    Gallacher (-2 after 4)

Perhaps inspired by Paul Lawrie's opening round 66, fellow Scot Stephen Gallacher starts with two birdies on the first four holes. It is bunching up at the top of the field.

  2. Ways to watch The Openpublished at 15:06

These supporters, clearly tired of trekking around the St. Andrews course, have found a new way to watch it...beanbags and the big screen!

Tiger Woods hung in there. He is a long way down the leaderboard but grafted away. He's battled bravely on the back nine after a poor start.

  4. Satisfied Spiethpublished at 15:05 British Summer Time 16 July 2015

“Fortunately this morning the wind wasn’t blowing too hard and the most important part was finding the fairway which everyone in our group managed to do.

"The game plan was to get into position after round one and that’s what we’ve done. It’s a team event and I’m surrounded by the best team in the world. I understand what is at stake and I think it's premature talking about a slam. I can start talking about that if I win this.

“I’ve always dreamed of playing the Open here as it’s so iconic, so for my first round to go the way it has is great.”

  5. All over for Tigerpublished at 15:04

    Woods (+4 after 18)

Tiger Woods' misery is over. Handshakes made, the obligatory raising of the cap and a rueful smile. He will be glad to be out of there.

He made just one birdie and five bogeys to finish on four over. His worst round on the Old Course at The Open as a pro.

Still think you can win it Tiger?

  6. Mixed bag for big-name triopublished at 15:02

Rose -1, Fowler level, Faldo +1 (after 1)

A man of Justin Rose's capability - Major winner and regular fixture inside the world's top 10 - doesn't miss tiddlers for a birdie. Does he? Nope. Routine stuff for the Englishman, who starts with a bang. Rickie Fowler comfortably walks off the first with a par, but Sir Nick Faldo already has a blob on his card. That's the definition of a mixed bag.

Louis Oosthuizen finishes in style as he rolls home from 10 feet to birdie the 18th and move to five under.

No birdie for Jason Day but he will be more than happy with a final-hole par to finish on six under. The pack are gathering behind leader Dustin Johnson...

Mr Wonderful: Some first round for Dustin Johnston. What more could you want on a day off than the golf on the TV?

Tim Crowther: Good to see Ken Brown playing bunker shots like a 24 handicapper. Hope for us all.

Alexander Williamson: Jimenez holing out then sliding his putter into its invisible scabbard = genius.

  10. Make his Day...published at 14:56

    Day (-6 after 17)

Jason Day is quietly getting about his business but his progress could be halted on 18 as his approach is just short and rolls down the slope and off the green. Up and down needed for par for the American as his chances of taking the joint lead look gone... unless he chips in of course.

    Rose, Faldo, Fowler under way

Oooh, Nick Faldo - sorry, Sir Nick Faldo - looks a little anxious after thinning his second shot. So does our cameraman - he can't even pick up the two-time Open winner's ball on the 375-yard first. Justin Rose plonks his ball within a wooden ruler's length of the pin.

    How bad do you dress?

We are asking for a glimpse into your golfing wardrobe. How good/bad/questionable is your attire?

Thanks for this one Jack. If you aren't playing in a team event then the matching polos are grim. Great trouser play by both of you. Good stance too.

    Rose, Faldo, Fowler under way

How about this for a three-ball. Rickie Fowler. Justin Rose. AND Sir Nick Faldo. Rose, trying to replace the knighted one as the last Englishman to lift the Claret Jug, effortlessly slaps a mid-iron down the middle of the first hole. Faldo looks slightly creakier, but achieves the same result. The more-elasticated Fowler, the junior member of this three-era trio, whips his effort into the same plot of land - as known as Position A.

  14. Westwood unhappy with delaypublished at 14:52

    L Westwood (-1 71)

Lee Westwood says the delay on the 15th made him "stiffen" up.

He said: "It was a bit of a shame, I cooled down and stiffened up a bit and bogeyed the last three holes.

"It was a strange thing to happen, we should have been able to play through.

"I accept it can be slow but I can't believe a ruling took that long. If you can't get a quick ruling at the home of golf, where can you get one?"

  15. Holmes on 15th delaypublished at 14:52

    JB Holmes (+1 73)

American JB Holmes has explained the delay on the 15th where a young spectator picked up his ball.

Holmes had hit his tee shot into a gorse bush and a child picked it up. The American then had a debate about whether he should have had a free drop, but the official disagreed.

He ended with a double bogey.

"They said someone picked up the ball and put it back where it was. I don't know if it was placed in the correct place or a different spot in the gorse. It was an unfortunate thing to happen, but I have to get past it and look forward to tomorrow.

"We had a difference of opinion, I felt like I was entitled to relief, so I asked for a another opinion. It is what it is, I am not a rules official, he may have been spot on but I felt I got a bad ruling. I will look it up later."

    Nick Faldo

Three-time winner Nick Faldo, who is preparing to play in his last ever Open, speaking to BBC Two: "It's hard when you fall out of TV tower and pretend to be a golfer again! The goal is to make the cut here, you either find it easy or it becomes really tough.

"It's my last appearance because I'm old! I'm 58 on Saturday so that's the end of my run. This is the last walk at St Andrews which is pretty cool."

  18. Spieth's bid for the treblepublished at 14:48

Jordan Spieth will hope his attempt to win a third Major of the season doesn't go the same way as Inbee Park's experience on The Old Course two years ago.

She had won the first three women's Majors of 2013 and got off to a great start in St Andrews, but then struggled in the wind. They say the wind is on its way tomorrow...

A real changing of the guard moment as Spieth and Woods passed each other on adjacent fairways - Woods, who started with more press in tow, had lost most of them to Spieth by the fag end of another ragged round. There's only so much you can write about the fall of a great champion.
