The spot to land it on at the par-three fourth is about the size of a biscuit tin but Spieth managed it there.

Both Spieth and Reed missed birdie chances however and Bjorn halved in three.

Poulter's birdie putt from distance on three is a few feet short. but McIlroy gets up and down from the bunker well to hole well for par. Good recovery from the Irishman.

Walker's putt to win the hole is short and Fowler rams his past. A good half for Europe.

The longest par three and protected by a little bunker short right and one to the left of the green.

Poulter from the rough on three again finds the green with his second. A putt for birdie from distance but should be a safe par. The pointy-cap-wearing Fowler is much closer to the flag with a pin-high approach 10 feet to the left. Walker follows his partner to within 10 feet of the flag to leave the Americans with two good birdie chances.

Rory McIlroy walks away from his second with slumped shoulders after finding sand with a horrible approach.

Poulter and McIlroy made six straight birdies on the back nine in Saturday's afternoon fourball match two years ago to famously help Europe, trailing 10-4 at one point, head into the singles on Sunday 10-6 down and give them hope of retaining the trophy. Europe went on to win 14.5-13.5 in one of the most thrilling comebacks seen in the competition.

Today Thomas (Bjorn) looks a different player. He was missing greens yesterday and not helping his partner.

Thomas Bjorn birdies three with a brilliant 20-foot putt. Martin Kaymer points to the Dane. 'He is the man'. Massive roar from the crowd reverberates around Gleneagles. Spieth misses his putt to halve.

"The first day's a bit different, the jitters are there on the first tee. When you arrive on the second day you can play more aggressively as you've played the course before. So we're going to have a good morning's golf. The course is going to play a little easier."

How did that stay out? Poulter's eagle shot on two hits the edge of the second hole before coming back out. Mclroy almost holes from the sand with his third.

Walker makes a testing birdie putt though to halve the hole. Good save from the American.
