European captain Paul McGinley on Sky Sports: "We've a little bit of an issue with Henrik at the moment. He's got a tight back after playing so much golf so we're monitoring him for this afternoon."

  2. Donaldson & Westwood v Furyk & Mahanpublished at 08:44 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

    USA up

Hot stuff from the Americans. Three birdies in the first three holes see them race into an early lead. Furyk this time this shot maker.

  3. Rose & Stenson v Watson & Kucharpublished at 08:43 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

Stenson should be safe for birdie after a fine bunker shot on four. Watson, from the same trap, is equally good from the sand and lands to within millimetres of Stenson.

Kuchar's long birdie putt fails to trouble the hole, leaving Rose with a chance to win the hole. A downhill putt from right to left never looks like making its target though.

    Alistair Bruce-Ball
BBC Radio 5 live commentator at Gleneagles

"It's a real ding-dong battle this one. Bubba Watson finally rolls in a birdie putt for USA, his body language has been much better today although Kuchar's been doing most of the work."

  10. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowlerpublished at 08:34 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

    Europe up

Just the start McIlroy and Poulter are looking for after a difficult day yesterday. Poulter's birdie putt is conceded while Walker and Fowler's attempts are missed.

  11. Rose & Stenson v Watson & Kucharpublished at 08:32 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

    USA up

Watson birdies the third from about six feet to win the hole and put the Americans back ahead.

  12. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowlerpublished at 08:31 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

Poulter looks up for this. A sensational approach from the rough is almost stone dead on the first for birdie. McIlroy finds the bunker but that is pretty irrelevant considering his partner's shot.

Rickie Fowler looks as though he is following Poulter's shot into the pin, only for it to spin away after landing a couple of feet from the hole. Walker also on the green but some way away.

  14. Donaldson & Westwood v Furyk & Mahanpublished at 08:26 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

Mahan's eagle putt from distance falls a few feet short and, with Westwood in for birdie, the hole is halved.

From an elevated tee shot, this hole, with a dogleg left, is protected on the left of the green by bunkers and a pond. Reachable in two but behind the green is a deep hollow.

  16. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowlerpublished at 08:24 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

Ian Poulter nods his head and gives the singing crowds a knowing smile on the first tee. He will have a point to prove after sitting out yesterday's foursomes.

The Americans are well away down the fairway. Poulter is in the rough on the left, with playing partner McIlroy just in the thick stuff on the right. All ok though.

    All matches are now underway.

  17. Bjorn & Kaymer v Reed & Spiethpublished at 08:20 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

Easy does it. Kaymer holes from a few feet on the first for birdie after Bjorn and Spieth miss their putts.

  18. Postpublished at 08:17 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

    BBC Radio 5 live

PGA of America president Ted Bishop: "We weren't down at all. We just knew we had to be ready to go out and play today and we're up already. It's a great start.

"Those decisions yesterday were made based on the practice rounds and neither one of Jordan or Patrick drove the ball well then."

Patrick Reed has just started his fourball match by copying Webb Simpson's poor opening tee shot, barely making the fairway.

  19. Bjorn & Kaymer v Reed & Spiethpublished at 08:16 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

Patrick Reed really did have a shocker off the first. He was almost 100 yards back from the rest and was never making the green.

Brilliant from Kaymer as he lands very close to the pin with his approach, after both Bjorn and Spieth also find the green for birdie chances.

Bubba Watson of the United States talks to Matt KucharImage source, Getty Images

Kuchar and Watson miss birdie chances on the second. Rose makes them pay by sinking from six feet to win the hole. All square. A fist clench from Justin there.
