    A/S Mickelson/Fowler v McIlroy/Sullivan (16)

Andy Sullivan finds the water on 17. Disaster for Europe. We are heading towards an American whitewash.

What a huge moment. Rickie Fowler already hit the green on this par three and this hole my friends is over. In a split second, Europe's position in the early exchanges here has been ripped to pieces.

We need this very badly. It looks like the others have all gone. Unless we get something out of this it is going to be a whitewash.

    3UP Z Johnson/Walker v Kaymer/Garcia (15)

Kaymer has duffed his chip at 15, that was the sort of shot every weekend hacker will be familiar with, and there's no other way of putting this, Europe have fallen apart here. Garcia's chip is pretty ordinary as well, Europe concede without USA having to hit a putt.

  5. 'USA got up early'published at 17:31 British Summer Time 30 September 2016

    Reed/Spieth beat Rose/Stenson 3&2

Henrik Stenson speaking to BBC Radio 5 live: "I thought we played well. Jordan and Patrick made more putts and got up early. Patrick made an important par putt for them on 10.

"It was one of those day. We needed to make one or two putts and we didn't."

  6. USA uppublished at 17:31 British Summer Time 30 September 2016

    A/S Mickelson/Fowler v McIlroy/Sullivan

There's a goalkeeper in the hole. An American one. Tim Howard, Brad Guzan, maybe even Kasey Keller, maybe all three. Somehow Andy Sullivan's putt for a four lips out. That ball looked like it would disappear but then skipped out of the cup. He turns away and smiles in frustration, disbelief perhaps.

Rickie Fowler can now drive home the European disappointment. He builds on Phil Mickelson's fine approach and confidently rolls home. All square, two to play. Cracking match.

  7. 'We couldn't buy a putt'published at 17:28 British Summer Time 30 September 2016

    Reed/Spieth beat Rose/Stenson 3&2

Europe's Justin Rose speaking to BBC Radio 5 live: "It was a tight match and there wasn’t much in it to the green. We couldn’t buy a putt this morning.

"We had a feeling we would run into a run, but it didn’t happen. There were a lot of double breaking putts, on the front nine we hit a few good putts that didn’t go."

    Mickelson/Fowler v McIlroy/Sullivan

I'd say Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth were the most impressive pairing we've seen so far but this match has been the most gripping.

Again there's a twist. After Phil Mickelson found trouble off the tee he pumps a ball from the fairway to within eight feet. An absolute arrow, that's the US close for three strokes.

Rory McIlroy has 88 yards to the pin, Europe's third shot. Solid but too much spin and now Europe look outsiders on this 16th green.

  9. USA 2-0 Europepublished at 17:28 British Summer Time 30 September 2016

    D Johnson/Kuchar beat Westwood/Pieters 5&4

Pieters to keep it alive at 14... bang, in it goes. I wouldn't say he's heaped pressure on the Americans, but at least he's woken them up. Kuchar for the match... and in it goes. That's a rare old thumping for Westwood, and a horrible baptism for rookie Pieters.

  11. 'Patrick Reed the killer'published at 17:24 British Summer Time 30 September 2016

    Reed/Spieth beat Rose/Stenson 3&2

    Andrew Magee
American PGA Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 live

That's what we have been counting on. The fans are going ballistic. This is incredible stuff.

Patrick Reed has been the killer. I don’t think Jordan Spieth has found a fairway on this back nine, he’s made a few pitches and putts, but it’s been about Patrick Reed.

    5UP D Johnson/Kuchar v Westwood/Pieters (13)

Fair to say the crowd is loving this, USA comfortably up in three and Europe clinging onto a lead in the other one. Dustin with a second at 14, from the middle of the fairway, and he's found the middle of the green. The Americans haven't had to do anything special in that bottom match, Westwood and Pieters have just never got going. That's decent from Westwood, but not as close as Johnson.

  13. USA up - 1-0published at 17:22 British Summer Time 30 September 2016

    Reed/Spieth beat Rose/Stenson 3&2

Justin Rose knows this long, snaking putt needs to drop. It's the fourth stroke for this Europe pairing after finding the bunker off the tee.

Rose is close but can't pull a rabbit from the hat and Patrick Reed will be putting to win the match. It's probably 14ft or so on this 16th green, minimal break. Reed is a pumped up young man, he'll be buzzing if this drops... in it goes. American win the first point of the 2016 Ryder Cup. The crowd go ballistic. Reed and Jordan Spieth did a job on two of Europe's big names. Too consistent all day long.

    "FORE LEFT".

You probably don't need me to tell you that Phil Mickelson has the driver in his hand. He's even cleared the 20-deep crowd. That's nearly every tee shot he's hit today that's ended in the crowds. It's like he's aiming for them.

    2UP Z Johnson/Walker v Kaymer/Garcia (14)

    Fred Funk
Former US Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 live

We could have been three down and all of a sudden we are two up. You never know when you are going to get some momentum and you can carry that through to victory. It's happening right now.

    2UP Z Johnson/Walker v Kaymer/Garcia (14)

Walker for birdie at 14... doesn't look like it's going to turn enough but suddenly changes it mind at the last to put the pressure on Sergio... misses, the USA have won three holes on the spin...

  17. 'Not going Europe's way'published at 17:17 British Summer Time 30 September 2016

    5UP D Johnson/Kuchar v Westwood/Pieters (13)

    Carin Koch
Last year's European Solheim Cup captain on BBC Radio 5 live

It's matchplay, that's the way it is. You have a little hope but you have to expect your opponent to make it. You have to make your own putt and it didn't go the way of Europe this time.

  18. Postpublished at 17:17 British Summer Time 30 September 2016

    5UP D Johnson/Kuchar v Westwood/Pieters (13)

Bustin' Dustin Johnson has buried a monster at 13, leaving Westwood with a short one to halve the hole... that's straight left off the club face, the Americans five up with five to play in the bottom match...

  19. McIlroy momentum for Europepublished at 17:15 British Summer Time 30 September 2016

Rory McIlroy hopes his thrilling FedEx Cup triumph helps give Europe momentum as they attempt to win an unprecedented fourth successive Ryder Cup.

The Northern Irishman beat Ryan Moore and Kevin Chappell in a play-off at the Tour Championship to earn £8.8m, as he also won the end-of-season FedEx Cup.

"Hopefully, in some way, it helps the team," said McIlroy, 27. "I've obviously never gone into a Ryder Cup with this much excitement."

You can sense a confidence from him today. There have been one or two times where frustration has gripped him but the swagger is shining through.
