  1. That's ugly!published at 21:26 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

    Westwood E (3)

Lee Westwood, in the bunker for his third shot on the par-five fourth. He's already dropped two shots today so the run needs to end and end now.

He swings aggressively and drills one into the face of the bunker. A true disaster. It pops out but he's left with a chip from the rough for his fourth and that leaves 50ft for par.

Turn out the lights, Westwood is done.

  2. Birdie for Garciapublished at 21:24 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

    Garcia -2 (5)

    Sergio! Sergio! Sergio!

Is it going to happen at possibly the one millionth time of asking in a major.

A cracking put gets the job done from 15ft and Garcia clenches his fist and pumps it. Nice work.

Over to Lee Westwood next, the meltdown is gathering pace...

  3. Postpublished at 21:22 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

    Westwood E (3), Lowry -6 (3), Landry -1 (3)

Lee Westwood is sliding like a dodgem on an icy track. Absolutely all over the place as he finds sand on the par-five fourth with his second shot, 60 yards short of the green.

Further back down the fairway Shane Lowry finds the fairway perfectly, Andrew Landry hooks wildly and is in trouble. This is a 611-yard hole so errors are punished time and again.

  4. His beard is not as good as mine - Lowrypublished at 21:20 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

    Lowry -6 (3)

"People have got me mixed up with Andrew Johnston a couple of times but I don't think his beard is as good as mine," said Shane Lowry earlier.

No doubting the difference in class this week despite the burly appearance of both. Johnston won a lot of fans with his approachable demeanor but 13 over is not quite comparable with Shane's fine touch.

    Landry -1 (3), Lowry -6 (3)

Andrew Landry looks like he will make par after striking the pin with his chip on three. That ball was travelling and had the pin not been stood there he may well have been in dire straits.

Shane Lowry responds from his bogey with par on three. His birdie putt is one you'd expect from a man who is not going to over commit just yet.

Now, can Landry halt the slide and convert this par putt? Go on, yep, it's there.

  6. Furyk firingpublished at 21:16 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

    Furyk -1 (11)

Jim Furyk, the 2003 US Open champion is quietly creeping into contention. He's just knocked in his fourth birdie of the round on the 11th to get to one under.

No bogeys for the 46-year-old so far and another birdie chance beckons on the next, the 618-yard par-five 12th.

  7. Birdie for Garciapublished at 21:13 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

    Garcia -1 (4), Piercy -2 (4)

Scott Piercy is under the radar like some stealth destroyer, he's on for another birdie on four... it's in is it? No. A fraction under the required pace and it slips away.

Sergio Garcia has made birdie on the fourth after a solid pitch from the rough and he's back in red numbers.

  8. Lowry is underestimatedpublished at 21:11 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

    Lowry -6 (2)

    Michael Collins
Former PGA Tour caddie on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

"Shane Lowry is underestimated because people do not recognise how important his win at the Bridgestone Invitational was last year. That is a difficult course and it was a tough field of contenders. It says a lot about the man that he won there.

"If Shane has a two-shot lead at the turn he will win. If it's a one-shot lead Dustin Johnson will win."

  9. Could Landry be the lowest ranked Major winner?published at 21:10 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

    Landry -1 (2)

The lowest-ranked golfer to win the US Open is Steve Jones, who was ranked 99th when he won in 1996.

Andrew Landry will not be changing this history I don't think. He has just chipped through the third green, just as he did on the second.

  10. Bogey for Westwoodpublished at 21:09 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

    Johnson -4 (3), Westwood E (3)

Lee Westwood, what are you doing?

For one so experienced surely by now he has learned what is needed in these circumstances? A bad second shot has him on the run and a chip to this green is a bit tentative to leave a 20ft putt for par.

Dustin Johnson has no such problems and has 35ft or so for birdie, nice touch leaves a tap-in four.

Back to Westy, come on Lee, dig in a bit... great putt... no. It lips out. Not to be, in more ways than one perhaps.

  11. They mess with the players' headspublished at 21:04 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

    Jay Townsend
Former American professional golfer on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

"I think the USGA like to mess with the players' heads. They like to test them mentally by setting pin positions that they haven't practised for. The US Open is certainly challenging."

  12. Bogey for Lowrypublished at 21:03 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

    Lowry -6 (2), Landry -1 (2)

Andrew Landry is living out his nightmare here and it's sad to watch so early on. From the bunker at the back of the second green he loops the ball out nicely but this will run and run and run back to the fairway. He's 40ft away again. Now for another chip, that's better. He nearly holes it and will make bogey, that's a result given the state he was in.

Shane Lowry will make bogey too, he rolls his par putt up. The field will like seeing a dropped shot go up on the scoreboard.

  13. The unthinkable winner?published at 20:57 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

    Landry -2 (1)

Andrew Landry would become the highest-ranked player to win a major since rankings began if he gets it done in Pennsylvania.

Before last week he hadn't finished better than 41st in his 11 PGA Tour starts.

It is fair to say he has blossomed.

  14. That's ugly!published at 20:56 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

    Lowry -7 (1), Landry -2 (1)

Andrew Landry and Shane Lowry are not twisting, it's very much stick and take what you've got on two as they refuse having a go at the green from the tee on this 320-yard par four.

Both are in the fairway. Landry plays an ugly approach and with a hop his ball joyfully skips through the green and into the sand.

Over to you Shane... don't go long. "Bad shot there," says Lowry. He suffers a Lee Westwood, finding the green but the ball rolls back down the fairway, 30 yards short.

    Westwood -1 (2)

Looks like Westwood is hoping the green polo white chino combo that his mate Danny Willett donned when he won The Masters will bring him the same luck. Fingers crossed Lee!

  18. Bogey for Westwoodpublished at 20:52 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

    Westwood -1 (2), Johnson -4 (2)

Dustin Johnson, cream pants, blue top, from four feet... birdie.

Lee Westwood can't hole out from 20ft and makes bogey.

  19. Westwood troublespublished at 20:50 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

    Westwood -2 (1), Johnson -3 (1)

Oh Lee Westwood. Must you fill us with hope time and again and then do things like this. His chip on two comes up a little shy and rolls 40ft or more back down the fairway. He's not the first to do it today by any means. He will chip again. A little swing, running this one in low... average. About 20ft left for par.

Now to his playing partner Dustin Johnson from the fringe for eagle... it's on the way... good putt. A tap in birdie surely and the lead will be cut to three you'd think.

  20. A little luckpublished at 20:48 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

    Piercy -2 (2)

Is that a sign. If you believe in star signs, good fortune, or whatever, Scott Piercy has just putted for par and seen the ball do a full lap of the cup before dropping. He clenches a fist and knows he had a little bit of lady luck there. That's birdie-birdie-par.
