Sergio Garcia, you hard, hard man.

He sends his wedge high into the blue sky and it drops over the pin to within four feet. The heart of a champion, the shot of one too...

This is unbearable. That noise you heard in your front garden was the roar from Augusta.

Would you take a win if it came from a slice of luck? Justin Rose has just had a huge one.

His ball pitches right of the green but gets a massive kick left and it rolls to within eight feet. Gorgeous for him, pain for Sergio Garcia....

Justin Rose has 156 yards in, Sergio 134. Same angle. Rose up first...

And so they walk. This is where a caddie earns his crust hey. Definitely not the time to say the wrong thing or let slip you've had a cheeky fiver on the other guy.

What must be going through the heads? One good swing, just one good swing. Their stomachs must be doing flips.

Get the yardage book out gents and double check your maths...

Both players have responded magnificently on one of the most challenging tee shots on the course. The ovation for Sergio Garcia and Justin Rose as they come up the last is really something.

    Garcia (-9 after 17) Rose (-9 after 17)

Justin Rose will have to follow, talk about pressure. Almost four years have passed since his major win and he was in the clubhouse watching by this point on that night.

This is different, he has to take it. Boom... up the middle.

    Garcia (-9 after 17) Rose (-9 after 17)

Sergio Garcia to tee it up first. He's gone par-par-par on this hole in his first three rounds.

It's 21 years as a pro by my reckoning, no major wins. Make a three here and it can all land at your feet. All the relief, all the praise, all the glory.

Bang... up the middle. "That's a ripper," says Peter Allis on BBC Two.

    Garcia (-9 after 17) Rose (-9 after 17)

Justin Rose, his shadow huge in the evening Georgia sun, sends his ball and it hangs there. Bogey.

Sergio Garcia from two feet to make par and draw level... in she goes.

We have a ONE HOLE SHOOTOUT!

    Fowler (-1), Spieth (-1), Moore (-2)

The American challenge, which looked so healthy at the start of the day, has faded badly over the course of this round. Rickie Fowler, who was fancied by many to claim a first major here, bogeyed 16, 17 and 18 to fall back to one under and tied for 11th.

Jordan Spieth has registered his worst display at a Masters. To be fair, though, second, first and second was a pretty tough bar to meet. He does at least finish under par with a birdie at the last.

A 74 from Ryan Moore leaves him two under and tied for ninth.

    Garcia (-9 after 16) Rose (-10 after 16)

Justin Rose, from the sand below the level of the green. A swift scoop, sand scatters out of the trap and his ball rolls to within 10ft.

Sergio Garcia, putting from range, not the legs needed. He will likely tap in for par so JR needs to make this to maintain his lead...

  14. "11 under par wins it"published at 23:47 British Summer Time 9 April 2017

A reminder of what BBC Radio 5 live summariser Jay Townsend said before the start of play - you can check back to the entry at 6.30pm if you don't believe us (although ignore the bit about Jordan!):

"Justin Rose will probably have a number in mind. We know Jordan Spieth will have a number in mind. I don't know what he will be thinking - but I think 10 under is a play-off anything better than that is an outright win. I am feeling a play-off."

    Garcia (-9 after 16) Rose (-10 after 16)

Justin Rose gets to move the ball in the first cut as he's on a sprinkler head. He asks a camera man to move around a little as he's frankly getting on his nerves.

He sets, gets comfortable in his stance and drives the ball through the grass and into the back of the ball. Good line, short in the bunker though.

To Sergio, no such big build up, he glares at the ball in flight, his shoulders sloped as he wills it home. On the green, uphill putt from range left.

    Pieters (-5 after 18)

Belgium's Thomas Pieters is reasonably content with his first outing at Augusta.

He told BBC Sport: "It's very nice to hopefully finish top five. I'm a bit disappointed with the way I finished because I could've put more pressure on the leaders."

On what he will take away after his debut performance, he said: "The course plays a lot different on a Sunday than a Thursday.

"I had some lightning quick putts and I'll know for next time not to put the ball in those places."

  19. Sergio in charge on 17published at 23:40 British Summer Time 9 April 2017

    Rose (-10 after 16) Garcia (-9 after 16)

The 17th hole. This week the seventh toughest on the course. It has averaged 4.19 shots as a par four.

Justin Rose fires and it's heading right, he's flicking his driver furiously to will it back left but it doesn't want to know. He will be in the first cut, not a disaster for now.

Sergio Garcia lands on the nice carpet. He's knocked that 298 yards, around 150 left.
