Position A. Jordan Spieth plucks out the three wood, knocking it down the middle. A quick twirl of the club in his finishing position, a quick pick-up of the tee, tells us he likes it. He likes it a lot.

Lefty up next, the big dog in hand. A big swoosh of the stick sends his ball slightly left. Not much danger there.

    A couple of nerve-settlers.

If you managed to sneak a glimpse of Jason Day on our Red Button coverage and wondered who the unfamiliar face playing with him is, then we're going to tell you.

That fella is Jeff Knox. Jeff who? He is Augusta's designated marker. And he is playing with world number three Day to keep him some company.

When an odd number of players make the weekend, Jeff goes out in the first group with the lowest-placed starter. Lucky, lucky man.

Here are a few Jeff-based facts:

    • He's the Augusta course-record holder (from the member's tees) with a round of 61
    • He's played on Masters weekend for each of the past seven years
    • He beat Rory McIlroy in 2014 by a shot

No wonder Day turned it on a bit...

    Day (+3 after 18)

Jason Day is the first man home today and signs for a three-under-par 69, pulling him back to three over. He will not be wearing the Green Jacket for the first time but things are improving for him nicely.

    McIlroy (+1 after 1) Kuchar (+1 after 1)

Rory McIlroy has an outside birdie chance on this opening drag. He's around 20-25ft from the cup and this will swing a bit. Playing partner Matt Kuchar is in for par. Rory sends this on its way, a right-to-left breaker, beautiful line, looks good... two inches short.

This pairing is tastier than a hot apple pie. With ice cream, naturally.

Four Green Jackets between them, endless amounts of talent, both at the opposite ends of the career spectrum. And, for the Augusta crowd, both representing the Stars and Stripes.

Quiet please. On the tee....Jordan Spieth....

Sergio. I have him in the sweepstake. I'm a fan. He's deserving of a title.

Thomas Pieters. I didn't have to think about it at all. He's playing well and fought back on Friday. I just see him going on and wouldn't be surprised to see him win, going against the belief you cannot win here on debut.

    Rickie Fowler.

Unequivocal from our man on the ground.

I'm told Rory pinged that 346 yards off the tee. That type of power belongs under a heavy bar...

  11. On the tee...published at 19:03 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

    McIlroy (+1) Kuchar (+1)

To the first tee where a certain Rory McIlroy is teeing it up. White top, I'd say red trousers. He looks tiny alongside Matt Kuchar who frankly looks ready for the NBA.

With a snap, McIlroy makes good contact and is in the fairway...

  13. Eagle - what a shot!published at 19:00 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

    Chappell (+1 after 7)

Kevin Chappell stands in the middle of the seventh fairway and draws a wedge out like a sword. He thinks he's on Game of Thrones the way he's wielding that thing and then bang, he's worthy of the role. No nonsense, straight in and that's two shots picked up..

  14. Andy who?published at 19:00 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

    Sullivan (+9)

    Alistair Bruce-Ball
Radio 5 live commentator at Augusta

Andy Sullivan's day not made any better here by the Masters scoreboard getting his name wrong as he came down the par-3 6th. After 3 consecutive bogeys at the 3rd, 4th and 5th he looked up to see that he'd become Daniel Summerhays instead of Andy Sullivan. The wrong "Su-".....

You can listen to Alistair and the rest of the BBC Radio 5 live team from 21:00 BST

Just when you think you've cracked Augusta it comes back to bite you on the backside.

England's Andy Sullivan was chugging along nicely after an opening-day 71. Since then he has carded 10 bogeys to slip down the leaderboard quicker than Dustin Johnson does down stairs.

Not one single birdie either. Wounding.

    Walker (+1 after 2)

Jimmy Walker just smashed one 307 yards off the third tee.

He's got some sort of alien fuel running through his veins after going birdie-birdie on the first two drags.

I'm getting excited. Augusta National is going to give it up today. I'm going to go bold - someone will shoot a 63!

Rory is of course five off the pace but if this course starts giving scores up, he may well take it apart like a kid does a Lego set.
