of his 19:40 BST tee time: "I got to watch a little it of coverage this morning and it seems there are chances out there to be had. I want to stick to the process and have a bit of fun out there.

"I want to take the past experiences from majors and know how comfortable I felt in those positions. I can take confidence from those majors. I feel confident here at Valhalla and am in a great position for the weekend."

Brendon de Jonge of Zimbabwe is moving through the field, he's three under through 10 and five under overall. We have on tee Phil Mickelson. I believe that was a barely strangled cry of 'Mashed potatoes' from what was presumably a young child behind the ropes and that denotes that his drive was straight and true. Left is out with Austria's Bernd Wiesberger... safely away again...

Austrian Bernd Wiesberger is six under and tees off with Phil Mickelson today at 19:30 BST: "It's a nice treat to play with him. But I'm even more excited about the situation I'm in, being close to the lead.

"I hope I can at least try to do the same things I did the first two days, stay happy out there and go around with a smile.

"I've put a lot of time into my putting practice and so far it has paid off well. I have studied the greens and can read them well and stroke them well so I'm feeling confident about my putting right now."

Former world number one Luke Donald carded a 68 today, his lowest round of the week. The Englishman is three under and six off the current lead. Westwood hacking from off the side of a ridge and to within a couple of feet of the second green, good recovery. Willett nails a longun on 13, he's now two off the lead; Mahan pops in for a birdie at 15, he moves to six under. They're massing on Rory's shoulder...

Relationships break-ups are never easy (unless didn't really like each other much in the first place and were only in it to fill some time) - especially if your love-life is under public gaze. But Rory McIlroy says golf is now his "life" after his well-publicised split with tennis player Caroline Wozniacki.

McIlroy ended his engagement to Wozniacki in May, then won the Open in July and the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational last week. "I just immersed myself in my game. I've practised hard and I'm reaping the rewards," says the 25-year-old.

Hunter Mahan showing some form, he's just rolled in a birdie on 14 to get to five under. Scott's makeable birdie putt stays right at 10, he stays five under. Garcia makes a 12-foot par saver disappear on 17 to remain -4, pumps his fist, still in the mix. Just.

A receptive golf course yes, but Valhalla has some teeth to spoil the birdie party we are seeing at the moment.

Second hole - A whopping 500 yards and a par four. Even the big hitters have a job on their hands to not give one back here. Only 11 birdies were carded in the opening two rounds. Vicious.

Sixth hole - A 495-yard par four, only one birdie so far on Saturday and players don't like this one. The stretch has taken an average of 4.4 strokes.

Brandt Snedeker is having a real see-saw round - the American was two over after six but has picked up six birdies since to be five under. Westwood of England at the first and he's right over the top of the flag, albeit quite a few feet past.

  16. Birdie me or you've failedpublished at 19:05 British Summer Time 9 August 2014

This course is giving up chances aplenty, but where are they?

Hole four - Par four averaging just 3.25 strokes in round three. It has already given up six eagles and 31 birdies in round three. That's more than a fifth of all the birdies on the course today.

Hole 18 - Par five at 542 yards is getting hacked up and averaging just 4.35 strokes. Just one of the 89 bogeys today on the final drag.

Many thanks Jonathan, I am Ben Dirs. For a couple of hours. A word about Spain's Sergio Garcia, runner up to Rory McIlroy in his last two events - he's five under through 15 and five under overall. There's a really low score out there today, of that there's no doubt. Garcia drops a shot at 16...
