    Westwood (-1 after 7) McIlroy (-1 after 8)

Rory McIlroy moves back into red numbers on eight, the par five doesn't have much resistance when your'e smashing it 326 yards off the tee. Even a loose second allows him to get up and down for birdie. He needs a heck of a run of tweet tweets now though.

Lee Westwood is trying to fashion something big and he almost holes out from 141 yards on seven. He could blow that ball in for birdie now... and does (well, he tapped it in).

  3. Bogey for Fowlerpublished at 20:35 British Summer Time 9 April 2017

    Fowler (-5) Spieth (-3)

Jordan Spieth's bogey-birdie-bogey start almost continues on the fourth. It has no right to, however, not with him lining up a 40-foot putt. The Texan thinks he has got it, his ball turning the corner before stopping short. A hand over mouth moment for Spieth.

Fowler has a task saving par, a 12-footer up the hill. But these are the sort of putts he has been making for fun this week. He attacks it, misses the hole, ball grinding to a half for a tap-in.

If I was in Sergio Garcia's position I would be feeling pretty good right now. If you have got that feel in your hands in the early holes, you are unlikely to lose it.

Although the last round of a major can do crazy things.

    Garcia (-8)

You just know Sergio's mind is going a mile-a-minute. He has a calm, placid air but he is boiling inside.

    Garcia (-8 after 3)

That was a beautiful putt from Sergio. He chose a nice high line and just fed it in.

In terms of stats to look at, I was always a big one for the total footage of final putts. If you add together the distance of where you hole out from and it adds up to a total of more 100 feet, you have had a good round.

  8. Birdie!published at 20:30 British Summer Time 9 April 2017

    Garcia (-8 after 3) Rose (-6 after 3)

A big moment on the third green as Sergio Garcia stands over a short birdie putt. Huge break on it, left to right, it snakes, it's in. Superb judgement.

It's big because Justin Rose chipped his second through the green and is now trying to save par... he flicks a pitch close and rolls home to make the four. Two shot gap now.

    Casey (-2), Fowler (-6)

Paul Casey needs something special to nab another birdie on seven. And he almost produces it. A wonderful chip dusts the left-to-right slope of the green - circling round to almost hole out.

Meanwhile...back on four...Rickie Fowler is eating sand. More club is needed as he goes with a five iron on the 240-yard par three. Me and thee would need the driver. Well, definitely me.

  11. Kaymer's run endspublished at 20:24 British Summer Time 9 April 2017

    Kaymer (level), (Kuchar -1)

Kaymer's run of birdies comes to an end at the par-four 14th. A bogey takes him back to level.

Meanwhile, a couple of back-to-back birdies for Matt Kuchar at six and seven have taken him to one under.

  13. Birdie for Fowler, bogey for Spiethpublished at 20:23 British Summer Time 9 April 2017

    Fowler (-6), Spieth (-3)

    One up, one down.

Contrasting fortunes for the American pair on the third green. Spieth slides his par putt past, oooh, this ain't finished either.

Fowler's turn first, however, confidently draining a downhiller. Rickie moves level with Justin Rose on six under, one adrift of leader Sergio Garcia.

Spieth walks off with just one dropped, just.

  14. What's in a number?published at 20:21 British Summer Time 9 April 2017

    Garcia (-7 after 2)

Sergio Garcia lashes 326 yards up the third, a short par four. Justin Rose follows, though not as far.

Garcia has caddie number 89 this week, the same number that Danny Willett had last year.

Up ahead on the green... some drama...

  15. Postpublished at 20:19 British Summer Time 9 April 2017

    Spieth (-4), Fowler (-5)

Bogey, birdie...bogey? Jordan Spieth trundles over the back of the third green, leaving a difficult chip back on. He's lagged it. Ten feet to save par.

Fowler, well inside him, waits patiently...

Both Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia missed great opportunities there. Rose hit through the break a little bit. His putt was on the right line but the pace was too strong.

  17. Rose to wilt?published at 20:18 British Summer Time 9 April 2017

    Rose (-6 after 2)

The answer to the question above? Not likely on the evidence below....

A big miss from close in by Sergio, Justin Rose to tie the lead from a few feet... oh dear... pushed it.

You've got to want it lads!

  19. Postpublished at 20:17 British Summer Time 9 April 2017

    Spieth (-4), Fowler (-5)

"Awww Jordan!" Spieth scolds himself after his drive on three also heads towards the sand. Is ball is acting like a kid arriving at the seaside. Sees sand, runs straight towards it.

Spieth might not realise this - but he is damn lucky. The American's ball kicks up and lands on grass in the middle of a cluster of bunkers.

Fowler? Down the middle with his drive, then about five feet from the pin with his approach. Beautiful.
