If it carries on like this it will go down as one of the great matchplay days in this competition. It's a wonderful exhibition. Can they keep it up?

    A/S Reed v McIlroy (9)

After the extreme brilliance of the eighth hole, Rory McIlroy and Patrick Reed show they are human on nine with some early blunders. They are both stretching a bit to work this drag for all it's worth. McIlroy splashes out of sand to leave a short par putt but gets it wrong and both men walk off it over par. No damage done in the match.

They have played nine holes and both are four under, not that that matters.

    A/S Moore v Westwood (3)

Lee Westwood's lead lasted just a short while. A good Ryan Moore approach on three leaves a downhill birdie putt and though tentative, it's always in. No celebration, he just hands the putter to his bag man and walks off.

I was saying to Rafa's brother, Miguel, walking up to this hole that he will be confident. It is nice to see him making interaction with the fans today, and that shows how comfortable he is. Even more so than the first two days.

    2UP Mickelson v Garcia (4)

Mickelson for birdie at the fourth... he did actually make it on in one and he's made that disappear, too. Garcia tries to knock his in dead weight down the hill but it comes up a revolution short, Mickelson's hole, his second in a row.

That's a very good effort indeed, captain Rory. Certainly wins today's 'most unique place to follow the Ryder Cup' award, so far. Not sure if it's this picture or the excitement of this Reed/McIlroy match, but I feel slightly seasick...

McIlroy and Reed both -5 after 8 holes

    Tom Fordyce

Wonderful toe-to-toe brawling from McIlroy and Reed, trading blows, taking it in turn to fist-pump, finger-wag and put fingers to lips, the crowds ramping up the bedlam with every dropping putt and gesture. Golf from the heavens and the streets.

Stenson with a five-footer for par at seven and he just about jabs it in. Spieth follows him in, hole halved...

    1UP Holmes v Pieters (6), Moore v Westwood 1UP (2)

JB Holmes misses a tiddler on six to extend his lead in the ding-dong match he's having with Thomas Pieters. I fully expect Holmes to cave in at some point and the steady style of Pieters to win through. It stays at 1UP for the American.

Lee Westwood safely in for par on two, enough to maintain his lead. Nice stuff Westy. A day to banish the demons and draw on all that experience.

    A/S Spieth v Stenson (6)

Spieth's second to the seventh and it's rolled off the side, although I believe it's dry. Stenson has chopped his second across the front. Up at four, Garcia finds the green from the tee, Mickelson having missed.

    A/S Reed v McIlroy (8)

Three-time Ryder Cup player Hunter Mahan: These boys are having the time of their lives!!! It's for the crowd, they totally respect each other. They're making each other better, enjoy it!! We may never see this again!

    A/S Reed v McIlroy (8)

    Andrew Magee
American PGA Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 live

They are giving each other the wag and the bows. I've never seen fans like this, we've got an 80-year-old over here singing "Pat-rick Reed" - and he's got a four-year-old in his lap.

This is the most amazing match I have ever seen in my five Ryder Cups.

  15. What a shot!published at 18:42 British Summer Time 2 October 2016

    A/S Reed v McIlroy (8)

Rory McIlroy has just reduced Minneapolis to rubble. From 50ft or more on the eighth green he has sent a putt rattling into the cup. The energy bounces around this course, the boos are only drowned out by howls of disbelief and Rory, well, he's losing his mind. He looks like a front man for some punk rock group, screaming away like a possessed lunatic.

What has Patrick Reed got from 20ft? Dear me. It's in. This is remarkable. If you know of anyone not tuned into it, wake them up and have a word. As good as it gets.

"I can't hear you," McIlroy shouted to the crowds.

The two players bump fists. I need to sit down. Stunning.

    Walker v Cabrera-Bello 2UP (4)

Rafa Cabrera-Bello is cooking Jimmy Walker like shrimp in a paella. The Spaniard watches on as Walker cannot make par on the par-three fourth. He looks for a right to left break on it but asks too much. Hello. Is this on? Hey America, is this on?  Some Rory McIlroy news next...

    A/S Mickelson v Garcia (3)

Mickelson all over the flag with his third at three, Garcia not quite so hot. Garcia for birdie... good effort, but Mickelson will fancy taking this... Mickelson squeezes it in, levels things up...

    A/S Reed v McIlroy (7)

I should tell you that Thomas Pieters paid the price for going out of bounds on five, JB Holmes didn't make such a hash of things and he leads again by one.

To the eighth, a par three. Patrick Reed shakes out his left arm before taking his grip. His face a little contorted as he concentrates. Solid iron. There's water left here but he's a few feet from the edge of the green. Rory McIlroy shields his eyes from the sun as he gazes at his ball in the air. Heart of the green but that will roll back away from the flag to leave a long way to go.
