  1. Spieth in troublepublished at 14:18

    Spieth (-5 after 16)

Jordan Spieth with an approach from the middle of the fairway on 17 but, as have many today, he finds the bunker. The American was missing a club with that shot as it lands a long way from the green before rolling into the sand. He could do with a bit of Sergio Garcia magic here...

Oh yes, the crowd like that one. The showman, Miguel Angel Jimenez, chips from a hollow off the green on five and rolls it into the hole. The cheers are met with a wave from the Spaniard. He moves to one under with that eagle.

  5. Ryder Cup hero Donaldson ready to rollpublished at 14:13

    Donaldson, Bradley (14:23 BST)

BBC Sport's Ged Scott at St Andrews:  "Welshman Jamie Donaldson was a hero on his last trip to Scotland 10 months ago when he knocked his five iron stiff at Gleneagles to close out victory for Europe against the USA.

"Keegan Bradley was the man he beat that day in the final afternoon singles. And they are reunited in an afternoon threeball made up by Japan’s Yota Ikeda.

"Macclesfield-based Donaldson, 39, will be playing in only his fifth Open and looking to improve on his previous best – a tie for 32nd at Muirfield two years ago."

    Garcia (-3 after 16)

Sergio Garcia will take that... In the sand just off the green on 17, the Spaniard bends his knees and digs the ball out of the well-like bunker to within three or four yards of the hole. Bravo Sergio, bravo.

  11. Emotional Tompublished at 14:01 British Summer Time 16 July 2015

    Tom Watson (+4)

“My emotions are bitter sweet. The final walk at the Old Course, it’s on my mind. Too many sixes on the back nine ruined my day. I had a little bit of brilliance in the middle of the round but not at the end. The fans and the crowds are extremely nice and it’s been a special day. I know the wind is going to blow tomorrow so it would be fun to do something special.”

  12. Carter's things you need to knowpublished at 14:00

    1. The elusive Grand slam

    Quote Message

Aside from Jordan Spieth, Arnold Palmer is the only other player to arrive at St Andrews having won the Masters and US Open in the same year. Palmer loved to talk up the notion of completing a "Grand Slam" of majors and in 1960 came desperately close to taking the third leg at the Old Course. He was within a stroke of forcing a play-off against the eventual champion Kel Nagle of Australia.

"Call him the $25 Million Man—at the very least," writes Golf Digest on Jordan Spieth.

"That's the new base for his yearly off-course income. That, combined with his on-course winnings, could jump Spieth from No. 16 this year on the Golf Digest 50 all-encompassing money list to as high as No. 3 in the 2016 ranking, trailing only Woods and Phil Mickelson."

Spieth is rolling in the green as well us putting on one. Marketing experts say the 21-year-old's likeability and long future in the game of golf make him the perfect sportsman to endorse.

  15. Struggles for leaderspublished at 13:55

Joint leader  Dustin Johnson putting up the slope on 16.... leaves it short and that won't be easy for par... Sergio Garcia is in trouble on 17 as he finds the roadside bunker... Jordan Spieth frustrated as he misses from about six foot for birdie.

    Kinnear (-6 after 12)

So, so, close for amateur Paul Kinnear. The Englishman rattles a 15-footer towards the hole for birdie only to see it ghost past the side of the hole. Easy par though as he stays on six under in tied third.

  18. Child causes delay on 15thpublished at 13:47

There is a big delay on the 15th, which has been caused by a child picking up JB Holmes' ball.

The American's playing partners played through while Holmes waited for a ruling on where the ball should be dropped.

It took half an hour to get that ruling, causing quite a backlog.

An Englishman amateur on the Open leaderboard? Paul Kinnear? Never heard of him? You have now.

The 21-year-old Liverpudlian is pitched among the big boys after swapping his football boots for golf spikes. Former Tranmere Rovers youth player Kinnear shot a one-over-par 73 in the Regional Qualifier at West Lancashire, reaching St Andrews with a birdie on the first hole of a three-man play-off for two places at The Open.

That led to a few tears of joy. There will be a few more if wins the Silver Medal - or, gulp, the Claret Jug.
