  2. What a shot!published at 18:14 British Summer Time 2 October 2016

    1UP Holmes v Pieters (3)

The fourth - a par three - and fifth - a short, driveable par four -  are two key holes early on. They are there to be attacked on a day where you have to go out and grab it.

Thomas Pieters is not hanging around. He doesn't care a jot that the pin is tucked away behind the bunker and just floats one in there to three feet. Birdie chance.

    Fowler v Rose 1UP (2)

Fowler with his third at the par-five third. Great shot, he's got about 10 feet left. Bit of a chat between Rose and caddie about the wind, we think, and they came up with the right answer between them - distance correct, just a little bit pushed.

    1UP Holmes v Pieters (3)

Thomas Pieters has around 15ft left for the win on three, can he eat into the two-hole lead JB Holmes has opened up? Looks a good stroke, is a good stroke. Rattled in at pace. Par three next...

    Mickelson v Garcia 1UP (1)

Mickelson safely on in two at the first, but Garcia has stuck his to within a few feet. But, given Garcia's struggles with the short stick, that putt can't be written off as holed... Mickelson has got a 25-footer uphill for birdie and he's taking his time over it. Decent, but stayed low... Garcia with a couple of feet left and it's right in the middle...

    A/S Reed v McIlroy

Rarely will being close in to the cup for a birdie chance see you beaten in this game but that's what Rory McIlroy gets on five. Patrick Reed's stunner of a drive to the green is rounded off with an eagle putt and these to in-form men are level again. Rory dominated four holes but had just one win to show for it.

    A/S Spieth v Stenson (4)

Stenson very nearly blades in a chip at the fourth but, not for the first time today, it misses by a whisker. That match going blow for blow so far...

    Folwer v Rose 1UP (2)

Impeccable golf shots from Justin Rose, two greats putts - absolutely gorgeous.

    Fowler v Rose 1UP (2)

Here's Rose at the second, nailing a five-footer, Fowler nailing a slightly shorter one, that hole is halved after a couple of tremendous wedges.

    A/S Walker v Cabrera-Bello (1)

Jimmy 'the jitters' Walker. On hole one his iron to the green is a 9.5/10 kind of effort, back spin, control, all the trimmings. His putt from close range though is a right dogs dinner. Lipping out from a few feet and Rafa Cabrera-Bello's par earns a halve.

    Mickelson v Garcia

This could be a hum-dinger of a match, two gnarled Ryder Cup stalwarts in Mickelson and Garcia going mano o mano. It's the Spaniard to hit first and he slaps one straight down the middle. Mickelson's driving has been dangerous all week, and I don't mean in a good way, but this one's OK.

    2UP Holmes v Pieters (2)

    David Leadbetter
Leading golf coach on BBC Radio 5 live

Holmes is two up after two and looking to see if he can stretch that lead. But Thomas is looking good and in a good position to get his third shot close to the pin.

    Reed v McIlroy 1UP (4)

A warning for you. You may want to hide behind your pillow when any player is on the fifth hole today. It's a par four but at just 303 yards today, these players are all going to try to drive it. Rory McIlroy doesn't even need driver, he takes three wood and comes up maybe two feet short of the green. Patrick Reed watches and learns, he puts extra beef on his ball and sets up a very makeable eagle putt. He could be about to level.

    Fowler v Rose 1UP (1)

Doozy of an approach by Fowler at the second, all over the flag and spinning it back to within six feet. Rose almost matches him, but has probably got the easier putt coming back up the hill.

    A/S Spieth v Stenson (3)

Stenson with a monster from the front to win the third and he misses by the thickness of a fag paper. That should be a gimme for birdie, although Spieth could yet match that... Spieth's birdie putt lips out, Stenson squares things up in match two.

    Reed v McIlroy 1UP (4)

    Andrew Magee
American PGA Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 live

Pretty effortless golf from Rory McIlroy - fairways, greens, birdie attempts. The scrapper Reed is having to work a little bit harder, that tends to break you down as the day goes on.

We'll see if Reed can find some of that euphoria he was in yesterday.

    2UP Holmes v Pieters

Patrick Reed and Rory McIlroy halve the fourth, Rory's putt to win was close from range. More worryingly for those with European ties though is what is going on on the second green. JB Holmes - largely useless all week - has woken up in a right mood today and he drains a 12 footer to win another hole against Thomas Pieters.

Pieters outshone McIlroy in fourballs yesterday. Something has gone astray overnight.

    1UP Spieth v Stenson (2)

Stenson with his second into the third and he's almost reached the green, that's a couple of serious humps. Spieth with a peach of a third, he's got about five feet left.

  20. Match five begins...published at 17:53 British Summer Time 2 October 2016

    Walker v Cabrera-Bello

Match number five makes its way to the first tee. Jimmy Walker, a man who has amassed some $21m in career prize money, finds the fairway. Walker is of course now a major champion courtesy of his US PGA Championship win this year. He will provide a gritty rivalry for Rafa Cabrera-Bello, who pushes his tee shot right and into sand.

Cabrera-Bello is one of six rookies. One of six rookies who are set for possibly the toughest examination of their career today.
