"I'd rather try to play a shot to win than play a shot to be second."

Those are the words of Phil Mickelson. So he's going to try and hole this from the fairway. It's on the green but well short. Henrik Stenson is now so close. Just one more good swing...

There are so many people watching this and excited back in Sweden. This means a lot to Swedish golf, that first major is quite huge.

    Johnston -3 (18)

His final round on Sunday may have slipped away a little bit since the turn, but this will be a championship Andrew 'Beef' Johnston will not forget.

The 27-year-old from Barnet strolls up to the 18th green with his arms aloft, cap in one hand, taking in the cheers of the crowd who chant his nickname.

He can't quite end it with a birdie, but it's been a fantastic week for Beef, who finishes eighth at three under par following a two over final round.

Golf has a new cult hero.

To the all important tee shot.

All Henrik Stenson has to do is keep the ball in the fairway. Don't get to crazy, don't let adrenaline turn you into the Incredible Hulk over this. Wow, he's maybe no the hulk but certainly there's some Action Man strength behind this. The ball is heading towards a fairway bunker - a bunker he'd have planned to be well short of.

Will it make it in? No, an inch short. Put his name on the Claret Jug, this is meant to be. That was a touch of fortune. Phil Mickelson is in the fairway. All he can do now is make a score and pray for a mistake from his rival.

  6. There will be no 62published at 18:19 British Summer Time 17 July 2016

    Stenson -19 (17)

Henrik Stenson has six to eight feet for birdie, a birdie which would see him need one more on 18 for a 62. He pulls it and it's not to be.

That 62 is coming for someone soon, I can feel it. Golf has dodged it forever but someone is going to do it.

It's testimony to the two men in this final group that they both went pretty close to it (very close in Mickelson's case) this week. They have been that much better than anyone else. Out on their own and untouchable.

Still, there can be no split winner's prize. It's match point Stenson.

  7. Holmes to take thirdpublished at 18:19 British Summer Time 17 July 2016

    Holmes -6 Stricker -5 (18)

Steve Stricker has the chance to close out with a birdie at the last, but it's short and wide right from 15 or 16 feet. The 49-year-old finishes with a par for a round of 69 that will likely see him finish this Open Championship in fourth.

He's shot three rounds in the 60s this week.

The man to beat him to third? Playing partner JB Holmes. The American also cards a two-under 69 on Sunday and looks set to finish third at Royal Troon.

Phil Mickelson, you hero, you man of stiff character, you brave soul.

He knows he is almost KO'd in this brilliant contest but still digs in for a par, that was a full 15 footer.

    Now to Henrik...

The 17th, Henrik Stenson glares at his ball as he pumps it with an iron at the green on this par three. He's so focused and what a shot. It's six feet left. A birdie here would see him need one more for the first 62 in major history. What a way to end that would be.

Mickelson hooks left and he is almost done for now you have to say. Just like that, confirmation of your dream being over can come so quickly.

    Holmes -6 Stricker -5 (17)

In their mini-battle for third place, JB Holmes leapfrogs Steve Stricker after his compatriot goes wayward with his tee shot at the par-three 17th.

Stricker is on to the green in three and tasked with a 16-foot putt to limit his dropped shots to just one, but the 49-year-old can't convert. Instead he has to tap in for a double bogey.

Holmes makes par and moves into third.

Oh I do not believe that. Phil Mickelson doesn't either as he sends his eagle putt from 20ft to a millimetre on 16. That is so close it's actually painful to watch. It'll be birdie and no more, cruel, so cruel.

Henrik Stenson has whisked his ball from the thick stuff magically and now has five feet for birdie. He can get out of jail a little here and rarely will he have faced more of a knee knocker. He sends it, it's downhill and barely needs a touch. A slight break, it's in and for the second time in 10 minutes, Stenson is fist pumping.

Huge putt. Two clear, two to play.

Please do not go anywhere. We have more drama as Phil Mickelson sees his ball take off like Concord on 16 to reach the green in two and leave a long eagle chance.

Henrik Stenson was watching intently, I guess he wants his job made easier not tougher and the extra pressure shows up in his swing - that's a hook.

He's into the thick grass to the left of the green and will have some serious work to do. He needs the hedge trimmer and lawnmower in there.

"Put the phones away," yells his caddie as Stenson inspects his lie.

Sergio Garcia is back in the clubhouse having shot a two-under 69 on Sunday.

The Spaniard dropped shots at the 10th and 13th but enjoyed his second best round of the week, having posted a 68 on Thursday.

He finishes the championship on four under.
