  1. Wind one, Mickelson and gang nilpublished at 16:54

Bogey, par, bogey has thwarted the Phil Mickelson charge and his latest wedge into the green perhaps underlines the difficulty these players are now facing. The wind is on top of this group and 'Lefty', Henrik Stenson and Matt Kuchar are all left with huge putts for birdie on nine.

    Rose with back-to-back birdie chance

Justin Rose taps in a straightforward birdie on seven, will he follow Phil Mickelson and under club at the eighth - a par three into the wind. Woosh... five feet for birdie again. Have some of that.

Scotland's Marc Warren continues to prosper, a long and wonderfully judged birdie on 14 gives him five under. Geoff Ogilvy is bouncing along, he must feel 10 feet tall. But what's this? Bogey on 13 takes him back to five under.

    Willett (-5 after 13)

Brilliant approach by Danny Willett as he reads the contours of the large 13th green to leave himself a very makeable birdie putt. Put this in and he moves to five under. He makes it.

  4. The wind is coming out to playpublished at 16:42

St Andrews - a picture of beauty. Beware, it's teeth are coming out.

As this wind picks up, you wonder if Justin Rose, Phil Mickelson and other big names on the course will take what they have now. Their back nine could be morbid.

Mickelson has six feet for par on eight, Henrik Stenson similar.

  5. That's ugly!published at 16:38

The wind Phil Parkin alludes to has just kippered Phil Mickelson and Henrik Stenson on the par-three eighth. You guys need to club up as the stiff breeze stops the ball from making the dance floor. They are both 20 feet short and in the horrible rough stuff.

Zach Johnson can tie the lead here but it's a long range birdie effort and it will drop will it... no. That was very close. Stays at six under.

Is this a third birdie in the row for Matt Kuchar? Food and drink for him from that range on the seventh.

    Ogilvy (-5 after 11)

Australia's Geoff Ogilvy is going along nicely with a birdie on 10 to take him to five under.

He was tied fifth on The Old Course back in 2005 but in 11 Open appearances he has never broken 70 in the first round. Chance to change that.

  10. Faldo struggles continuepublished at 16:28

Left-to-right, from 12 feet for Justin Rose, here comes the swing... it's in is it? No. He gave it half an inch too much on his read and it slopes past, par only on six so he stays at three under.

What now for Nick Faldo?  it's just four feet for par but it's four feet too far and in a burgundy jumper, he is now three over. Not the fairytale final Open so far.

  12. Birdie chancespublished at 16:25

Rickie Fowler is in the wispy shot on the par-four sixth, it's a chip and run but his line is mildly off and though a chance, it's all of 15 feet for what would be his first birdie of the day.

Zach Johnson is playing at the 13th green with a fairway wood and this one is a proper crack. Swish, he holds his position on follow through and glares, "c'mon baby", he says. It's good, a monster shot, a huge carry and a birdie chance.

    Stenson and Kuchar progress

As Phil Mickelson exits the sixth with a bogey, his playing partners Henrik Stenson and Matt Kuchar both down six-to-eight footers for birdie. Kuchar is one under, Stenson two under.

    3. The Old but new course

    Quote Message

The Old Course shows several architectural changes since the last time it staged the Open in 2010. Five times champion Peter Thomson said it was "like a bad dream" when he heard of the alterations and Ian Poulter branded them "insane." In truth, you will do well to spot them they have been subtly installed. The eleventh green is less severe providing for more options for pin positions and the famous Road Hole bunker has been widened and is more likely to gobble up errant approaches.

kaboom. Rickie Fowler explodes one down the sixth fairway and perhaps without the same vigour, Nick Faldo also finds the middle of the landing space. Crackerjack drives.

Phil Mickelson has around 30 feet for par after his fun in the bush, it's left-to-right all day but he doesn't get the read quite right and that will leave four feet for par.

  18. Lost balls, found balls, birdie balls?published at 16:12

It turns out they were not looking for Zach Johnson's ball but Tommy Fleetwood's instead. Johnson instead has a birdie putt to share the lead.

Henrik Stenson is one under now and taking aim at the sixth pin, four feet left for another.

    Birdie for Rose - 3

Justin Rose whips his putter back, a lovely arc, sends a ball down the slope on the fifth and that should be a tap in for birdie. Phil Mickelson is still looking in the tree for his ball, this well 100% be a penalty stroke and halt his momentum.

"Guys would you mind going to the other side of the path," asks his caddy. When words like that are spoken, you know it's trouble.

What about Rickie Fowler for birdie  from four feet? Nope. That was rancid. Stays level par.
