    Mickelson (-2)

    "Oh gosh. Darn it."

Phil Mickelson strikes me as the sort of bloke who does not have swear words in his vocabulary. Even if he dropped a heavy hammer on his foot. Or if he pushes his tee shot on three left into the bunkers.

    Not ideal.

  2. Ernie blowing up early...published at 19:40 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

    Els (+9 after 6)

Peering from the sand is Ernie Els. Who doesn't love Ernie?

Sadly, today is... let's just say one of those days for the 'Big Easy'.

He started on three over but is nine over after just six holes.

  3. Player shows the waypublished at 19:39 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

With three Masters victories (in a career featuring nine major wins), Gary Player knows his way around Augusta.

Here he is entertaining Paul Azinger and Hazel Irvine in the BBC studio prior to going on air.

Uninterrupted coverage of the tournament is on BBC Two now through until midnight.

  4. Birdie for Mickelsonpublished at 19:39 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

    Spieth (E), Mickelson (-2)

Spieth hustles his ball up the hill. Decent length, slightly awry line. Over to Mickelson...

Big Phil has already eagled the second this week. This time, his ball veers left and misses the can. He knocks in for a birdie-birdie start.

  5. Postpublished at 19:36 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

    Spieth (E), Mickelson (-1)

Whatever Jordan Spieth says, his ball does. Puppet-master and puppet are the words that spring to mind.

An expletive is uttered by the Texan as he launches his third shot on the par-five second towards the green, then he urges his ball to sit. That it does, hitting the bank at the back, rolling back to about 20 foot short.

Phil Mick is inside that. After two shots.

  6. Birdie again!published at 19:36 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

    McIlroy (-1 after 3) Kuchar (+2 after 3)

    McilroyImage source, .

Rory McIlroy absolutely munched his drive up three. Frankly that's disgusting!

He chips from about 40ft off the green to within a yard and can roll that in with his eyes closed. Par-birdie-birdie start.

Matt Kuchar makes a dog's dinner of this fairly timid hole, bogey.

  7. On the tee shortlypublished at 19:32 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

    Saturday's remaining pairs

Only eight players are left in the locker room. That means we have four pairs still to come...

19:30  Jon Rahm (Spa), Fred Couples

    19:40  William McGirt, Ryan Moore

19:50  Thomas Pieters (Bel), Rickie Fowler

20:00  Charley Hoffman, Sergio Garcia (Spa)

  8. On the first...published at 19:30 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

    Scott (level) Rose (-1)

    Adam ScottImage source, .

Adam Scott took it down a dial on the first hole, just 281 yards.

Since his 2013 Masters win he's won just four tournaments. Very much in the mix here though.

Playing alongside Justin Rose, both set up birdie chances on one. Mid-range putts to come...

What's that noise? It is the sound of our 'BBC coverage is about to start' hooter.

You've got just about enough time to stick on the kettle.

  11. Six of the bestpublished at 19:26 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

    Mickelson (-1)

Let's put that Mickelson birdie into context. The first was the hardest hole on the opening two days with only three men making birdies there. Today it is slightly easier, although Phil Mick is still only the sixth player to defeat it.

  12. One of five?published at 19:25 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

Charley Hoffman, Sergio Garcia, Rickie Fowler, Thomas Pieters and William McGirt will be pleased to read this stat...

  13. Birdiepublished at 19:25 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

McIlroy (level after 2) Kuchar (+1 after 2)

Rory McIlroy does what Rory McIlroy should do, making the par five pay out birdie. His long hybrid into the dancefloor sees him putt to within a foot and tap home. Routine. He'd take four of them on the four par-fives today. Matt Kuchar cannot follow him in. He had to caress a putt from 10ft but the break beat him.

  14. Par for Spiethpublished at 19:24 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

    Spieth (E)

Follow that young Jordan. He can't. Spieth's birdie putt on the first, slides down the left, leaving him to urge it ease up.

He;'s giving it the 'calm down, calm down' gesture made famous by the Scousers on the Harry Enfield show. Again his ball listens - an easy tap-in for par.

  15. Birdiepublished at 19:22 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

    Chappell (level after 8)

Is Kevin Chappell the player who will steam from the pack. On the eighth hole - named 'Yellow Jasmine' - he blooms beautifully from the first cut to the fairway before wedging in and dropping a putt. Four blows on a par five, that my friends is birdie.

  16. Birdie for Mickelsonpublished at 19:22 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

    Mickelson (-1)

Mickelson, by the way, is wearing a pair of white sneaker shoes that wouldn't look out of place on the crown-green bowling deck down at your local park. He is 46 after all.

But who cares about his dress sense when he can still play golf like this? The three-time Masters champ rolls his birdie putt up the hill straight down the throat of the hole.

Lefty is moving on Moving Day.

  17. Sit down ball!published at 19:19 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

    McIlroy (+1 after 1)

Rory Mcilroy needs to make the par-five holes stick from here in. From the fairway, he has 280 yards to reach the green and as soon as he hits it he's shouting "sit, sit, sit".

If only we were all good enough to talk 280-yard strikes down in desperation!

He's on the green, with a long one left for eagle.

  18. Postpublished at 19:18 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

    Spieth, Mickelson (E)

"Go ball. Go ball!" Spieth burns the back of his ball with a fierce stare. It does the trick. The ball listens, it goes, landing pin high about eight foot to the right of the first hole.

What have you got Phil? Something equally as productive. Lefty knocks his approach about 12 foot short, a nice uphill putt gives him a great chance of starting with a birdie.
