"Justin hasn't put a foot wrong. He's playing with real ease here. This is like watching heavyweights trading blows."

What a ding-donger this is at the top of the scoreboard.

Justin Rose sinks another whopper, Matt Kuchar has already done something similar and both pairs are seven under through 11.

    Suffocatingly good golf.

  4. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowlerpublished at 10:33 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

    Europe up

Are we back on script? Rory McIlroy puts away a longish birdie putt on eight and after a torrid first day in which he had to scrap for a half, he has put himself and Ian Poulter one up.

More like what we are expecting from the world number one.

  5. Donaldson & Westwood v Furyk & Mahanpublished at 10:31 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

Lee Westwood gets his toes sandy and enjoys his trip to the beach, chipping close. Jim Furyk and Hunter Mahan have been in electric form though, the latter draining a long-range putt, closing the door and preserving a three-hole lead.

  6. Rose & Stenson v Watson & Kucharpublished at 10:27 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

Justin Rose's second on 11. And it is an absolute pearler. Two hops, up on the green and it settles within five feet.

He is leaving scorch marks on the Gleneagles fairways he is so hot at the moment

Fifteen points!? And it was seven two years before that. And 12 in 1963. A brutal era for the British team. No wonder they called in reinforcements.

  8. McIlroy & Poulter v Fowler & Walkerpublished at 10:22 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

    Bernard Gallacher
Three-time European Ryder Cup captain on BBC Radio 5 live

This is when the tactics go wrong. I'm not sure about this, I think Ian Poulter should have putted first there.

Poulter missed a birdie chance from 30 feet having asked McIlroy to go first from six feet, which the world number one missed. Both Americans missed their birdie putts too to remain all square.

  9. Bjorn & Kaymer v Reed & Spiethpublished at 10:22 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed's frat-boy outing to Scotland is still going pretty swimmingly. The American rookies are more than holding their own. Spieth taps in on eight to keep it all square.

    BBC Sport at Gleneagles

"The sun-bathed banks to the left of the ninth are taking on the look of a festival field. Flags of Europe, Ireland and USA sprout up on long poles held above the massed ranks, attention focused now on the green as the first group does its thing on the dance floor before exiting stage left. Time for a chat and then, like the dust of a stagecoach thundering through the west, the next group and its entourage pour down the hill from our right.

"Bursting the bubble slightly is the main road cutting through the landscape between us and the hills and glens across the valley. "

    Tom Fordyce
    Chief sports writer at Gleneagles

"So lively is it around the McIlroy/Poulter ding-dong that there are kids hanging out of the trees for a superior vantage around the arboreal stretch from six to eight. Adjustment in applauding technique to single hand slapped against thigh necessary to prevent plunge from bough to bracken."

Doff your caps. Justin Rose is weaving magic out there.

Another putt from the fringes, and this one sinks for a birdie on the par-three 10. The gallery roar in delight, Rose accepts with a raised fist.

Suddenly Bubba Watson and Matt Kuchar, from sitting pretty, are suddenly wobbling. Watson with a copper-bottomed clutch putt salvages the American challenge and they march off all square.

  13. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowlerpublished at 10:16 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

Rory McIlroy can't find the putt to compliment the approach, nuzzling, but not sealing the deal from six feet or so.

Ian Poulter's putt is a far dicier chance and also stays north.

Which means that Rickie Fowler has a putt from further out than Rory, but closer in than Poults to win the hole.

Nope, the American's putter runs cold again and we are even stephens off seven.

The golf, in terms of competitiveness, in terms of atmosphere, has ratcheted up. What a setting.

  15. Rose & Stenson v Watson & Kucharpublished at 10:13 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

Justin Rose has a eagle putt from the apron to try and win the ninth for Europe. It has to cross chasms and mountains, but almost finds its way, fading just wide. Hole halved.

  16. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowlerpublished at 10:10 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

Jimmy Walker has found a fairway bunker on seven, but makes a good escape up onto the green. Rickie Fowler bashes his appoach a little closer.

Over to you Europe. Rory McIlroy with a nice angle into the green. He likes it, the gallery likes it, I'm quite keen as well. The ball bites on landing to leave him with a five foot putt back up the slope for birdie.

An elevated tee shot plays into a valley, with a big dogleg right. The green slopes from right-to-left, making it difficult for the approach shot to hold.

  18. Donaldson & Westwood v Furyk & Mahanpublished at 10:07 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

Hunter Mahan slips his shades upwards and gets his terminator-eyes out to read a putt on on eight. Calculations done he slides it home from 10 feet.

Rookie Jamie Donaldson has looked at home in all his matches so far though and stays solid over a testy little five-footer to halve the hole.

He and Lee Westwood still have three holes to find though...

  19. Postpublished at 10:04 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

All square in three of the matches, the Americans leading on eight though. Jamie Donaldson is trying to make inroads into their three-hole lead with a gutsy approach.

Justin Rose has uncorked an absolute fizzer on nine to put his ball on the green and him and Henrik Stenson in control on nine. That was out of the sickliest of sweet spots.

Thomas has got an incredible wedge game. Anything within 100 yards he's always going to give himself a chance and I called that one. Eight or nine times out of ten he holes those.
