Steve Ball: Playing partner shanked a ball into my back, whilst playing Peter Alliss's Old Thorns, somehow managed to come in under par!

samjohnson77: Watching my bro on the 1st tee at his new golf club. Smashed the ball into a rock and back into my face!

  2. Casey home in level parpublished at 20:40 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Casey E

Paul Casey brings his opening round to a close.

His best finish at Augusta was tied fourth last year, and level par today keeps him well in contention.

  3. Pieters happy with Augusta debutpublished at 20:38 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

Belgium's Thomas Pieters ended up carding a level-par 72 on his Masters debut - after leading by four shots at one stage.

But, despite dropping five shots in the final eight holes, the Ryder Cup player was still happy with his opening round at Augusta.

"I hit good shots on the front nine, put myself in good positions and gave myself a lot of chances. I didn't make many long putts," he said.

"On the back nine I didn't feel like I hit a bad shot but if you catch a bad gust of wind it is difficult, like I did on 12.

"The wind picked up towards the end, on the last hole sand was blowing out of the bunker and the balls were moving.

"It is getting a lot tougher out there. I didn't do too bad for my first round here."

  4. Brits abroadpublished at 20:35 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

The British lads are having plenty of fun on their annual trip to Georgia, particularly Matt Fitzpatrick, Justin Rose and Andy Sullivan.

What about the rest? Paul Casey and Ross Fisher are just behind on level par, while defending champion Danny Willett and Chris Wood are one over.

Look a bit further down the leaderboard and you will find Rory McIlroy (+2), Russell Knox (+3), Ian Woosnam (+4) and Sandy Lyle (+5).

English amateur Scott Gregory would love to be in that position. The 22-year-old from Hampshire is propping up the leaderboard after shooting a 10-over par 82.

    Langer +1 (6)

Bernhard Langer doesn't deal in simple pars.

Bogey. Birdie. Double Bogey. Birdie. Bogey. Birdie. At least he's consistent.

That last birdie was an absolute treat from the experienced German too, all of 34 feet. Nice.

If you believe what you read then Lee Westwood could net a £2m bonus from sponsors, external if he wins the Masters. He is of course chasing a first major win and at two over through seven holes, it's not ideal to date. An eight foot par putt slid away to cost him his latest stroke.

He's out there with Sergio Garcia and Shane Lowry, who are both level par.

    Fitzpatrick (-3 after 16)

So Matthew Fitzpatrick holds the lead as he heads up the 16th.

Cool, calm, collected? You bet. The 22-year-old doesn't look fazed at all after successive birdies catapulted him to the top of the leaderboard.

He takes par. A very welcome par at this stage, too.

  9. Double bogey for Pieterspublished at 20:25 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Pieters E

That's a sickener for Thomas Pieters.

He never quite regained that early composure after a tricky trip round Amen Corner, and ends his opening round with a double bogey to drop down the leaderboard on day one.

Back to evens for the Belgian, after such a promising front nine.

    Spieth (+4 after 15)

    SpiethImage source, .

Someone call a mechanic. Jordan Spieth's wheels have come off. The two-time major winner has carded a NINE on the 15th.

We shouldn't laugh but...isn't it great to see one of the world's best golfers doing what we do every week on our local municipal...

He thins his chip back on from behind the green, then lags two putts before eventually tapping in for a quadruple bogey.

The 15th is historically the easiest hole on the course...

  11. New leaderpublished at 20:22 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Fitzpatrick (-3 after 15)

    FitzpatrickImage source, Reuters

Baby faced Matthew Fitzpatrick is showing these hustlers how to really hustle.

While Jordan Spieth was busy making a nine on 15, Fitzy made a birdie four, confidently rolling home a 10 footer before striding to 16 and finding the green from the tee.

I'd love to have Fitzpatrick's swing, bank balance and facial cleansing regime. His skin as clear as an Augusta fairway.

  12. Postpublished at 20:18 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Spieth (E after 14)

Uh oh. Jordan Spieth is digging himself a hole. After plopping his third into the water on the par-5 15th, he overcooks his next effort from the drop-zone - it's over the back of the green.

A touch of  deja vu here. Louis Oosthuizen did exactly the same a bit earlier. He ended up with an eight...

  13. 'Amazing'published at 20:17 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Sullivan -1

    Andy SullivanImage source, Getty Images

England's Andy Sullivan after his one-under-par 71: "To get it around under par is amazing.

"Last year I was nervous and couldn't settle down. This year it felt like normal again. Obviously you will drop shots in this wind. Holes like 11 or 12 are hard enough with a five or 10mph wind but at 30mph, it's so hard to judge."

  14. Postpublished at 20:16 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

Andy Sullivan joins Americans Russell Henley and Kevin Chappell back in the clubhouse on one under.

  15. Postpublished at 20:13 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Spieth (E after 14)

This is the overnight lead which nobody wants to take.

Jordan Spieth is still in the mixer, despite dropping a shot on 14 after a birdie on the previous hole.

Or should that be WAS in the mixer. The American gets his ball wet with his approach on 15, landing on the front ridge and seeing it gobbled up by the water hazard lying in wait in front of the green...

  16. McGirt joins four-way leadpublished at 20:11 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Fowler (-1 after 16) McGirt (-2 after 13)

Rickie Fowler gives himself a chance to disrupt that European top three at the 16th.

His birdie putt drifts left and then creeps back right towards the hole. Has it got the legs? Not this time.

Fear not, our American friends. One William McGirt is on the case of chasing the lead. He's just birdied the 13th from 16 yards to go two under. Lovely stuff.

  17. Save Rorspublished at 20:10 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    McIlroy (+2 after 4)

Rory McIlroy over a nasty 15 footer for par on the fourth, he could be three over after four holes here. Starts it a fraction left, watches it intently, drops. A glimmer of relief on his face.

  18. Leaderboardpublished at 20:06 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    And here's that leaderboard...

-2 Thomas Pieters (after 17 holes), Matt Fitzpatrick (14), Justin Rose (13)

-1 (selected) Rickie Fowler (15), Shane Lowry (5)

Selected others: E Jordan Spieth (14), +2 Rory McIlroy (4)

  19. Postpublished at 20:05 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

So it's an all-European top three at the minute. Thomas Pieters, Justin Rose and Matt Fitzpatrick all leading the way on two under.

American bragging rights aren't far away, mind.

They lost their number one in Dustin Johnson, but five of his countrymen wait in the wings as Bill Haas joins the one-under party.

  20. The pain gamepublished at 20:04 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Kaymer (+6 after 14)

Double bogey, bogey, bogey, bogey, bogey.

That's the last five holes Martin Kaymer has played, a run which takes him from level par to six over by the time he hits the 15th.

    Enough to make you weep.
