Poulter (level), Watson (+8), Grace (+9)

Not much cheer in group eight today. In fact, an Aston Villa supporters' group meeting is probably feeling more positive vibes. Ian Poulter is muttering under his breath after almost each shot - he's three over for the day, sloping back down the leaderboard. Bubba Watson is five over today, with Branden Grace trailing Augusta by six. Someone crack a joke to lighten the mood.

  2. Birdie for Jordan Spiethpublished at 18:10

The man is a machine, he really is. Check under his skin for metal and a CPU. A 14-footer for birdie at the first, rolled in to go to seven under par. Jordan Spieth restores his lead to three strokes, the rest of the field breathes a heavy sigh. He's in the mood again.

  3. Postpublished at 18:07

Rory McIlroy has missed his birdie putt on seven, but has tidied up for par. I wonder how his mood is at the moment. Can he even take solace in the fact that's it's a perfect day? Sunshine, warmth, breeze just rising to test the later starters. No? Thought not.

Patrick Neill: Really want Rory to do it, but I think at the moment Spieth is just too consistent. He's a golfing machine!

  5. Birdie for Garciapublished at 18:03

Just as Spieth is making his way out there, his lead has been cut by the so far steady Sergio Garcia. The Spaniard has birdied the par-five eighth to move to four under par, two behind the leader.

Spieth has played his tee shot on the first. Naturally, it's slap bang in the middle of the fairway. Rory McIlroy, meanwhile, has 20 feet or so for birdie at the seventh to move back to two under.

Patrick Marston: Spieth just doesn't make the frustrating mistakes that McIlroy does - that's why the former will win more Majors.

  8. Spieth set to start his roundpublished at 17:55

Right then, are you ready for this? Our leader and the man who has lived on top of the Augusta scoreboard for a year is on the first tee. Jordan Spieth increased his advantage before he even put his socks on this morning. He starts at six under, a lead of three strokes.

Here's a scene that all amateurs golfers will be familiar with. Bubba Watson, kitted out in a natty light blue number, turns the air a darker shade of his favoured colour on the 11th green.

When his 16-foot putt slides off right, the two-time former champion sets off after the ball, pointing and chuntering like a bloke having a row with the missus.

But then he stops himself from saying something he might regret. He spins on his heel, waves his arms almost apologetically, then kisses her gently on the cheek. Let's move on...

    McIlroy (-1 after 6)

In 16 rounds on the PGA Tour in 2016, Rory McIlroy has carded 11 holes of double bogey or worse.

Any more today or tomorrow and surely his Masters hopes are over?

  12. Postpublished at 17:48

So there are four men on the course on three under and two more - Justin Rose and Paul Casey - yet to go out. They form the pack chasing Jordan Spieth who, at the moment, is the mayor of Augusta.

  14. Bogey for Danny Leepublished at 17:45

I tell you what, that's a helluva save. You don't often see a player fist-pumping when they make bogey, but that's what Danny Lee is doing here. Deadweight, just enough to topple into the hole, Lee waving to the patrons that are miles away, all the way back on the tee. He drops one, but it could have been worse. Three under, three off Spieth.

  15. Postpublished at 17:43

It will be at least one gone for Lee, maybe even two. He's gone past the hole and has a 17-footer for bogey. Very tricky. Jordan Spieth is increasing his lead without even playing a stroke...

  17. Splash!published at 17:40

I shouldn't have said anything about Danny Lee. He's wet at the 12th, that devilishly difficult par three on Amen Corner. His tee shot hit the slope at the front of the green, didn't even make the hazard line, and slipped in for a swim. He's dropping and will soon play his third.

  18. Postpublished at 17:37

The man who looks most likely to make Spieth feel twitchy is Danny Lee. The New Zealander has steadily approached Amen Corner having played par gold since the fifth. He's four under, two off the leader.

I wonder what Jordan Spieth is up to now. A knock on the putting green? Raiding the pro shop's fridge for fizzy pop and chocolate? Our overnight leader is out in about 20 minutes.

The defending champ stills leads by two shots after his first-round 66 and there's bad news for the rest...

"I got a lot out of the round with what I felt like was kind of average-ish ball striking," said the world number two.

If he strikes the ball even better today then we might as well as end this thing after 36 holes.
