    Spieth (-8)

I thought Spieth was supposed to be a decent putter? He's just missed that uphill, near 50-footer. Amateur. Only joking! Somebody has got to bring this lad down a peg or two....no-one at Augusta is managing to.

    Hang on...he's unravelling...

    Spieth (-8), Casey (-2)

Any signs of Spieth cracking? If you call slightly undercooking his approach to the par-four fifth cracking, then yes. A tricky-looking 49-footer - uphill - for the leader to move six clear. If anyone can...

Casey's ball nestles next to his playing partner's. Not a bad idea that Paul...

  3. Bogey for McIlroypublished at 19:25 British Summer Time 8 April 2016

    McIlroy (level after 11)

The 11th claims McIlroy just as it has so many others. Despite a super drive he comes up short of the dancefloor and ends up with around 10ft for par. It slides through and so it's a tap-in bogey. Anyone see any momentum for any player (Spieth aside) out there?

  5. Woosnam in his prime...published at 19:20

While we are talking about Woosnam, we stumbled across this picture of him and Sam Torrance playing what looks like a very serious game of pool. We just likes the image, particularly the shirt game on show. That's major-winning shirt game Sam.

Our back markers provide a sad but somewhat romantic contrast.

While Spieth, McIlroy and the big hitters go at it, the scrap at the ugly end of the leaderboard sees veteran and 1991 champion Ian Woosnam on 19 over, two shots better off than 16-year-old debutant Paul Chaplet.

Both men will perhaps be glad to be in the clubhouse but what an experience Chaplet has had. The Costa Rican will dream of one day emulating what one of Wales' finest sportsmen produced 25 years ago.

Jordan Spieth is unstoppable!! Would like to see Rose or Sergio win. Sergio is the best player never to win a major.

    Rose (-2 after 1), Casey (-2 after 4)

Not many of the field are in the red today. Apart from Jordan Spieth and Scott Piercy. Justin Rose is the latest hopeful to go into the black, bogeying the first.

Five fellas are sticking together on two under now, including Paul Casey who also bogeys the fourth, just behind Danny Lee and Piercy.

Spieth, safely finding the middle of the fifth fairway, is five shots clear....

  9. Lee wobbles...published at 19:15 British Summer Time 8 April 2016

    Lee (-3 after 17), Z Johnson (+2 after 6)

While Spieth stays solid there are wobbles all around him.

Danny Lee the latest, some sloppy putting on 17 sees him dribble a short par putt wide and he's back to three under.

Can anyone else emerge? Open champion Zach Johnson drops a shot on six - two over.

    Spieth (-8)

Back to the fourth green...Jordan Spieth is standing over that 94-footer. Snaking contours slither all over the surface between him and the pin. Anywhere within 15 feet would be solid, anywhere within 10 feet sensational. The Man With The Golden Putter caresses his ball to four. Par holed, great save.

  11. Mr Muscle...published at 19:10 British Summer Time 8 April 2016

    McIlroy (-1 after 10)

Rory just lashed a drive 315 yards on 11. That's how you treat the hardest hole on the course. Another 200 to go. Does he have the accuracy to match the boom he packs?

    Wood, Willett (-1)

England's Chris Wood has just disappeared off the leaderboard, a bogey on the par-four seventh grabs him by the scruff of the neck and hoiks him away. Compatriot Danny Willett, after five straight pars up to 13, nips in at his expense. Both men are one under.

And it goes from bad to worse for Casey on the fourth. He's eating sand from the tee, while playing partner Spieth finds the dancefloor. Well, I say the dancefloor...he's in the nightclub down the round from the pin. If he nails this 94-foot (?!) putt then the bar is closing and we're all being ushered out of Augusta by security. Night over.

    Casey (-3)

Whatever Spieth can do...Casey can't. The Englishman finds the front of the third green, leaving a monster of an uphill, left-to-right putt. One, two, three...he's back to three under.

  19. Par for Rory...published at 18:59 British Summer Time 8 April 2016

    McIlroy (-1 after 10)

Rory McIlroy needs to go some to make a dent in this Jordan Spieth lead and with the devilish 11th hole up next, needs to at least leave 10 with par.

Shot three on this par four comes from off the green, a gentle chip...nicely done to six feet. Come on then Rory, get it done...bingo. The ball is underground.

Off you trot to the hardest hole on the course.

  20. Can Rose get it right?published at 18:57 British Summer Time 8 April 2016

    Rose (-3)

    Justin Rose

It was a picture-perfect moment. England's first major winner since 1996 arrived when Justin Rose sealed the US Open in 2013.

But has he kicked on? A couple of PGA Tour wins in three years, a couple on the European Tour and of course second place here last year.

Is it enough? Rose is driven and will probably tell you no. Day one has given him a chance to right things this time around though. He hit 83% of his greens in regulation and had the ball under a pretty consistent spell throughout.
